(GSEC) India in Hyderabad. This is first such facility of the company in the Asia-Pacific region and fourth globally. Inaugurated on June 17 by Telangana CM Anumula Revanth Reddy, and IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu the centre is part of Google's broader mission to advance

cybersecurity
, and user protection amid India's rapidly evolving
digital landscape
.
GSEC India
is poised to become an operational core where Google's global safety expertise will translate into tangible solutions. It brings together diverse teams focused on privacy and security engineering, alongside advanced cybersecurity capabilities, under one strategic umbrella to address India's unique and evolving digital landscape.
The center will operationalize the three foundational pillars of Google's recently unveiled Safety Charter for India's AI-led Transformation:
Keeping end users safe from online fraud and scams.
Strengthening cybersecurity for government and enterprise infrastructure.
Building AI responsibly.
Beyond India, GSEC India will also serve as a regional hub for developing and deploying safety solutions across the broader Asia-Pacific region.
Preeti Lobana, country manager and vice president, Google India, emphasised the importance of trust in the digital ecosystem. "For India's digital engine to keep growing and powering its ambitious future, we must keep building trust in how users and enterprises access the digital landscape," Lobana stated. She added that the GSEC India launch brings Google's global experience, from cutting-edge AI to foundational cybersecurity, to realize this commitment, calling for ecosystem-wide collaboration.
Google plans to implement advanced technologies such as
Gemini Nano
for scam detection, SynthID to watermark AI-generated content, and enhance real-time threat monitoring across Google Pay, Gmail, and Search. The centre also supports
post-quantum cryptography
research in collaboration with IIT-Madras.

Gamblers now bet on AI models like racehorses
Now that AI developers are getting paid like pro athletes, it's fitting that fans are placing big bets on how well they're doing their jobs. On Kalshi, Polymarket and other sites where people wager 'predictions" on real-world events, gamblers lay down millions each month on their picks for AI's top model. The AI arms race is playing out in plain sight on social media, ranking sites and obscure corners of the internet where enthusiasts hunt for clues. The constant buzz makes the topic appealing for wagers, though not every scrap of information is meaningful. Foster McCoy made $10,000 in a few hours in early August by betting against the success of OpenAI's GPT-5 release. The 27-year-old day trader noticed people were misreading an online ranking site that appeared to hype GPT-5, so he put $4,500 on its competitor, Google's Gemini, to be 'Best AI This Month." As more bettors fell in line with his call, he cashed out. That's just another day for McCoy, who has traded $3.2 million on Kalshi since the start of 2025—making $170,000. He's part of a growing contingent of bettors making hundreds of trades a week on AI markets, on a range of wagers such as 'Best AI at the end of 2025," 'AI regulation becomes federal law this year," and 'Will [Chief Executive] Sam Altman be granted an equity stake in OpenAI this year?" Trading volume across AI prediction markets has surged to around $20 million this month. Kalshi, the only platform currently available in the U.S., is seeing 10 times the volume on AI trades compared with the start of the year, a spokesman says. Each bet, or 'contract," is priced in cents to reflect the odds: McCoy bought thousands of Gemini contracts at around 40 cents, meaning it had a 40% chance of winning. If the bet had settled and Gemini won, McCoy's 40 cents would become a dollar. If Gemini lost, McCoy would lose it all. But much of the action happens before the final outcome. As more people piled into the Gemini bet, the contract price rose. McCoy sold when it had reached 87 cents. It's like betting on a sports match, only with the option to cash out when the odds rise in favor of your bet. 'You're just betting against what the other guy knows," says McCoy, who credits his success to 'being chronically online." He trades from home on a triple-monitor setup tuned to the holy trinity of AI betting: X, Discord and LMArena, a leaderboard where people rate AI model performance in blind tests. Social-media beefs can be gold for gamblers. After GPT-5's debut, a flurry of Elon Musk posts claiming the superiority of his xAI Grok chatbot sent the 'Grok to Win" market up more than 500% within hours. Before long, it had fallen nearly all the way back down. Bettors end up down rabbit holes hunting for more obscure tidbits. Harvard undergraduate Rishab Jain often scans X accounts of lesser-known researchers. The day before GPT-5's release, OpenAI's Sam Altman posted an image of the Death Star from 'Star Wars." When a researcher from Google's DeepMind replied with an image of the killer globe under attack, Jain read it as a sign of confidence from Gemini's makers. Jain also scrapes source files from Google's apps and monitors public GitHub repositories tied to its products, looking for back-end changes that might signal a soon-to-be-released Gemini model. 'I'm almost obsessively up-to-date with what's going on in this world," Jain says. 'Google has so many products that need to integrate a new model before it officially launches, and you can see those changes happening in the back end if you know where to look." Since starting in June, he has won $3,500. Strategies vary. Some bet on the big industry players, others buy low on less-known or soon-to-be-updated models. Some compare odds on Kalshi and Polymarket to find arbitrage opportunities in the odds. As volume for these AI trades continues to grow, the incentive for good information will only increase, and the squeeze on casual bettors will get tighter, says Robin Hanson, a professor of economics at George Mason University. 'When you have better information in these kinds of markets, you can make better decisions," Hanson says. 'If you know a little more, you make more money." For now, the markets still draw a mix of sharks like McCoy and Jain along with casual bettors. 'I'm just a dude that likes tech and has some time and money," says James Cole, a 35-year-old who recently shut down a company he founded. Perplexity's $34.5 billion bid for Google's Chrome seems mischievous
If you're fighting an antitrust lawsuit that might end up breaking your company into pieces, one defence is to argue that those pieces would wither away if separated from the mother ship, thus creating a worse outcome for the consumer. That's what Google has been doing in the face of the US Department of Justice (DoJ) calls for it to sell Chrome, its market-leading web browser, as part of the remedies for its monopolistic behaviours involving its search business. As the company wrote on its blog in May, the DoJ's proposal to break off Chrome—which billions of people use for free—would break it and result in a 'shadow of the current Chrome," according to Chrome leader Parisa Tabriz. She added that the browser would likely become 'insecure and obsolete." Also Read: Manu Joseph: Who'd have thought Google could be replaced This defence was complicated somewhat on 12 August when it emerged that Perplexity, an AI company, had made an 'audacious" (Bloomberg), 'longshot" (Wall Street Journal) and 'mischievous" (my term) bid to take Chrome off Google's hands for $34.5 billion. Perplexity doesn't have $34.5 billion. The company was valued at $18 billion at the time of its last funding round, but said it would come up with funds from a coalition of investors who are already on board with the plan. The deal would realistically be possible only if the court does force the Alphabet unit to sell Chrome, which, according to most analysts I've spoken to, would be an extreme measure. But it's not an impossibility. Indeed, it might have become slightly more possible thanks to Perplexity's bid and what might come next. But before I get into that, let's humour this for a second and talk about why buying Chrome would make sense for Perplexity. The web browser has become a critical early battleground for shaping new habits in AI. Perplexity realizes this and recently introduced its own browser, Comet, which places its own AI assistant front and centre: If you type a query into the address bar, Comet will, instead of searching Google, turn to its AI instead. Also Read: Google's ad-tech dominance is easier to fix than its search monopoly At scale, this shift in behaviour from search engine to AI would be profound. The problem is that Comet has a tiny market share compared with Chrome's 70% of desktop browser use globally and 67% on mobile phones. Following loose estimates of about 3.5 billion users of Chrome, Perplexity would be paying about $10 per user. The goal then would be to convert as many of them as possible to users of its $20-a-month 'Pro' AI plan. As AI business models go, it's actually not bad. Unlike its biggest competitors, Perplexity lacks a shop window for its AI, an existing highly-used product where users can discover the functionality of AI without having to consciously go looking for it. Still, the lack of movement in Alphabet's share price on 12 August suggests investors have brushed off the possibility. For starters, some analysts think the valuation is way off. The offer 'vastly undervalues the asset, and should not be taken seriously," according to Baird. A better number, its analysts said, would be more like $100 billion—though it's hard to say how the dynamics of a deal would play out if Google had no choice but to sell Chrome. Previous valuations put it somewhere between $30 billion and $50 billion, a figure that seems a little conservative if the browser is indeed pivotal to building AI market share. Also Read: Google and Meta antitrust cases show why we need a policy pincer to foster competition in digital markets Regardless, what this bid truly represents is a cunning plan to get in the ear of Judge Amit Mehta as he considers the appropriate antitrust remedies for Google's prior bad behaviour. With this move, Perplexity is skewering Google's defence that spinning out Chrome would be fatal to not just Chrome but to Chromium, the open-source project that forms the backbone of most top web browsers, including Google's direct competitors. It can now be sincerely argued that there's a bona fide offer from a company capable of not only taking Chrome out of Google's hands but developing it further—keeping it from becoming 'insecure and obsolete," as the company warned. What's more, it seems likely other AI companies will throw their names into the ring. OpenAI's head of ChatGPT testified during the trial that the company would be interested in buying Chrome, 'as would many other parties." How much of this the judge takes into account is another thing. He probably shouldn't: The rationale to force a sale of Chrome would be to prevent Alphabet from creating a new AI monopoly with the same tactics it used to dominate search. Fine, but Judge Mehta has other tools at his disposal to achieve that more fairly.
