Pelato Offers Italian Fare for Under $20 in Charleston
Charleston has another option for Italian fare with the recent opening of Pelato at 1085 Morrison Drive. Restaurateurs Theresa and Anthony Scotto Jr., along with their son Anthony Scotto III, describe the food as Brooklyn-style Italian. It's the food their ancestors made when they stepped off the boat from Italy and settled in New York in 1905.
The menu is heavy on red-sauce classics like meatballs al forno, chicken Parmigiana, and garlic bread. There's also burnt brocollini, cacio e pepe, and radiatori vodka. The party crowds will be happy to hear frozen espresso martinis are on tap. The best part of the menu? Nothing is over $21 — which is rare in Charleston these days.
The interiors are completely different than the previous tenant — Butcher & Bee. Now there are black-and-white family photos on the wall, green leather banquettes, wood paneling, and a small bar anchoring the back of the restaurant.
The Scottos opened the first Pelato in Nashville. It's popular for Italian comfort foods in a relaxed setting. They decided to open in Charleston because they have family in the area and always visited the Holy City while living in New York and even more frequently when they moved to Nashville.
Pelato is open Sunday through Thursday, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday through Saturday, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

This wildly popular pizza restaurant from Kendall is coming to South Miami
Kendall's favorite pizza spot is planning to pop up in South Miami. Known for its Detroit-style pies with a crispy, airy crust, Vice City Pizza is taking over the restaurant Bar Bella in South Miami for a summer residency. Starting Saturday, June 14, at Bar Bella, you'll be able to order the square-cut pizzas from Chef Carlos Estarita, which are made with Vice City's special two-day fermented dough. You can order a simple square of cheese or sausage, of course, but Vice City is best known for its special pizzas, including the Roni & Hot Honey (pepperoni and Mike's Hot Honey); the Brie and Fig (mozzarella, brie, gorgonzola, caramelized onion, pistachio and fig jam) and the Ron Swanson (bacon, pepperoni, fennel sausage, banana peppers and Mike's Hot Honey), named for everybody's favorite carnivore on the TV series 'Parks and Recreation.' The Bar Bella menu, which featured tapas and barbecue items, will not be available throughout the residency. But the restaurant's back bar Abi Maria, named for owner Jorgie Ramos' old spot in Downtown Dadeland that closed in 2023, is bringing back its bites menu. You'll find choices like cured meats and cheeses, chicken wings and small plates like calamari, truffle tots, Bolognese arancini and proscuitto croquetas. Ramos, who co-owns Vice City Pizza with Estarita and is also the owner of Cebada Rooftop in Coral Gables, opened Bar Bella in late 2024 in the former space of Taco Craft. Now located at 2615 SW 147th Ave., Vice City Pizza came to life as a pandemic pop up (the original Abi Maria was one of the first places the popular pizzas were served). Estarita quickly became known for making all sorts of nontraditional pies, like La Colombiana, with Colombian hot dog slices, homemade pineapple jam, garlic cilantro sauce, bacon and black forest ham or El Cubiche, with caja china pork, confit garlic and onions and mojo aioli. If South Miami is as booming as Ramos believes, Vice City should fit in nicely. 'All the elements of this neighborhood are ready to explode,' Ramos told the Miami Herald earlier this year. 'Going out two blocks from your home and having good food and drinks and not worrying about parking is great. . . . South Miami is what the Grove used to be. It's surrounded by great neighborhoods and people desperate to stay close to home.' The Vice City residency is scheduled to run through September. Vice City Pizza at Bar Bella Where: 5829 SW 73rd St., South Miami Starting: June 14 Hours: 5 p.m. midnight Wednesday-Thursday; 5 p.m.-1 a.m. Friday-Saturday; 5-10 p.m. Sunday; lunch hours on Saturday and Sunday starting in a few weeks More information: @barabimaria on Instagram

Most Followed TikTok Creator in the World Khaby Lame Detained by ICE for Overstaying Visa
Most Followed TikTok Creator in the World Khaby Lame Detained by ICE for Overstaying Visa originally appeared on L.A. Mag. The 25-year-old Senegalese-Italian influencer entered the U.S. on April 30 and departed the country on Friday after being granted a 'voluntary departure' by ICE. According to a statement made to The Guardian by an ICE spokesperson, Lame was held for allegedly overstaying the terms of his visa. Unlike a formal deportation, a voluntary departure allows Lame to return to the U.S. in the future without facing a legal reentry ban. With 162.3 million followers on TikTok, Lame is known for his silent comedy skits, his bio reads 'If u wanna laugh u r in the right place.' In January, he was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Reflecting on his journey, Lame told UNICEF 'from my own experience as a child fearing poverty, struggling to find my passion at school, and losing my job during the COVID-19 pandemic, to finding my place and calling in the world, I know that all children can thrive when they are given a chance and opportunity.' He became an Italian citizen in 2022, during a time of debate within the country over citizenship laws affecting children born in Italy to immigrant parents. As an Italian citizen, Lame was able to be in the U.S. for 90 days before having to apply for a visa. Shortly after arriving in the U.S., Lame appeared at the 2024 Met Gala in New York City as a guest of BOSS. It remains unclear how he spent the remainder of his time in the detainment occurred amid heightened political tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in the U.S. This week alone, ICE conducted multiple raids, prompting widespread protests against the agency and current immigration policies. As of now, Lame has not made any public statements regarding his detainment. His only recent activity online was a photo shared of himself in São Paulo, Brazil released on Monday via Instagram story. This story was originally reported by L.A. Mag on Jun 11, 2025, where it first appeared.

Liuyang Fireworks Make Chinese-Style Romance a Global Sensation
BEIJING, CN / / June 11, 2025 / In Liuyang, central China's Hunan Province, the stories of fireworks have been passed down through generations. As the world's largest production and trade hub for fireworks and firecrackers, Liuyang has a history of making fireworks that dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Liuyang fireworks captivate audiences at many major events, such as 2008 Beijing and 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremonies. Demand overseas is soaring. Consistent quality, diverse products, and stunning effects have earned Liuyang fireworks accolades from international consumers. In 2024, Liuyang's fireworks exports totaled 6.58 billion yuan ($916.3 million), reaching over 100 countries and regions. China accounted for approximately 90 percent of global firework exports that year, nearly 70 percent of them originating from Liuyang. Behind the fireworks are moving stories of Chinese-style romance, some of which embody memories of lost loved ones. The drone and firework show, titled Tears from the Door of Heaven, was recently staged in Liuyang. The inspiration for the show came from Huang Jiayi, a high school student in Liuyang. Her grandfather, Huang Weide, is the founder of Qingtai Fireworks, a local fireworks company. Huang Weide's mother, Huang Jiayi's great grandmother, died at an early age, leaving behind no photographs. To recognize this sadness, Huang Jiayi came up with the idea of making a fireworks display that resembled tears, making them drop through a halo made of drones to express the deep feeling of missing lost family members. Every dazzling fireworks display lies the story of Liuyang's industry upgrade: intelligent technology combined with cultural roots, urban fireworks driving cultural tourism consumption, and creative pyrotechnics igniting global markets. In 2024, Liuyang's fireworks industry achieved a total output value exceeding 50 billion yuan ($7 billion), capturing about 60 percent domestic market share and accounting for approximately 70 percent of national exports. Liuyang has refined "Chinese-style romance" through fireworks, illuminating night skies worldwide and allowing this millennium-old tradition to maintain its enduring charm.
