Platte County prosecutors last week charged Adrian Horton with one count of first-degree endanger the welfare of a child.
Man sentenced for 2023 killing outside KCK O'Reilly Auto Parts store
According to court documents, Kansas City police officers were called to Children's Mercy Hospital on Oct. 26, 2024, to investigate an assault that occurred on Northwest Milrey Drive, near Northwest 80th Street in the Northland.
Detectives arrived at the hospital and were notified that the infant had sustained a brain bleed, along with multiple other severe injuries.
The child, identified by Kansas City police as Mateo Rideout, died on Nov. 5, 2024. The investigation was upgraded to a homicide.
Detectives interviewed the victim's mother, who stated on Oct. 25, 2024, she and Horton took the child to Horton's parents' house so she and Horton could go grocery shopping. Upon returning, Horton was changing the baby's diaper when Horton's mothers told him to stop being rough and aggressive with the baby, according to court documents.
The mother said back at home and on Oct. 26, 2024, the baby woke up and began to get fussy. She got out of bed, made a bottle and gave it to the child in his bassinette located next to her bed. The child drank an ounce and began to play with it, so she took the bottle from him and laid back down for about an hour, according to court documents.
During that hour, the mother said the baby was making noises and appeared to be fine. Later that morning, he became fussy and started to cry. The mother woke Horton up and asked him to change the baby while she used the restroom. Court documents say as Horton got up, the mother heard him say in a frustrated tone, 'why you always crying bro?'
Court documents say as the mother was walking into the bathroom, she saw Horton remove the baby from the bassinet, walk out of the room, then she heard Horton slam the door. She was finishing up using the bathroom when she heard a loud patting noise coming from the other room. When the patting noise eased, she heard Horton yell her name and for her to come to the room. She took the child from Horton and noticed him gasping for air. She told Horton to call 911, and the child was taken to the hospital by EMS to be evaluated.
The mother told detectives Horton was always frustrated or annoyed when he had to do anything with the baby, according to court documents.

Court documents say Horton's account of what happened with the baby changed several times. At one point, he said after he changed the baby's diaper, the baby started to choke. He tried to rub on the baby's chest, then realized the child was gasping for air. Horton started to apply more pressure then started performing CPR 'the adult way.' When he was performing CPR on the child, that is when he called the mother into the room. Horton said, 'I might have used a little more force than I should have.'
Detectives received a final report back in June from Forensic Medical of Kansas City and Topeka. The cause of death was labeled as complications of blunt force trauma to head and neck – and ruled the death as a homicide.
