China's 12-year-old swimming sensation Yu Zidi becomes youngest medalist in World Aquatics Championships history
Yu became the youngest ever medalist at the competition after being part of China's bronze medal winning team in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay in Singapore.
Although she did not compete in Thursday's final, Yu was eligible for a medal as she swam in the preliminary race to qualify her country for the final.
Australia's team of Lani Pallister, Jamie Perkins, Brittany Castelluzzo and Mollie O'Callaghan won gold in a time of 7:39.35, with the US earning silver in 7:40.01 and China finishing almost three seconds after the Americans in third in 7:42.99.
Yu had narrowly missed out on an individual medal in the women's 200m butterfly earlier on Thursday after finishing fourth, 0.31 seconds behind third-placed Elizabeth Dekkers of Australia.
She also finished fourth and just outside a medal position in the women's 200m medley on Monday, touching the wall 0.06 seconds behind bronze winner Mary-Sophie Harvey of Canada.
She will have one more opportunity to win an individual medal at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships when she competes in the women's 400m medley, with both the heats and the final on Sunday.
Yu's participation in the World Aquatics Championships has led to questions over the competition's eligibility rules. Swimming governing body World Aquatics has a minimum age requirement of 14 for the world championships, but Yu's times are so fast that she qualifies regardless.
Brent Nowicki, the executive director of World Aquatics, admitted during the championships that the governing body will have to review its guidelines in the future.
'I didn't think I'd have this conversation, but now I think we have to go back and say, 'Is this appropriate?'' Nowicki told reporters in Singapore, per the Associated Press. 'Is this really the right way to go forward and do we need to do other things? Put other guardrails up? Do we allow it under certain conditions? I don't know the answer.'

AFL fans call out Demons over Simon Goodwin's farewell snub as club great in shock
Melbourne Demons great Garry Lyon has been left shocked at the timing of Simon Goodwin's axing with three games left to go in the season with suggestions the veteran is unlikely to coach a farewell game. On Tuesday morning it emerged the Melbourne Demons had sacked Goodwin following a convincing 83-point win over West Coast. There were suggestions Goodwin would be let go if Melbourne lost to West Coast on the weekend. The demolition of the lowly Eagles seemed to quell the noise momentarily with a decision to be made at the end of the season. Although the win didn't save Goodwin from the axe with the timing of the move leaving supporters in shock. Goodwin coached Melbourne to their first premiership in 57 years years back in 2021 having taken over from Paul Roos. But Goodwin had only managed to coach the Demons to seven wins in 2025 and performances across the last few years had prompted calls for change. And Lyon admitted he was struggling to get his head around the decision to pull the trigger with three games left to go. Speaking on SEN Radio as the news dropped, Lyon suggested there might not be a farewell game for Goodwin who deserved a send off having delivered the side their only premiership in recent times. 'I'm stunned, shocked, totally shocked,' Lyon said on SEN Radio. 'I had no heads up on this whatsoever. Absolutely just shocked, I can't get my head around it. He won't be coaching a farewell game, that's something I can promise you.' And fans have echoed Lyon's confusion to why the decision happened now. Many feel the Demons had left the decision so late it was only right to let Goodwin see out the season and have a farewell. With little to play for, the fans could have got behind the coach with three games left if they let him ride out the season. Unfortunately, it appears Goodwin and Melbourne will go their separate ways immediately with the supporters most likely not given an opportunity to get behind their premiership-winning coach one last time. This is a massive call.' Melbourne making moves with Simon Goodwin axing After Melbourne capitulated in round 20, Goodwin shut down outside noise and said he was fully committed to the job at hand. "I feel incredibly supported by the board, I have for nine years," Goodwin said last Thursday. "We've been able to go through these challenges before with clarity and strength and stability to create success." Goodwin won the 2021 flag with one of the youngest teams of the modern era and started their 2022 title defence in solid form. However, Goodwin couldn't get past the early stages of the finals since the flag having exited in straight sets in 2022 and 2023. Last year, Melbourne finished in 14th and they currently sit in 12th and are out of finals contention. The Demons hierarchy may have called time on Goodwin's season with three games to go in a bid to get ahead of their rivals in the search for a new head coach. There are suggestions a number of teams could be looking at change for the 2026 season and the Demons have made their move first. Only last week, AFL great Matthew Lloyd claimed he didn't think a win against the Eagles would ease the pressure on Goodwin's tenure as coach. "I don't think so, no," Lloyd said when asked on Nine's Today Show. "Moreso if they lost that game, that could spell the end for Simon Goodwin you would think, if they were to lose to West Coast who have won one game for the season. They have been off for a couple of years now, there is something not quite right."

How The World Games Is A Springboard For Sports Going For The Olympics
You would have seen it there first: long before they became part of the Olympic Games, sport climbing, breaking, lacrosse, and flag football were pillars of The World Games, a once-in-a-quadrennium event that has become a pipeline for aspiring Olympic sports. Specifically for sports and disciplines that aren't part of the Olympic program, The World Games debuted in California in 1981, where first titles were awarded in tug-of-war. During the past several years The World Games and its parent organization the International World Games Association (IWGA) have worked to showcase its unique identity more. The upcoming edition, which begins August 6 in Chengdu, China, promises to be more accessible and high-profile than ever. 'We want to bring the Games closer to the fans,' IWGA President Jose Perurena affirmed in a 2023 interview. After a triumphal return to the United States in 2022, where spectators goggled at sumo wrestling in downtown Birmingham, Alabama, and crooned along with Lionel Ritchie during the closing ceremony, the event has moved to Chengdu, the emerging sports hub of western China. The Chengdu Games will begin with an opening ceremony that features a parade of the more than 100 nations involved. The 11-day schedule has more than 4000 athletes competing for titles in 34 sports including floorball, orienteering, and inline skating, then retiring to their housing in the all-inclusive athletes village designed to spur community-building and cultural exchange. There's also a torch relay and a recently launched global streaming platform, The World Games Live, that will allow viewers to watch extensive coverage free as it unfolds or on demand later. Influencing — influenced by — the Olympics If all this sounds rather Olympic, that's partly the point. For athletes in dance sport or dragon boat racing, The World Games offers athletes whose sports happen to fall outside the spotlight cast by the Olympics the unique chance to be part of something larger than life. For sports hoping to become part of the Olympics one day, which is basically all of them, it's an audition before the International Olympic Committee, which will be watching closely and contemplating what might good adds for future Games. 'There is no clear red line between Olympic and non-Olympic sports any more,' said Perurena, a 1968 Olympian who has been President of the International Canoe Federation. The Spaniard takes pride noting that at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics four World Games sports, including sport climbing, became part of the Olympics. Breaking made its Olympic debut in Paris last summer. Baseball and softball, lacrosse, flag football and squash have been confirmed for Los Angeles in 2028. The IOC is selective about the sports it lets into the Olympics, which generally have to demonstrate global appeal and be practiced in several dozen countries. With The World Games, athletes and federations alike get something that's mutually beneficial. 'Our athletes are the winners in this development. They are receiving more and more of the attention they deserve,' Perurena said. 'Our event represents the whole diversity of sport, and is thus this kind of showcase. This is both a challenge and a commitment for the Games in Chengdu. Expectations are high."
