British Open: Rory McIlroy produces the most bizarre shot of his life

Yahoo19-07-2025
So, this was weird: Rory McIlroy, playing his second shot from the rough on the 11th at Royal Portrush in Round 3 of the British Open, somehow managed to unearth another ball in mid-swing. Seriously, look at this:
Here's another look:
The second ball was apparently embedded in the ground a few inches ahead of McIlroy's ball, and popped into the air as McIlroy's shot flew greenward.
McIlroy tossed the extra ball aside. For the record, it was a Titleist 4, and it ended up in the hands of a lucky fan:
Alas, because McIlroy didn't replace the ball in its original spot, the R&A hit Shane Lowry with a two-shot penalty. (Kidding. Maybe.)
McIlroy would go on to bogey the hole.
After a hot three-birdies-in-four-holes start, McIlroy cooled off slightly, parring the next six holes before the weirdest bogey at 11.

Wycombe bring in goalkeeper Moore

Wycombe Wanderers have signed former Morecambe goalkeeper Stuart Moore. The 30-year-old, who left Morecambe when his contract ended earlier this summer, began his career at Reading and also has had spells at Peterborough, Luton, Swindon and MK Dons. He was part of the Blackpool squad which won the League Two play-off final in 2021. Wycombe head coach Mike Dodds told the club's website, "Stuart's a great person to bring into the club to work with our other first-team goalkeepers and make sure we've got the right depth in that department for the season ahead." He continued, "He's picked up really good experience at various clubs and we're pleased he's agreed to join us and be part of what we're building here." Moore is the Chairboys' 10th signing of the summer and will compete for the number one spot with Mikki van Sass and Will Norris. Wycombe will begin their League One campaign at Bradford City on Saturday (15:00 BST). Transfers - July 2025 Wycombe sign Brighton midfielder Mullins

'Monumental errors' outweigh Meslier positivity

Goalkeeper Lucas Perri is the latest addition to Leeds United's defensive ranks and joins a pretty full-looking goalkeeping department. Which means one thing. Someone will leave. The new man comes expecting to be first choice and with some billing. Back in February, his coach at Lyon, Paulo Fonseca, called the Brazilian 'the strongest goalkeeper in the world' after an impressive display against Marseille. At one stage, some might have felt that tag could, down the line, have been used for Illan Meslier. However he now looks the most obvious option to depart. Sadly, for the Frenchman statistics such as becoming the youngest ever goalkeeper to keep 10 Premier League clean sheets, have been outweighed by numerous monumental errors over the past 12 months. Regular listeners to our podcast 'Don't Go To Bed Just Yet' will know I have long defended the 25-year-old. However, on episode 135 even my faith began to wobble following his display in the 3-3 draw at Hull. Daniel Farke's support, at that time, remained steadfast as it would be over two months before further errors against Swansea saw Karl Darlow given the nod at Kenilworth Road. The Welshman performed well when called upon, but he will surely now find himself back in the unique supporting role of a back-up stopper. Alex Cairns is the fourth currently on the books and, like Darlow is classed as a homegrown player. Add to that him being a local lad who isn't expecting to play and you have an ideal third choice. If Meslier is the one to seek pastures new I would add just one thing…a hefty sell-on clause…just in case! Luke Littler says practice made perfect after World Matchplay success

Luke Littler feels hours of dedication on the practice board proved key to his World Matchplay success and completing the PDC Triple Crown as he targets maintaining his top form through the rest of the year. Littler, 18, claimed a hard-fought victory over veteran James Wade at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, becoming only the fifth player to lift the coveted title alongside the World Championship and Premier League. Next up on the PDC schedule is a trip Down Under for the back-to-back Australia and New Zealand Darts Masters in August, before attention turns towards the end-of-year run-in. 'What I have achieved so far is unbelievable for myself,' Littler told the PA news agency. 'I didn't expect it to go my way, but it is just all down to me practising and playing really good darts. 'The Matchplay win was just so good. I practised quite a lot leading up to it, the most I had done in some time – and it certainly paid off as I completed the Triple Crown.' Littler knows every success then raises the level of expectation on his young shoulders. 'If you come into a tournament and you are the champion, I think people can expect you to try and defend it, because you have been there before and you have won it before, but that is not always the case,' the world number two said. 'Even this year with the Premier League, it was not easy trying to defend it – and on the night (of the final) Luke Humphries played his best darts and won it. 'But leading up to the Grand Slam (of Darts, in November), I want to defend that and also try to pick up some more titles along the way.' Littler added: 'Ever since my first World Championships, where I was runner-up and started on the (PDC) Tour, I think everyone just wanted to beat me. 'It is still the same now because these players want to be the best and have always wanted to beat me, but most of the time I do come out victorious.' The 18-year-old's achievements have transcended the sport – helping darts reach to a new audience and a younger generation. 'For what I have done, it has definitely spurred a lot of people on to get into their darts,' Littler said. 'But for myself, I have got to keep winning, keep picking up trophies and get even more people involved.' Littler has teamed up with KP Snacks 'Nuts for Darts' campaign, which will see one pub win an appearance from the world champion. 'There are so many pub leagues that I played in when I was younger, this is where game of darts has come from,' he said. 'That is where I started and where most of these big top players started is in pubs, so this is about giving those pubs an opportunity for an appearance from me.' :: KP Nuts are giving one lucky pub the chance to win an appearance from Luke Littler as part of the 'Nuts for Darts' campaign. Rally your landlord to pick up a promotional pub card to enter from August 11.
