MA in Hindi Journalism? Delhi University to introduce master's programme from upcoming academic session
Delhi University's (DU) is set to introduce Journalism in Hindi and English master's programme soon. The University's Standing Committee on Academic Matters (SCOAM) approved the introduction of MA in Hindi Journalism on the occasion of Hindi Journalism Day, which was celebrated on May 30.
For final approval before implementation from the upcoming academic session, the proposal will move to the academic council, HT reported citing information from three committee members.
As confirmed by Committee member Ram Kishore Yadav, the Hindi medium journalism course will be launched under the Hindi department from the 2025–26 academic session. A committee meeting was held on Friday in this regard where syllabi of select undergraduate courses related for the seventh and eighth was discussed. Besides this, syllabi of several postgraduate programmes were also analysed.
As confirmed by Committee member Ram Kishore Yadav, the Hindi medium journalism course will be introduced by the Hindi department in this academic year. 'A corresponding master's programme in Journalism in English medium, under the English department, is scheduled to begin from the 2026–27 academic session,' HT quoted Ram Kishore Yadav as saying.
Designed in accordance with the postgraduate curriculum framework (PGCF), the newly-approved postgraduate course in Hindi Journalism course comes under Faculty of Arts. Meanwhile, an English-medium counterpart is expected to start from the next academic session, 2026-27 and will be offered under the Department of English.
Apart from discussions on MA in Hindi Journalism, the Friday talks were centred on fourth-year syllabi of several disciplines, including BA Education, BA (Programme and Honours) Hindustani Music, and Geography. Ram Kishore Yadav added, 'Most syllabi were approved without significant changes." Syllabi of several postgraduate courses were also reviewed during the session, including philosophy, economics, geography, sociology, political science and mathematics.

Bar Council of India (BCI) chairman Manan Kumar Mishra on Sunday called for immediate release and fair trial for Sharmishta Panoli, the Instagram influencer who was arrested by Kolkata Police for allegedly making a post claiming the Hindi film actors were silent on Operation Sindoor. The senior advocate and Rajya Sabha member said that he was standing firmly with Panoli, whose arrest and judicial custody for a now-deleted social media video despite her immediate apology represented "an absolute failure of justice and a blatant assault on freedom of expression". The 22-year-old influencer, a resident of Kolkata and enrolled in Pune's Law University, was arrested from Gurugram on Friday night. She was on Saturday produced before a Kolkata court, which sent her in judicial custody till June 13. "It is deeply troubling that the same government that opposed Operation Sindoor -- a decisive counter-terror operation -- meant to avenge the brutal killing of innocents, now seeks to silence a young law student for questioning such similar double standards," said Mishra in a statement. A mere wrong choice of words cannot be called blasphemous and a young law student being made a scapegoat and subjected to harsh legal action, while past atrocities on particular communities by the government-sponsored persons and entities remained unaddressed was "unconscionable", the statement added. "True democracy demands impartiality, restraint and the equal protection of rights, not selective outrage and vendetta," the statement said. "I call upon the Bengal government and its police to abandon this dangerous path of targeting select voices and to uphold the rule of law for all. I demand Sharmishta's immediate release, a fair trial, and an end to the double standards that have long plagued the state's administration of justice," said Mishra.

No anti-incumbency, no bunch of clowns can defeat DMK, says Stalin
Madurai: Sounding the poll bugle for the 2026 assembly election, chief minister M K Stalin launched a caustic attack on his political opponents on Sunday, stating that 'no bunch of clowns can defeat DMK .' Addressing party functionaries at the party's general council meeting at Uthangudi in Madurai, Stalin said there was no anti – incumbency against the DMK govt. `"Rather, there is a wave of pro–incumbency. The support for DMK is much stronger than opposition,'' he said. Stalin said DMK was alive to uphold ideology and its endeavour to win election was to spread the ideology. "That's why no bunch of clowns could defeat us so far. They will never be able to defeat in the future too,'' he said. But there was a concerted effort to project the DMK govt in a bad light, he said. The onslaught by our enemies would increase in the coming days as elections are around the corner. There would be a surge in slanders and attempts would be made to plant falsehood through fake opinion polls. "We should be prepared to defeat those attempts and counter them with truth,'' he said. By this time next year, the headlines would be about DMK's election victory, he said. Stalin took sharp digs at AIADMK and its general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS), accusing him of fully surrendering the party to the BJP . "Now he is trying to surrender Tamil Nadu too to the BJP, which is why Amit Shah keeps visiting the state. But that won't happen," Stalin said. "No matter which Shah visits TN, they cannot rule us. For Delhi, TN will always be out of control," he said. Stalin said EPS wanted the DMK alliance to split and hoped that it would happen if he 'enacts a split with BJP.' Since that didn't happen, he rejoined the BJP front, Stalin said. He however questioned the silence of EPS when Shah announced the BJP – AIADMK alliance. "The conduct of EPS when Shah announced the alliance was more like the way he behaved when Sasikala declared him as CM in 2017,'' Stalin said. Training his guns on BJP, Stalin urged cadres to inform people that if BJP captures power in TN, there would be Hindi imposition, communal and religious clashes. Regression would replace industrial growth, he said. He then took a veiled dig at TVK president Vijay, stating that 'there were some new entrants bent upon duping youth by claiming to be the alternatives.' "We should give a fitting response to them as well,'' he said. Rallying the cadres for the assembly election, Stalin urged them to increase party membership. Bring in more young people. Our movement needs the energy and passion of youth, we need young blood to take our ideology forward, he said. Stalin lavishly praised DMK allies stating that the front's victory was made possible by the allies. ``One key reason for our continued victories is our alliance. Our alliance remains strong because we respect our allies. I treat our alliance leaders with friendship and love. You must do the same,'' he told the cadres. Stalin said beginning June he would meet party functionaries constituency-wise, at Anna Arivalayam. "At that time, we will have one-on-one conversations," he added.

‘Smart' beginnings: TN returns to school today
Chennai: Digital intervention, along with improving reading, writing, and basic arithmetic skills, is the focus in the new academic year as state board schools will reopen on Monday after the summer vacation. With all govt primary schools equipped with smart boards, students will experience digital intervention from Class I onwards this year. Ahead of reopening, city schools have spruced up their campuses and conducted teacher meetings to plan academic activities. "Students will have a unique experience of digital intervention from Class I itself," elementary education director P A Naresh said. All primary schools are provided with smart boards, and middle schools have got hi-tech labs. "Increasing enrolment, sustaining enrolled students, quality intervention, and zero tolerance to Pocso-related offences will be our main focus this year," he further said. With already 1.85 lakh admissions in Class I in govt schools this year, enrolment could exceed four lakh as most parents will enrol their wards in June. We have also instructed the teachers to use online resources for improving pronunciation and spoken language of students," school education director S Kannappan said. To improve basic arithmetic skills, teachers were asked to focus on teaching tables and repeating them every day. The state govt also announced curriculum and syllabus revision for all classes starting from 2025-26. However, citing pending dues from Union govt, the state govt has not conducted RTE admissions in private schools this year. About 70,000 students enrolled in 8,000 private schools every year. Schools such as MCC Higher Secondary School in Chetpet are planning to take foundational classes for exams such as NEET and JEE for students from Class IX and X during the new academic year. "For the lower classes, we are going to concentrate on reading, writing, and spelling contests in the first month," said G Jebadoss Thinakaran, school headmaster. Chennai corporation schools have set a target to increase admissions and improve performance in board exams. "Our priority is to improve our enrolment this year. We also want more top scorers in Classes X and XII board exams. We will try to implement the new initiative to improve reading and writing skills," said Padmaja R, headmistress of Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School in Saidapet. Other board schools, including CBSE, are planning to reopen after the summer vacation, between June 2 and 6.
