BCI chairman seeks release, fair trial for arrested Instagram influencer Sharmishta Panoli

The Hindu2 days ago

Bar Council of India (BCI) chairman Manan Kumar Mishra on Sunday called for immediate release and fair trial for Sharmishta Panoli, the Instagram influencer who was arrested by Kolkata Police for allegedly making a post claiming the Hindi film actors were silent on Operation Sindoor.
The senior advocate and Rajya Sabha member said that he was standing firmly with Panoli, whose arrest and judicial custody for a now-deleted social media video despite her immediate apology represented "an absolute failure of justice and a blatant assault on freedom of expression".
The 22-year-old influencer, a resident of Kolkata and enrolled in Pune's Law University, was arrested from Gurugram on Friday night.
She was on Saturday produced before a Kolkata court, which sent her in judicial custody till June 13.
"It is deeply troubling that the same government that opposed Operation Sindoor -- a decisive counter-terror operation -- meant to avenge the brutal killing of innocents, now seeks to silence a young law student for questioning such similar double standards," said Mishra in a statement.
A mere wrong choice of words cannot be called blasphemous and a young law student being made a scapegoat and subjected to harsh legal action, while past atrocities on particular communities by the government-sponsored persons and entities remained unaddressed was "unconscionable", the statement added.
"True democracy demands impartiality, restraint and the equal protection of rights, not selective outrage and vendetta," the statement said.
"I call upon the Bengal government and its police to abandon this dangerous path of targeting select voices and to uphold the rule of law for all. I demand Sharmishta's immediate release, a fair trial, and an end to the double standards that have long plagued the state's administration of justice," said Mishra.

Harvey Weinstein denied to testify in court in his ongoing criminal case; here's what we know

Harvey Weinstein , the disgraced Hollywood producer, has refused to testify in court as part of his criminal case. While he wanted to take the stand and express his side of the case, the lawyers advised him not to. Why is Harvey Weinstein not going to justify? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Arthur Aidala, Weinstein's attorney, revealed to the reporters that the 73-year-old is seriously contemplating the decision of telling his side of the story by testifying in court. However, the team confirmed on Monday that the producer would not as it would open up to an undue risk. 'He's not hiding, and we're not shielding him. He wants to testify, and we respect that. But the courtroom isn't just about truth — it's also strategy,' the spokesperson of Weinstein, Juda Engelmayer, revealed. As the court does not hold sessions on Monday, the closing arguments will be said on Tuesday, June 3, where the defence is expected to rest the case, after the opening arguments began on April 23. What are the charges against Harvey Weinstein? Weinstein is facing three serious criminal charges of sexual abuse and assault by three women. A former production assistant on 'Project Runway,' Miriam Haley, and Former model Kaja Sokola allege that he forced them into a sexual act, and an aspiring actress, Jessica Mann, alleges that he forced himself on her and assaulted her. The last witness of the case... Similar to his trial in 2020, Harvey Weinstein chose not to take a stand, and manager Thomas Richards Lozano was called as the last witness on Friday. Lozano gave a similar testimony as well, where he stated that he travelled with Jessica Mann and had breakfast with Harvey, without witnessing anything wrong. 'Several of the events of this trial have been a repeat of 2020, sometimes word-for-word,' the outlet reported. Punjab CM Mann draws flak for ‘one nation, one husband' remark post Op Sindoor

Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday hit out at the BJP, accusing the saffron party of politicising Operation Sindoor for electoral gains. The BJP was quick to get back at him and demanded he apologise and resign for making light of the military operation launched on May 7 to avenge the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which the husbands of Hindu women tourists, identified by their sindoor, were targeted. Replying to a question about the BJP campaign for the June 19 Ludhiana West assembly byelection, Mann accused the party of making a mockery of Indian traditions for votes. Alluding to reports that BJP workers are distributing sindoor (vermillion) to households following the success of Operation Sindoor, Mann remarked: 'Will you wear sindoor in (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi's name? Is this One Nation, One Husband?' The BJP denied any such drive to win over voters and its leaders, including Pritpal Singh Balliawal, termed the CM's remarks 'shameful'. BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta is contesting against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) nominee and MP Sanjeev Arora, Congress's Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parupkar Singh Ghumman for the Ludhiana West assembly seat. Describing Mann's remarks as 'vulgarity dressed as leadership', the BJP demanded Mann's resignation. 'He didn't insult the BJP. He insulted every widow of a soldier, every mother of a martyr, every woman of Bharat. And now a question to (AAP national convener) Arvind Kejriwal: Do you support your CM mocking sindoor, a sacred symbol worn by your own wife? Or will you stay silent just to protect your politics? Mann must resign and apologise to the nation,' the party posted on X, adding 'He can't grasp the meaning of sindoor — a symbol of love, sacrifice, and strength for every Indian woman.'

SUV hits man, flinging him into drain in Noida; police launch probe as video goes viral

A Mahindra Thar SUV rammed into a man, sending him flying into a roadside drain in Noida's Sector 53 on Monday, the police said Tuesday, adding that they have registered a case and are trying to trace the accused. The incident, a video of which has gone viral, appeared to be the fallout of an online spat. 'On Monday, a scuffle occurred between two groups near Sector 53, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Sector 24 police station,' said Sumit Kumar Shukla, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Noida. 'A video also went viral in which one party rammed the other with their vehicle. When we investigated, we found that the dispute between the two parties happened over some comments on Instagram,' the ADCP stated. Both groups are familiar with each other, he said. In a purported video of the incident, a man who is bleeding through his nose can be seen walking alone on the streets when a black Thar hits him from behind and sends him flying into the empty drain. The man, identified as Saurabh, 24, said he had gone to meet a friend in Noida along with his younger brother. 'My friend had called me saying that a group of men had been misbehaving with him. When we reached there, I realised that these were the same men who had earlier filed a case against us which was quashed over lack of evidence.' 'They soon started attacking us with sticks, rods and knives. They hit me with the Thar twice,' he alleged. The Sector 24 police have registered a case for rash driving, causing hurt, and criminal intimidation. 'We have sent the injured people for a medical examination and have formed three teams to nab the accused and take the vehicle into possession,' Shukla said. The police are trying to identify the accused and arrests will be made soon, the ADCP added. Neetika Jha is a trainee reporter with The Indian Express, Delhi.
