Stocks to buy or sell: Dharmesh Shah of ICICI Sec suggests buying JSW Energy, Chalet Hotel shares tomorrow- 21 July 2025
By the end of trading, the Sensex fell by 501.51 points, or 0.61%, closing at 81,757.73, while the Nifty 50 dropped by 143.05 points, or 0.57%, to finish at 24,968.40.
Throughout the week, Indian equity markets showed a mixed performance, with both the Nifty 50 Index and Sensex sliding by 1%, whereas small-cap stocks gained 1.4% and mid-caps increased by 1% in the same period.
Investors are now looking forward to updates on trade negotiations with the US as the August 1 deadline approaches, following President Donald Trump's previous remarks suggesting that a deal with India is nearly finalized. Analysts predict that the markets are likely to see a significant change only after a concrete resolution is reached in the trade discussions with the US.
Dharmesh Shah of ICICI Securities expects Nifty 50 to find supportive efforts in the vicinity of 24,800 zone and gradually stage a rebound wherein 25,800 would continue to act as resistance. Shah has recommended two stocks to buy for short-term. Investors should consult experts before making decisions. Here's what he expects from Indian stock market next week, along with his stock recommendation.
Equity benchmarks extended losses over third consecutive week in the absence of clarity on India - US bilateral trade deal. Nifty 50 lost 0.7% to settle the week at 24968. However, broader showed resilience, outperforming by gaining 1% during the week. Sectorally, Realty, PSU Bank, Auto remained at forefront while Defence, IT extended losses. The weekly price action formed a small bear candle carrying lower high-low, indicating extended breather.
In the upcoming week, volatility to remain elevated as one third of Nifty 50 weightage is coming out with the Q1 earnings post market hours on Friday along with that any development on the US bilateral trade agreement would trigger momentum in the market. With current 2.9% correction, Nifty 50 has approached lower band of rising channel. We expect index to find supportive efforts in the vicinity of 24,800 zone and gradually stage a rebound wherein 25,800 would continue to act as resistance.
Despite weakness in the benchmark, the market breadth has seen improvement as currently 65% of stocks of Nifty 500 universe are trading above their 200 days SMA compared to last week's reading of 60% while last month reading was 52%. The consistent improvement in the market breadth signifies inherent strength.
Structurally, since April intermediate corrections have been limited to 3% while sustaining above its 50 days EMA. In addition to that, over past 14-days index has retraced 61.80% of preceding 11-days 5% up move. Slower pace of retracement indicating robust price structure that bodes well for next leg of up move. Hence, focus should be on accumulating quality stocks on dip backed by strong earnings as strong support is placed at 24,500 being confluence of 100 days EMA and June month low.
a. Earnings update from index heavy weights would be important to watch out for.
b. All eyes will be on outcome of US-India bilateral trade deal.
c. Falling US Dollar index would result into FII's inflow.
d. India VIX has extended losses and sustaining below one year low of 12, indicating participants anxiety at lowest level.
Dharmesh Shah of ICICI Securities recommends buying JSW Energy, and Chalet Hotel shares this week.
1. Buy JSW Energy shares in the range of ₹ 523- 535. He has JSW Energy share price target of ₹ 572 with a stop loss of ₹ 509.
2. Buy Chalet Hotel shares in the range of ₹ 865-890. He has Chalet Hotel share price target of ₹ 1,010 with a stop loss of ₹ 818.

India and UK sign free trade agreement, PM Modi says farmers, MSMEs will benefit
India and the United Kingdom on Thursday signed a Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement. The free trade agreement was signed by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and his British counterpart Jonanthan Reynolds during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United Kingdom. 'Today marks a historic day in our bilateral relations,' Modi said in a press statement beside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer after the signing. He said that the agreement aimed to benefit Indian farmers, the micro, small and medium enterprises sector, footwear and jewellery exports, as well as the seafood and engineering goods sectors. Modi also said that British medical devices and aerospace parts would be more easily sold in India. Starmer, on his part, said that the trade deal would help British workers in cutting-edge manufacturing, and would also benefit whiskey distillers across Scotland and the service sector in London, Manchester and Leeds. The UK prime minister said that the agreement was 'the biggest and most economically significant' trade deal the United Kingdom has made since Brexit – when Britain exited the European Union in 2016. The UK government said that the trade deal was set to increase bilateral trade between the two countries by nearly 39% in the long run, The Indian Express reported. This would be equivalent to $34 billion a year compared with the projected 2040 levels of trade in the absence of an agreement, currently at $21 billion annually. In his statement, Modi also thanked Starmer for his support after the Pahalgam terror attack. 'We are united in the belief that there is no place for double standards in the fight against terrorism,' the Indian prime minister said. The terror attack at Baisaran near Pahalgam town in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 left 26 persons dead and 16 injured. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those killed were Hindu. 'We also agree that the forces which espouse extremist ideologies should not be allowed to misuse democratic freedoms,' Modi added. 'Those who misuse democratic freedoms to undermine democracy itself must be held to account.' The Indian prime minister also said that 'today's era demands development, not expansionism'. New Delhi and Britain had announced the free trade agreement in May after more than three years and 14 rounds of negotiations. With the agreement, India opens its doors to high-end British cars and whisky in a phased manner. The agreement ensures comprehensive market access for goods across all sectors, covering all of India's export interests, The Indian Express reported. India's Commerce and Industry Ministry had earlier said that the country would benefit from tariff elimination on approximately 99% of tariff lines, covering nearly 100% of trade value.

Nestlé India Q1 profit falls 12% on higher input, finance costs
New Delhi: Nestlé India Ltd's profit fell in the June quarter because of input cost pressure and higher finance costs for the maker of Maggi noodles and KitKat chocolate. The packaged food company's profit after tax dropped 11.7% year-on-year to ₹ 659.2 crore in the first quarter of FY26, according to its exchange disclosures on Thursday. Total sales grew 5.8% year-on-year to ₹ 5,074 crore during the quarter. The company's expenses increased 9.25%, driven by higher finance and interest costs on employee benefits. "The quarter was impacted by elevated consumption prices across the commodity portfolio. In addition, we witnessed higher operations costs as a result of significant expansion in manufacturing in the last seven to eight months,' said Suresh Narayanan, chairman and managing director, Nestlé India. 'Moreover, borrowing from commercial banks to fund temporary operational cash-flow requirements resulted in higher finance costs in the quarter.' However, Narayanan said, 'We have noticed stabilizing prices for edible oil and cocoa, a declining trend in coffee and stabilizing to modest increase in pricing of milk.' Ebitda at ₹ 1,101.0 crore was flat year-on-year and 6% below estimates of ₹ 1,173 crore, driven by gross margin compression and higher operating expenses. Ebitda is earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, a measure of operational profitability. The company delivered balanced growth in three out of its four product group categories. Nestlé, which sells coffee, noodles, chocolates, packaged milk, yogurt, and pet food, experienced high input costs over the past few quarters as prices of coffee and cocoa remained elevated. However, coffee prices are expected to remain range-bound at current lower levels, as the upcoming Vietnam crop appears to be normal, the company said. Cocoa and edible oil prices have stabilized and remain range-bound. Milk prices are anticipated to decrease with the onset of a favourable monsoon and flush season, the company said. Analysts said Nestlé's volume growth was 'modest' and the company missed margin expectations due to input cost pressure. 'Nestlé's top-line momentum remains muted for the fifth consecutive quarter, impacted by a broader urban demand slowdown,' brokerage Equirus Research said in a note. 'While key categories such as beverages, confectionery, and prepared dishes saw healthy traction, overall growth was weighed down by continued weakness in the nutrition portfolio. Commodity cost trends warrant close monitoring, as margin recovery may remain constrained in the near term.' Shares of Nestlé closed 5.41% lower at ₹ 2,320.15 apiece on the BSE on Thursday compared with a 0.66% decline in the benchmark Sensex. The prepared dishes and cooking aids category swung back to volume growth, recording double-digit rise for Maggi noodles, said Narayanan. The confectionery category saw high double-digit growth, driven by underlying volume growth. The milk products and nutrition category reported a mixed performance, with certain segments showing growth while a few recording a muted performance. E-commerce maintained its growth momentum, contributing 12.5% of domestic sales, driven by quick commerce and new launches.
