Luke McCowan: Celtic will be ready for crucial Champions League qualifier
Celtic will be heading to Kazakhstan or Slovakia in their bid to reach the league stage after being paired with either Kairat Almaty or Slovan Bratislava.
The first leg, which is due to take place at Celtic Park, will come four games into the season with Brendan Rodgers' side facing Aberdeen next weekend and then Falkirk in the Premier Sports Cup.
Winning the play-off will be worth tens of millions of pounds for the club and ensure Celtic have a chance to build on last season's impressive European campaign rather than taking a step back into the Europa League.
But McCowan, who netted a late winner against St Mirren on Sunday, is sure they will embrace the challenge.
'These players play under massive pressure all the time,' the 27-year-old said. 'It's what playing at this club takes.
'You need to be ready for that pressure, you need to have your chest out, your head high and go and show that you're a Celtic player.
'That's what it demands and that's what the manager wants. Pressure in a game hopefully brings out your best qualities.
'I'm sure we will be (ready). I mean if you were to ask us if we played it this midweek, I'm sure we'd all be ready.
'When those games come around, it's about embracing it and knowing what the challenge is going to be.'
Celtic reached the knockout phase for the first time in 12 years last season before bowing out to a last-gasp goal against Bayern Munich in Germany.
When asked if he felt they belong in the league stage, McCowan said: 'I think we showed that last year, but it's about proving it again. There's always a demand for more at this club.'
The former Dundee midfielder proved the hero on Sunday as Celtic opened their William Hill Premiership title defence with a 1-0 win over St Mirren.
The champions hit the frame of the goal three times and had a Callum McGregor strike disallowed for handball as the Buddies looked set to frustrate the title favourites.
But substitute McCowan found the bottom corner of the net with a deflected strike in the 87th minute to send Celtic two points ahead of Rangers after the opening weekend of the season.
'It's what you're here to do,' he said. 'You're here to score goals and help the team win games.
'You want to create energy, you want to create positivity when you're coming off the bench and I think, at the point we made the changes, they probably needed some fresh legs. That's what the squad's there for.
'We had enough chances to go and win probably two football matches, really unlucky with a few hitting the post, obviously a goal chopped off as well.
'On another day, you probably come away scoring two or three, maybe more.'

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak was told to report for training on Wednesday after the rest of the squad had left as uncertainty over his future continues. The 25-year-old Sweden international did not travel with his team-mates on their pre-season trip to Singapore and South Korea, ostensibly because of a minor thigh injury, after Liverpool, who subsequently tabled a £110million bid for him, let it be known they remained interested in acquiring his services. Isak, who later informed the club he wanted to explore his options this summer, instead flew to Spain to train at former club Real Sociedad and returned to Tyneside at the weekend, shortly before head coach Eddie Howe and his squad landed back from Seoul and were given two days off. The players were back at the training ground on Wednesday morning and their families were invited to join them after training. However, the PA news agency understands Isak, who reported back to the club's Benton base on Monday, was told not to come in until after they had left and was pictured arriving at around 1550. The £63million frontman has been a huge hit since his arrival from Sociedad during the summer of 2022 and played a key role last season as they ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy with the Carabao Cup and qualified for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons. However questioned about his absence in South Korea, Howe signalled that his actions might have repercussions. The 47-year-old told reporters: 'You have to earn the right to train with us. We are Newcastle United. 'The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad – you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here. 'We will make sure that any player earns the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.' Isak is understood to have undergone treatment and light training at a deserted training ground on Monday and it remains to be seen whether he will have any involvement in the club's pre-season fixtures against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid this weekend. The striker faces clear-the-air talks with Howe, with his situation becoming seemingly more complicated by the day as a difficult transfer window threatens to spiral further out of control. Newcastle tabled an improved club record bid for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko on Monday in an effort to beat Manchester United to the punch, but developments since suggest the 22-year-old is more likely to head for Old Trafford than St James' Park. That would represent the latest blow in a transfer window which has already seen the Magpies miss out on major targets Dean Huijsen, Bryan Mbeumo, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, James Trafford and Liam Delap. They have managed to recruit Nottingham Forest wide man Anthony Elanga and, on loan, Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, but with frontman Callum Wilson and midfielder Sean Longstaff having left, there is significant work to be done, with the start of the new season just 10 days away. Howe was already looking for a striker before the Isak situation came to a head and, with three years remaining on the Swede's current deal – he has so far resisted the club's overtures to sign a new contract – there seems to be little prospect of the club allowing him to leave either before they have secured a replacement or for much less than their £150m valuation, having already rebuffed Liverpool's initial approach. Meanwhile, sources on Tyneside have played down suggestions that Newcastle have tabled a bid for AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw, but it is understood they are maintaining an interest in the Germany international.

Jim Goodwin accelerates Dundee United transfer plans as Conference League hopes rocked by latest injury setback
Goodwin's side take are in Vienna for the first leg of their crunch Conference League qualifier on Thursday Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin is looking to ramp up his recruitment after he confirmed Ryan Strain and Kristijan Trapanovski could both be out for up to 10 weeks. It is a blow for United to lose the influential pair ahead of Thursday's Europa Conference League clash away to Rapid Vienna. Strain and Trapanovski have both suffered hamstring injuries and could be out for anything between eight to 10 weeks. That is on top of captain Ross Graham who is also out with a similar injury and is not due back until at least October. Goodwin confirmed: 'We've got one or two long-term ones. Ross Graham has been well-documented up to now. Unfortunately, Ryan Strain will be missing for the next eight to ten weeks, as will Trapanowski, who picked up a hamstring injury in the last European game against Strassen. So those three are out long-term.' United have also let Jort van de Sande join SC Cambuur and he admitted that another striker is on his wanted list, along with another couple of positions, although Owen Stirton will get his chance. Goodwin added: 'We had a number of the academy guys come up into the squad but we're hopeful that between now and the next fortnight we'll be able to add another couple of new faces. 'We do want to add another one in that (striker) area but we're not desperate. 'I think the issue that we have at the moment is the likes of (Dario Naamo, (Amar) Fatah, Trapanovski, in the wide areas, is where we're a little bit lighter. 'There are ongoing conversations with players at the moment, as you would expect.' Goodwin accepts United will go in as underdogs but he is looking for his United team to show their bite. He stated: 'You can see with the facility here, the stadium, the infrastructure, it's a big club. A really well run looking professional outfit. 'They went really far in this competition last season, getting to the quarter-finals. They've done some really good business in the transfer window already. 'They have spent a considerable amount of money in the forward areas. We know it's going to be a difficult tie. '(The) Last tie against Strassen, for us, we were probably the favourites in a lot of people's eyes, albeit Strassen made life difficult for us. 'I would imagine tomorrow night we'll probably be the underdogs going into the game. But we have a lot of belief and a lot of confidence in this group. "We know where we're at in terms of the restrictions in the squad with the injuries we have but that's no excuse. We want to make sure we give a really good account of ourselves. 'We want to put on a good show. We want to show ourselves in a good light. 'We want to show people that the teams from the Scottish Premiership are of a good standard. 'We want to make sure we're still in the tie come the return leg at Tannadice.'
