Abhimanyu treading path graced by Dasara veterans
1 2 3 Mysuru: Abhimanyu, the lead Dasara elephant, is poised to retire from his role upon turning 60 later this year, marking the end of a distinguished service. Elephants have been an integral part of Mysuru Dasara celebrations for more than four centuries. The tradition, initiated by the Vijayanagar Empire and celebrated by the maharajas of Mysuru from 1610, continues until this day. Among the lead Dasara elephants, Jayamarthanda is a notable name. Captured near Bettadapura in Periyapatna during the reign of Maharaja Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, Jayamarthanda was the first to carry the golden howdah. From 1870 to 1915, he served as the lead elephant -- the longest recorded stint. During this period, he carried Maharajas Chamaraja Wadiyar and Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar during Dasara processions. Unlike now, the maharajas used to sit in the golden howdah. After the state govt took over the celebrations in the 1970s, instead of the maharaja, the idol of Chamundeshwari started being placed in the howdah. Nearly 11 feet tall and weighing around 7,000 kg, Jayamarthanda was admired for his grace and strength. Historian PV Nanjaraja Urs noted that Jayamarthanda was highly esteemed by Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, leading to the naming of the entry gate of the rebuilt Mysuru Palace as Jayamarthanda Gate, through which the participating elephants enter the palace every year even now. Historian NS Rangaraju explained that the selection of a lead elephant for the 10-day Dasara celebration involves meticulous evaluation of the jumbo's physical attributes and behaviour. Factors such as height, tusk condition, flatness of the back, gait, and temperament are carefully assessed before finalising the lead elephant. This practice continues until this day, with foresters selecting elephants based on these criteria. Until 1971, the lead elephant used to carry the Maharaja of Mysuru and his heir in the Golden Ambari (howdah), accommodating two individuals as part of the celebrations. Following Jayamarthanda, other notable elephants such as Vijayabahadur, Nanjunda, Ramaprasad, and Mothilalraj have carried the howdah. Airavata gained international recognition through the Hollywood film 'The Elephant Boy', with its mahout playing the lead role. Biligiri, who stood at 10.5 feet tall and weighed approximately 7,000 kg, was the last elephant to carry the maharajas. Rajendra, who was featured in the renowned Kannada song 'Naavaduva Nudiye Kannada Nudi' from the film 'Gandhada Gudi', starring Rajkumar, was the first to carry the howdah with the idol of the goddess placed inside. Other elephants include Dhrona, who carried the howdah 18 times and appeared in the Hindi serial 'The Sword of Tipu Sultan'. In 1998, while grazing in the forest, Dhrona came into contact with a live electric wire, resulting in the death of the giant elephant. He was succeeded by Balarama, known for his calm nature, who carried the howdah for 11 years, while Arjuna served for eight years before Abhimanyu assumed the responsibility. He has been on the job for the last five years.

For first time, KRS dam full in June, Karnataka CM offers bagina
MYSURU: In a moment soaked in history, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah offered bagina to the Cauvery at the Krishnaraja Sagara (KRS) Dam at 1.35 pm on Monday. This is the first time ever that the KRS dam, one of the state's lifelines, has reached its Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 124.80 ft in June itself, since it became operational in 1932. The district administration and Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd officials had put up stunning floral replicas of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and Sir M Visvesvaraya at the entrance of the dam, paying homage to the visionaries behind the reservoir. Women dressed in traditional attire participated in the Poorna Kumbha ritual, even as the red and yellow Karnataka flag fluttered along the dam and at Brindavan Gardens. The CM, along with his cabinet members and officials from Mandya and Mysuru districts, took part in the bagina ceremony. The bagina, a traditional offering of a saree, blouse piece, turmeric, vermilion, bangles, rice, flowers, and fruits, arranged on a bamboo tray, was let into the waters at the dam. Taking on opposition parties, Siddaramaiah said, 'There were 17 years when KRS didn't have water. When we were in power during drought years, they blamed Congress and me personally. But today, nature has answered those lies. This is proof that nature favours truth and hard work making this a historic day.' He asserted that opposition parties BJP and JDS should stop spreading lies and think that people are fools. Siddaramaiah said his government has sanctioned Rs 25,000 crore to irrigation projects which no previous government has done. 'How could such a large sum be allocated if the government was facing a financial crisis as claimed by opposition parties,' he asked. The government gives out Rs 19,000 crore annually as a pumpset subsidy to farmers, he said, stressing that Karnataka is the only state that is strictly adhering to the Fiscal Responsibility Act, while it has been ranked second in GST collection in the country.

Mysuru NGO to mark Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar's birth anniversary tomorrow
City-based NGO HEARt Organisation will celebrate Daanothsava 2025 to mark the birth anniversary of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, on Thursday. According to a release, the HEARt Organisation was launched with the objective to nurture and revive these essential qualities before they wither away at a time when human values and social harmony are noticeably declining in society. One of its initiatives is the annual program called Daanotsava or ''Festival of Giving,'' the release added. It is held to commemorate the birth anniversary of Krishnaraja Wadiyar every year at different schools and this year's event will be conducted at Mysore International School. ''Students will voluntarily donate rice or essential groceries according to their capacity and the collected items will then be handed over to a recognized ashram in the presence of the students'', according to the organizers. The initiative not only encourages children to share a portion of their resources with the less fortunate—such as orphans, the destitute, and the homeless—but also inspires them to lead a meaningful life, the organizers added.
