New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with the Foreign Minister of Oman, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi and shared the details of the conversation in a post on X on Sunday.
In a post on X, the EAM said that the two leaders discussed the regional developments taking place.
The EAM wrote on X, "Appreciate the telecon with FM @badralbusaidi of Oman today. Discussed recent regional developments."
Previously, Al Jazeera reported that the United States and Iran had concluded "indirect" negotiations in Muscat, Oman, and agreed to hold further talks next week. The discussions, mediated by Oman, aimed to address key issues between the two countries.
The talks were described as being conducted in a "constructive atmosphere and based on mutual respect."
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff led their respective delegations, with Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi acting as chief mediator, as per Al Jazeera.
The conversation between EAM Jaishankar and the Foreign Minister of Oman come after the two had held a bilateral meeting in February earlier this year.
During the meeting, both leaders had reviewed the full spectrum of India-Oman relations.
The EAM conveyed his appreciation to the leadership of the Sultanate of Oman for hosting the Indian Ocean Conference and for their steadfast support in strengthening India-Oman ties. Discussions also focused on avenues for further enhancing collaboration in areas of mutual interest, the MEA noted in its statement.
According to the Ministry, EAM Jaishankar also unveiled the specially designed logo celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations between India and Oman, along with Sayyid Badr Albusaidi.
As both countries prepare to commemorate this in 2025, the logo symbolises the long-standing partnership built on history, culture, and strong people-to-people ties.
Notably, EAM Jaishankar also launched the book, Mandvi to Muscat: Indian Community and the Shared History of India and Oman, along with the Foreign Minister of Oman. Brought out by the Embassy of India in Muscat, the book highlights the rich history of the Indian diaspora in Oman and the centuries-old people-to-people ties that continue to shape bilateral relations.

Iran's top security chief heads to Iraq, Lebanon

TEHRAN: Iran's top security chief, Ali Larijani, was in Iraq on Monday ahead of a visit to Lebanon. Iranian state television said Larijani, the head of the National Security Council, had departed on the three-day trip, his first since being appointed. Larijani signed a bilateral security agreement in Iraq before heading to Lebanon, where he will meet senior Lebanese officials and figures, state TV said. There were no immediate details on the security deal. In Iraq, Larijani met with National Security Adviser Qassem al Araji and discussed "the implementation of the security agreement" as well as the situation in the Gaza Strip, according to a statement from Araji's office. A top Iraqi government official said that the aim of the visit was to discuss the agreement and inform Iraq "about Iran's position on the latest developments regarding the conflict with the United States and Israel". Iranian state television later said Larijani and Araji signed a "joint security memorandum of understanding". — AFP

Olive sector grows to 20,000 trees, 83 tonnes in annual yield

MUSCAT: Across the mountains, particularly in Al Jabal Al Akhdhar and the Western Hajar range, olive trees thrive in a revitalised agricultural landscape that reflects the nation's ambitious vision for food security and diversified income. The journey began in the 1990s with the introduction of 10,000 saplings from various cultivars. Some varieties quickly adapted to local conditions, laying the groundwork for olive farming as a promising sector. Today, success is not only in cultivation but also in production. In 2022, Oman produced over 83 tonnes of olives and 10,000 litres of olive oil. Yet, demand far outstrips supply, with more than 24,000 tonnes of olives imported between 2020 and 2022 — underscoring the need to boost local output. Prof Rashid bin Abdullah al Yahyai Government bodies and institutions have supported farmers through free sapling distribution, training programmes and modern olive mills, increasing the number of trees to 20,000. Omani olive oil is now gaining regional and international recognition for its high quality and distinctive flavour. Sustainable growth, however, demands overcoming challenges — a mission championed by Prof Rashid bin Abdullah al Yahyai of the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences. His project identifies optimal cultivation areas based on climate and water resources, introduces high-yielding varieties, and promotes best practices in pruning, irrigation and fertilisation. Innovation is also driving the sector forward. By-products such as olive leaves and pomace, often discarded, are being explored for transformation into value-added nutritional and functional products. Research aims to enhance processing efficiency and create sustainable economic solutions for operational hurdles. These efforts form a clear road map — not just towards self-sufficiency, but towards positioning Oman as a significant player in the regional olive market. In doing so, Oman enhances food security and bolsters its economy by fostering an innovative and sustainable agricultural sector.
