Three injured, one freed in serious crash near Blenheim
Photo: RNZ / Nate McKinnon A person has been cut from their vehicle in a serious crash that injured three people and closed State Highway 1 in Riverlands, south of Blenheim. New Zealand Transport Agency / Waka Kotahi said the highway between Riverlands and Redwood Pass remained closed at the Redwood Pass Road intersection following a crash in the early hours of Sunday morning. It said no detours were available and advised motorists to avoid the area. Emergency services, including a helicopter, were called to the accident at 12.15am. Fire and Emergency shift manager Blair Walklin said three crews attended and used hydraulic cutting equipment - the 'jaws of life' - to free one person who was trapped. A spokesperson for Hato Hone St John said two people with moderate injuries were taken to Wairau Hospital. A third seriously injured patient flown to Nelson Hospital. Crash into house in Kumeū leaves four people in critical condition

Police have confirmed a serious crash in the town involving a car crashing into a house on Coatesville-Riverhead Highway. A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said they had four critical patients still at the scene of the crash. He said St John had sent four ambulances, four rapid response units, two operations managers and a major incident support vehicle. The spokesperson said it was likely the critically injured would be transferred to Auckland City Hospital. The road is currently closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.
