Former Giants managing general partner, longtime lead Microsoft attorney Bill Neukom dies at 83

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Former San Francisco Giants managing general partner Bill Neukom, a bow-tie loving, longtime Microsoft attorney who was at the helm when the team won its first World Series title in 2010, has died. He was 83.
The team announced Neukom's death Thursday. No additional information was provided.
Neukom retired from his role following the 2011 season and after the Giants captured the 2010 World Series for their first of three every-other-year titles that included championships in 2012 and 2014.
The 2010 victory marked the first for the team since moving West in 1958.
'Bill will always hold a special place in our hearts and in the history of this franchise,' Giants CEO Larry Baer said in a statement. 'He was instrumental in helping this organization and its players bring the first World Series Championship to San Francisco in 2010. Bill will always be remembered for not only his leadership of this storied organization but also his colorful bow ties and the fact he'd bring a glove to the ballpark to try and catch foul balls. He was a true gentleman, a dedicated fan and a friend to so many.'
An avid runner who completed more than a half-dozen marathons, Neukom first joined the ownership group in 1995 and became a general partner in 2003. When Peter Magowan retired after the 2008 season, Neukom became managing general partner.
He developed a catchphrase called 'The Giants Way' of playing baseball.
'My idea is that we adhere to it at the minor-league level and all the way up," Neukom said when introduced in October 2008. "It's how you play the game, conditioning, fundamentals, a rigorous spring training regimen, everything. We want the best talent, the best teachers, the best leaders, the best trainers, and we want to have better communication on what we want and how we want it done.'
After retiring, Neukom remained involved with the Giants as chairman emeritus.
He grew up in nearby San Mateo rooting for the Giants and with then-San Francisco Seals owner Charlie Graham as a neighbor. Neukom also loved riding horses and stayed active despite undergoing hip replacement surgery during his Giants tenure.
Serving as top counsel for Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates, Neukom was the company's lead lawyer for nearly 25 years. His Microsoft stake was worth an estimated $107 million when he left in 2001. He was a partner in the Seattle office of the law firm Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis. He also was a past president of the American Bar Association, serving in 2007-08.
Neukom also founded the World Justice Project in 2006, a multinational, multidisciplinary initiative to strengthen the rule of law worldwide.

From hospital bed to EURO 2025 hero: Aitana Bonmati back to her decisive best for Spain

'You could write a book about this,' said Aitana Bonmati on Wednesday as she reflected on the last few weeks in her life after scoring the goal which took Spain into the final of the Women's Euro 2025. At the end of June the world's leading women's footballer was lying in hospital with viral meningitis and it looked like she might not be able to play for Spain at the tournament in Switzerland. Now she is preparing to lead her team into Sunday's final against England in Basel, in a rematch of the 2023 World Cup decider which Spain won, after converting the only goal of the last-four clash with Germany late in extra time. 'When the ball went in I started running around like a crazy person. I didn't know where to go,' a smiling Bonmati said as she spoke to media at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich after collecting the trophy for player of the match. Barcelona midfielder Bonmati, who has won the Ballon d'Or in each of the last two years, was taken into hospital at the end of June after reporting feeling unwell. Tests confirmed that she was suffering from a bout of viral meningitis and Bonmati could only watch from bed as her teammates beat Japan in a friendly. Viral meningitis is less serious than the rarer bacterial variant, which can lead to death within 24 hours, but it still seemed like a long shot for her to recover in time for the Euros. Growing rivalry Yet she did recover, and appeared as a late substitute in Spain's opening game at the tournament, a 5-0 win over Portugal in Bern on July 3. The 27-year-old was back in the starting line-up for Spain's final group match, a 3-1 victory over Italy, and retained her place for the quarter-final against the host nation before scoring the winner against Germany. 'I don't believe in destiny, just in hard work and in my own mentality. I can only thank everyone who has supported me because it has not been easy,' Bonmati admitted. 'She didn't have an easy start to the Euros but she has managed to overcome her health problems and has worked hard to get fit again,' remarked coach Montse Tome. Spain is now into its first-ever senior women's European Championship final, two years after winning the World Cup for the first time. Bonmati was one of the stars of that superb team which defeated England in Sydney, and is now dreaming of another title. ALSO READ | Spain reaches final after 1-0 extra-time win over Germany La Roja are the favourites, even if England is the defending continental champions, for the latest instalment in a growing rivalry between the nations. As well as the 2023 Women's World Cup final, Spain beat England in the final of the men's Euros last year in Berlin. In late May an Arsenal side featuring several members of Sarina Wiegman's current England squad defeated Barcelona in the final of the Women's Champions League. Seven of the players who started for Barcelona that day in Lisbon also started against Germany on Wednesday, among them goalkeeper Cata Coll who made several vital saves before Bonmati got the winner. 'Cata played really well, with some big saves when we were suffering,' Bonmati said of Coll, who missed all of Spain's three group games due to tonsilitis. 'Neither of us had the start we wanted at this Euros due to illness but we are lucky to be here today. 'It shows what can happen in life. In the end we have had good news.'

The 27-year-old left-hander hit a 54 (76) against England at Old Trafford on Thursday (July 24). It was his ninth 50-plus score in England, which is now the most in India's history in the format, going beyond Dhoni's eight. Pant has taken more time than Dhoni — it was the vice-captain's 13th Test in the country, while Dhoni only played 12 — but it now puts him at the top of that chart. The previous best was four, jointly held by Dhoni (twice, against Australia in 2008-09 and England in 2014) and Farokh Engineer (against England in 1972-73). Rishabh Pant hobbles out to a standing ovation from Manchester crowd; Shardul Thakur's incredible gesture…: Watch video

In a gutsy move, India vice-captain Rishabh Pant hobbled down the Old Trafford stairs on Thursday and came out to bat despite fracturing his foot on Day 1 of the ongoing fourth Test against England. Pant received a standing ovation from the Manchester crowd for his courageous act. He immediately went down in visible agony, was carted off the field, and later taken to the hospital for scans. Doctors confirmed a foot fracture, advising a six-week rest—effectively ruling him out of the match. However, on Day 2, the BCCI issued a surprise update stating that Pant had rejoined the team at the ground and was available to bat, although Dhruv Jurel would take over wicketkeeping duties. Most expected Pant to walk in as the final batter, but in a dramatic twist, he chose to bat right after Shardul Thakur was dismissed by Ben Stokes in the 102nd over. As Pant descended the stairs to thunderous applause from the English crowd, Thakur, on his way out, made a stirring gesture—patting Pant on the head in acknowledgment of his bravery. 'This is remarkable' Former cricketer Ian Ward, who was on commentary for Sky Cricket, was all praise for Pant. He said: "Pant is gingerly making his way to the middle. This is quite remarkable, good for him because he is obviously still in great discomfort. Now, anything can happen, apart from quick singles. He is not moving with any great freedom." Former India teammate Dinesh Karthik, on the other hand, was left astounded at Pant's decision to bat just a day after his injury. He added: "We all know the series hangs in the balance, so it's remarkable to see Pant come out to bat, especially with the ball moving around. It will be interesting to see what method of batting he adopts. I'm quite astounded he's out here right now." Pant added just two runs to his overnight score of 37 after playing seven balls on Day 2. India are 321 for six at Lunch.
