Cowboys sacrifice player to sign George Pickens after huge trade

Daily Mail07-05-2025

The Cowboys have released wide receiver Seth Williams to make room for newly acquired wideout George Pickens, who they brought to Dallas earlier on Wednesday.
Pickens was traded to Dallas from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday morning alongside a sixth-round pick in next year's draft. In return, the Steelers received a third-round selection and a fifth-round pick in 2027.
Williams had never played a game for the Cowboys, spending 2024 on the team's practice squad.
Williams has not played in an NFL game since 2021, and only has one career interception, when he was a member of the Denver Broncos.
The former Auburn standout spent 2022 and 2023 on the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad.
Safe to say Jerry Jones upgraded his roster by losing Williams and adding Pickens.
The Cowboys bring in the wideout hoping to contend in an NFC East that is getting better around them.
The Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders were the two NFC teams to compete in the conference championship game last year, while the Giants have spent over $130million on its defense and retooled its quarterback room.
Pickens was the big fish in a seemingly smaller pond with Pittsburgh still not having a clear starter at quarterback this season.
The Steelers have Mason Rudolph and Will Howard on their roster, with Aaron Rodgers still existing in free agency.
Now, Pickens will have Prescott as a quarterback, who will be one of the better signal callers he has ever worked with.
The Cowboys are coming off a 7-10 season, missing the mark on a season that was thought to be their route back to playoff glory.
Now with new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, Dallas will again try to compete for a playoff spot, with much less room for comfort.

Former Liverpool and Arsenal star to join Man City coaching staff for Club World Cup as he earns promotion to Pep Guardiola's senior side

Two-time Premier League winner Kolo Toure is joining Manchester City 's backroom staff for the Club World Cup. Toure, a coach with the club's Under-18 team under Oliver Reiss, is jetting off to the United States with Pep Guardiola 's squad on Thursday. City saw three of Guardiola's coaching team – Juanma Lillo, Carlos Vicens and Inigo Dominguez – depart the club at the end of the season and have moved quickly to find replacements. Pep Lijnders, Jurgen Klopp 's former No 2 at Liverpool, is in as Guardiola's assistant. Set-piece coach James French ended a 13-year stay at Liverpool to join as well. Toure sealed an Under 18s role last year and is popular among players. The 44-year-old won the league title with City in 2012, while it's not yet known if his promotion will become permanent. The appointments before the Club World Cup, and an alteration in how many players are going on the trip, means the backroom set-up will take on a different feel to what had been expected. The Under-21 boss Ben Wilkinson and his assistant Craig Mudd, both highly regarded in the academy, were believed to be helping the first team in separate fortnight stints across the tournament. But City have opted to largely take established stars, and a smaller squad with fewer youngsters than first envisaged, to America - meaning the two coaches will be left to organise their side's pre-season instead. City are expected to announce the squad, made up of around 25 players, on Wednesday. FIFA regulations allow teams to take more than 30.

Reports: Commanders WR Terry McLaurin skips minicamp

June 10 - Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin did not report to the start of the team's mandatory minicamp on Tuesday as he seeks a contract extension, multiple media outlets reported. McLaurin, whose contract expires after the 2025 season, was absent from Commanders' voluntary organized team activities but did attend the first month of workouts. Players who bypass mandatory minicamp practices are subject to daily fines with a maximum three-day penalty of around $104,000, per the NFL's collective bargaining agreement. McLaurin skipped voluntary OTA practices as well as the mandatory minicamp in 2022 prior to signing a three-year contract extension. He has a base salary of $15.5 million for the upcoming season. McLaurin, who turns 30 in September, recorded a career-best 13 touchdown receptions to go along with 82 catches for 1,096 yards in 2024. The two-time Pro Bowl selection has not missed a game since 2020. He has 460 career receptions for 6,379 yards with 38 touchdowns since being selected by Washington in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. --Field Level Media

Rahm ready to embrace Oakmont challenge at U.S. Open

OAKMONT, Pennsylvania, June 10 (Reuters) - Jon Rahm knows Oakmont Country Club will provide a challenge unlike any other at this week's U.S. Open but the Spaniard said on Tuesday the aura of one of the most feared layouts in the world will not impact his game. Oakmont is considered a quintessential U.S. Open venue given its punishing rough, narrow fairways, lightning-fast greens and slew of bunkers that most expect will combine to keep the winning score above par. But Rahm, speaking ahead of Thursday's opening round, plans to embrace the gruelling test that awaits the world's top golfers at the par-70 venue that will be set up at 7,372 yards. "To be honest, once you start the tournament, all of those things kind of go away. It's business at that point. It's time to post a score," Rahm, who has posted a top-10 finish in all 20 LIV Golf regular season events he has completed in, told reporters. "You're not really thinking, oh, this is Oakmont. It's more like, okay, here's the 1st hole, hopefully make a four, then move onto the next. That's kind of how it goes." The U.S. Open is widely considered the toughest test in golf and one that Rahm has enjoyed success at as he won in 2021 edition at Torrey Pines to pick up his first major title. Rahm was once quite vocal when things did not go his way but the 30-year-old Spaniard said his ability to accept mistakes and bad breaks on the course has improved. "It's just a tough course. It's so difficult where very few times anybody has won under par. If it doesn't rain, most likely over par will win again," said Rahm. "It's something that none of us are used to, but it's a challenge you need to embrace. "If there's any part of your game that will be tested on a week like this, it will be your mental game, that's for sure." Rahm, who held a share of the back-nine final-round lead with Scottie Scheffler at last month's PGA Championship before a late collapse, will play the opening two rounds with Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth.
