Why CIES Values Lamine Yamal As More Than Mbappe And Vinicius Combined

Forbes04-06-2025
Lamine Yamal is not yet 18, but his impact on the game is already getting fans to talk about him in the same breath as legends like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.
Yamal has played just over 5,000 minutes in LaLiga for Barcelona, and has only played 19 games for Spain. But the International Centre for Sports Studies' (CIES) Football Observatory has rated him as the most valuable soccer player in the world.
Not only that, but CIES has given him a value of $458 million. That's more than it values Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior combined.
The next most valuable player according to CIES is Manchester City's Erling Haaland at $272 million, with Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham at $266 million making up the top three.
But why has CIES valued Lamine Yamal so highly?
Firstly, Yamal is a very good soccer player. He's already won LaLiga with Barcelona and the European Championship with Spain where he scored the goal of the tournament. He has been in the LaLiga and Champions League teams of the season and will be one of the contenders for the 2025 Ballon d'Or.
But most of the top players on the list. Including Vinicius Junior and Bellingham, who were both unlucky to miss out on the 2024 Ballon d'Or, have similar recent honors and accolades.
The other reasons that caused CIES to push Yamal's value to such a high figure are his young age, his nationality and the team he plays for, and crucially, that he just signed a new contract last month.
His value on CIES' list for January 2025 was less than half what it has become after that new contract, which is worth around $21 million per year and runs until 2031. Only five players on the list have longer contracts than Yamal. Those players are Erling Haaland, with his mega-contract that runs until 2034, and four players (including Estevao Willian) who are contracted to Chelsea.
Does that mean Yamal is as good as Mbappe and Vinicius Junior combined? No, it just means that because of his contract, it would cost far more to prize him away from Barcelona.
Another interesting feature on CIES' June 2025 valuations is the rise of Paris Saint-Germain, whose Champions League triumph has increased its reputation and subsequently, its players' values.
When Mbappe was at PSG, CIES had once rated him as the world's most valuable soccer player. But on the January 2025 list, PSG only had four players in the top one hundred.
Now, the Parisian club has eleven players on the list. That's the joint-most of any team, along with Real Madrid. CIES rates Joao Neves and Desire Doue as PSG's most valuable players, but it also shows that PSG's value is spread more widely than before, rather than concentrated in a few top players like Mbappe. Paris Saint-Germain's squad is generally considered more balanced than in the recent past, and that is one of the reasons credited for its Champions League win.
Barcelona and Manchester City each have seven players on the list, but perhaps the biggest surprise is that Brighton and Hove Albion has four players and Bournemouth has three players on the list, which is as many players as Bayern Munich.

Celtic held by Kairat Almaty in Champions League play-off

Celtic's Champions League hopes are firmly in the balance after they were held to a goalless draw by Kairat Almaty of Kazakhstan in Glasgow in the first leg of their play-off tie on Wednesday, while Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce played out a goalless draw with Benfica. The Scottish champions pushed Bayern Munich close in the knockout phase play-offs last season after finishing 21st out of 36 teams in the league stage. But Brendan Rodgers's team could not break down the champions of Kazakhstan, who have already come through three qualifying rounds to get to this stage and are eyeing a first ever appearance in the competition proper. James Forrest was denied by a great save from Kairat goalkeeper Aleksandr Zarutskiy right at the start of the second half from one of few clear chances that fell Celtic's way at Parkhead. At the other end, Brazilian Edmilson saw a chip from inside the centre circle for Kairat land on the roof of the net following a mistake by Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers. Daizen Maeda then found himself in behind the Kairat defence late on but could only shoot straight at substitute goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov. Celtic therefore have it all to do when they make the daunting trip east next week to Almaty, not far from Kazakhstan's border with China. "We're disappointed with the result and first-half performance. We didn't start with the intent and mentality we wanted to. We were quite passive," said Rodgers, whose team were booed off at full-time. "There's no doubt we can go there and win. Of course, you want to take an advantage with you, (but) it's still very much in the balance." Fenerbahce and Benfica played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their tie in Istanbul. The Portuguese giants, who lost in the last 16 last season to Barcelona, held on in the pressure cooker atmosphere in Turkey despite having midfielder Florentino sent off in the second half. Benfica therefore have the slight edge going into the return in Lisbon, but Fenerbahce are aiming to reach the Champions League proper for the first time since 2008/09. Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt look certain to reach the league phase of Europe's elite club competition for the first time after a stunning 5-0 home win over Austria's Sturm Graz. Kasper Hogh, Odin Bjortuft and Ulrik Saltnes all scored in the first 25 minutes for last season's Europa League semi-finalists. Hakon Evjen made it four early in the second half and a William Boving own goal completed the rout. Swiss champions Basel drew 1-1 at home to FC Copenhagen in heavy rain at St Jakob-Park. Xherdan Shaqiri's early penalty put Basel in front, but Gabriel Pereira equalised for the Danish side in first-half stoppage time. Basel had substitute Jonas Adjetey sent off late on but held out for a draw as an Andreas Cornelius goal for Copenhagen was ruled out for a marginal offside. as/mw

Mourinho's Fenerbahce draws with Benfica, Bodo/Glimt wins big in Champions League playoffs 1st legs

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) — José Mourinho and Fenerbahce were left Wednesday with a difficult final test in their quest to return to the Champions League, which looks sure to be heading inside the Arctic Circle next month. Fenerbahce drew 0-0 at home against Benfica in the first leg of their qualifying playoff, despite the Portuguese team having a player sent off in the 71st minute. In the north of Norway, Bodo/Glimt's fairytale rise in European soccer continued with a 5-0 rout of Sturm Graz in their playoff first leg. Celtic failed to take home advantage in a 0-0 draw with Kairat Almaty, which hosts the return game four time zones from Scotland in Kazakhstan next Tuesday. Basel captain Xherdan Shaqiri scored early with a penalty but the Swiss champion was held 1-1 at home by Copenhagen. Seven playoffs will be decided with return games on Tuesday and Wednesday next week with the winners completing the 36-team Champions League lineup. The second-leg games include unheralded Pafos of Cyprus holding a 2-1 lead at home against Red Star Belgrade. The Champions League draw ceremony to find out each team's eight opponents in the single-standings league format will be made Aug. 28 in Monaco. Fenerbahce has not played for 17 years in the main Champions League, that Mourinho won twice: with Inter Milan in 2010 and Porto in 2004. Mourinho's team dominated the last 20 minutes of play in Istanbul after Benfica midfielder Florentino was sent off for being shown a second yellow card. A video review confirmed an offside call after Fenerbahce forward Youssef En-Nesyri thought he had scored in the 81st. ___ AP soccer:
