For first time, KRS dam full in June, Karnataka CM offers bagina
The district administration and Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd officials had put up stunning floral replicas of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and Sir M Visvesvaraya at the entrance of the dam, paying homage to the visionaries behind the reservoir. Women dressed in traditional attire participated in the Poorna Kumbha ritual, even as the red and yellow Karnataka flag fluttered along the dam and at Brindavan Gardens.
The CM, along with his cabinet members and officials from Mandya and Mysuru districts, took part in the bagina ceremony. The bagina, a traditional offering of a saree, blouse piece, turmeric, vermilion, bangles, rice, flowers, and fruits, arranged on a bamboo tray, was let into the waters at the dam.
Taking on opposition parties, Siddaramaiah said, 'There were 17 years when KRS didn't have water. When we were in power during drought years, they blamed Congress and me personally. But today, nature has answered those lies. This is proof that nature favours truth and hard work making this a historic day.' He asserted that opposition parties BJP and JDS should stop spreading lies and think that people are fools.
Siddaramaiah said his government has sanctioned Rs 25,000 crore to irrigation projects which no previous government has done. 'How could such a large sum be allocated if the government was facing a financial crisis as claimed by opposition parties,' he asked.
The government gives out Rs 19,000 crore annually as a pumpset subsidy to farmers, he said, stressing that Karnataka is the only state that is strictly adhering to the Fiscal Responsibility Act, while it has been ranked second in GST collection in the country.

Both ministers acknowledged the state's financial difficulties inherited from the previous administration but emphasised the coalition government's unwavering commitment to welfare programmes. Minister Swamy stated that despite the state's financial deficit, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is implementing the Super Six schemes promised during elections through his administrative efficiency. He highlighted that the coalition government stands at the forefront of executing comprehensive welfare programmes, with development and welfare becoming synonymous with the current administration. Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar clarified that despite the financial burden on the state treasury, the coalition government has significantly increased social pensions, ensuring they reach all eligible beneficiaries. He said that the government has recently deposited money into the accounts of mothers with school-going children under the Talliki Vandanam scheme, demonstrating the broader welfare agenda beyond pensions.

GST Collections Rise 6.2% To Touch Rs 1.85 Lakh Crore In June
New Delhi: India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection rose to Rs 1.85 lakh crore during June this year, marking a 6.2 per cent increase compared to the same month of the previous year, according to official data released on Tuesday. Although collections registered a robust growth to remain above Rs 1.8 lakh crore, they were lower than the all-time high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore recorded in April and Rs 2.01 lakh crore in May. As GST completes 8 years of its rollout on Tuesday, the government said that the collections have doubled over the past five years to reach a record Rs 22.08 lakh crore in FY25, up from Rs 11.37 lakh crore in FY21. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that eight years after GST was introduced on July 1, 2017, it stands out as a landmark reform that has reshaped India's economic landscape. "By reducing the compliance burden, it has greatly improved the Ease of Doing Business, particularly for small and medium enterprises. GST has also served as a powerful engine for economic growth, while fostering true cooperative federalism by making states equal partners in this journey to integrate India's market," the Prime Minister said in a statement on X. The number of taxpayers has more than doubled from 60 lakh to over 1.51 crore over the last 8 years under the GST regime. The average monthly collection stood at Rs 1.84 lakh crore in 2024-25, a blockbuster year. In 2020–21, the total collection was Rs 11.37 lakh crore, with a monthly average of Rs 95,000 crore. The following year, it rose to Rs 14.83 lakh crore, and then to Rs 18.08 lakh crore in 2022–23. In 2023–24, GST collections reached Rs 20.18 lakh crore, showing consistent growth in compliance and economic activity. The One-Nation One-Tax made tax compliance easier, reduced costs for businesses, and allowed goods to move freely across states. It brought together a wide range of indirect taxes under one umbrella by replacing levies like excise duty, service tax, VAT and others. This helped remove the cascading effect of taxes and brought consistency in the tax system across the country. According to a Deloitte survey, 85 per cent of taxpayers have reported 'a positive experience with GST' and view it as a more simplified and transparent tax process that facilitated the ease of doing business. A study by the Finance Ministry noted that GST helped households save at least four per cent on monthly expenses in total. Consumers now spend less on daily necessities. GST has also transformed the logistics industry. Long queues of trucks at state borders and corruption-prone checkpoints have become a thing of the past. Goods now move faster and more freely across state lines. Transport time has improved by over 33 per cent, according to several studies. Companies have cut down on fuel costs, and major highways are less congested.

Washington: Donald Trump on Tuesday floated his daughter-in-law Lara Trump as a possible replacement for U.S. Senator Thom Tillis, who will not seek reelection in North Carolina after clashing with the U.S. president over his tax-cut and spending bill. "Somebody that would really be great is Lara," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he returned from a trip to Florida. "She grew up there, but they live in Florida," Trump said. "She's a great person, Lara Trump. I mean, that would always be my first choice. But she doesn't live there now, but she's there all the time." The North Carolina seat is seen as one of the few competitive Senate races in the 2026 midterm elections, when control of both chambers of Congress will be at stake. Tillis was one of just three Republicans to vote against Trump's signature bill, which passed on Tuesday by the narrowest of margins. It now goes back to the House of Representatives for possible final approval. Tillis cited concerns over how the proposed legislation's cuts to the Medicaid healthcare program for lower-income Americans could impact his constituents. His objection to the bill angered Trump, who said he would consider supporting challengers to Tillis before the incumbent announced he would not seek another six-year term. Lara Trump, who is married to Donald Trump's son Eric, is a native of North Carolina and served as co-chair of the Republican National Committee in the lead-up to the 2024 election. She weighed a bid to replace Senator Marco Rubio of Florida when he left Congress to become Trump's secretary of state, but ultimately decided against being considered. Earlier this year, she joined FOX News Channel and hosts the weekly show "My View with Lara Trump." While the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives is considered up for grabs next year, Democrats face an uphill battle in trying to reclaim a Senate majority. Republicans hold a 53-47 edge, and all but two Republicans who were up for election - Tillis and Susan Collins in Maine - are in states that Trump carried easily in the 2024 presidential election. Trump won North Carolina by 3 percentage points in the 2024 election. Former U.S. Representative Wiley Nickel is the most prominent Democrat who had announced a run against Tillis.
