The unique 'rural oasis' village on the banks of the River Mersey

BBC News19-05-2025

Here in the North West we are fortunate to have incredible countryside, bustling cities, award-winning beaches and not forgetting incredibly friendly northerners. This year I wanted to reflect on the pride we have of our wonderful region and the people that make it such a fantastic place to live.So I came up with BBC North West Tonight's 25 in 25, a series showcasing some of the best people and places in the north-west of England. We've seen some lovely sights, like the rolling hills in east Cheshire and the park with a huge heart in Davyhulme. We've met some wonderful people, like the gang at The Hamlet in Wigan who work tirelessly to ensure young adults with additional needs have as much opportunities as you or I and not forgetting Pete the birdman in Westhoughton who instils calm amidst the chaos of every day.
Earlier in the year I received an email from Malcolm Spargo which began: "I would like to nominate Hale Village near Liverpool as one of a potential location for your upcoming programme series."It caught my eye as, in my mind, Hale is a village in Greater Manchester.A quick glance on the map proved me wrong, how have I not heard of Hale Village in Halton? I booked a crew and off we went.On first glance, how would I describe Hale Village?Picturesque with blooming flowers, green spaces and its beautiful thatched cottages gives the impression that this village remains largely as it was in the mid-20th century.
The cenotaph greets you as you drive into the village and the canon outside the village hall suggests this is in fact a place of rich history. Not what I had in my mind's eye as I drove over on the M56.Malcolm and his wife Pam met me along with Mal Sutton the local historian, Mark Roberts the chairman of the parish council and Bill Webb the local farmer. They proudly showed me their much loved town hall which the village raised money to renovate. There's a real "sense of community, we bring people together", Mark told me.
"We are a team of people and we pay for ourselves through talent nights, bake offs, quiz nights," he said. "People of all ages help keep this place paying for itself."Mal Sutton told me about Hale's most famous son, who, according to folklore, was one of the tallest men in history.Born in 1578, John Middleton, the "Childe of Hale" as he became known, grew to a scarcely believable height of 9ft 3in (2.82m), if his epitaph is to be believed.A 3m-high bronze statue of the Childe of Hale stands proudly in the village across the road from the cottage where he lived.Malcolm told me that as a young boy he believed that the two windows on the side of the cottage were for John's feet to poke out of at night.Famer Bill drove me across his land so we could take in the view of the River Mersey.
Stood amongst tens of thousands of rapeseed flowers we could see Liverpool Airport, Hale Lighthouse, which sits on a sandstone cliff, with the hills of Frodsham and Helsby in the back drop."Hale Village is unique, our late Queen described it as a rural oasis," he said."We are surrounded by industry and urban areas, and we have this little bit of urban England on this peninsula with a lot of history."People that live here are very proud of that and they protect it."As for Malcolm, who nominated Hale Village, for him it's the people that make this oasis unlike any other."The people here are wonderful I've lived in this village now for 49 years, we would never move anywhere else because there's nowhere else that compares with Hale, it really is quite unique," he said. And I for one have to agree.

When the Spice Girls lived together in their modest semi in Maidenhead, before they achieved pop stardom, they would speak endlessly about misogyny in the music industry. Repeatedly told that they wouldn't get on the cover of magazines because 'women don't sell', or being spoken to rudely by male record label bosses, they grew more and more angry. They would, I'm told, spend evenings discussing how they could change the world to make it a better place for women and girls.

Brit pop icon Adele thanks Netflix hit Adolescence for 'changing her relationship with her son' in heartwarming letters

Brit pop star Adele has written letters of thanks to the creators of the Netflix hit series Adolescence. The singer, 37, told director Philip Barantini, 44, that she made a point of watching the hard-hitting crime drama with her 13-year-old son, Angelo. Adele praised the series for 'changing her relationship' with Angelo, whom she shares with ex-husband Simon Konecki, 51. Adolescence, starring Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham, follows the story of a 13-year-old schoolboy accused of murdering a classmate after being radicalised by misogynistic online content. Director Philip said: 'I am getting messages, inundated on Instagram, from people from all over the world who can relate to this story or have really been affected by it. That, for me, has blown my mind a little bit.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Speaking during a masterclass with the Royal Television Society in words obtained by The Sun, he added: 'I had a text message from Steven Spielberg who has watched it twice, and I got letters from Adele last week - handwritten letters from Adele. He continued: 'I mean, just like saying that she had watched it with her son, and it has changed their relationship.' The director added that the show has surpassed their expectations as he gushed about the power of Netflix which has elevated the show to such a level. The four-part series has become Netflix's second most-watched English-language TV show ever, behind only Wednesday, the Addams family spin-off. Since its March 13 debut, Adolescence has racked up 141.2 million views. The series has sparked a national conversation and even prompted Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to suggest it be shown in schools. He revealed that he watched it with his 14-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son, saying: 'As a dad, I have not found it easy viewing.' It comes after Adele made a rare public appearance with her fiancé Rich Paul, 44, at an NBA game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier this year. While Adele and Rich have chosen to keep their relationship largely out of the spotlight, they have frequently been photographed together at sporting events. Adele previously revealed to Rolling Stone that they met through a mutual friend, having both got up to dance to a Drake song at the birthday party. The couple, who have been dating since 2021, announced their engagement in August of last year when Adele flashed her engagement ring. Following a proposal from a fan, Adele admitted: 'I can't marry you, because I'm already getting married.' The romance is Adele's first relationship since she divorced her ex-husband Simon. The couple were married between 2018 and 2021 and are said to have parted on amicable terms after Adele decided to end the relationship. She told British Vogue: 'I wasn't miserable miserable, but I would have been miserable had I not put myself first. 'But, yeah, nothing bad happened or anything like that.' Following Adele's announcement that she and Rich were engaged, she revealed that she would be taking an extended break from music. She has been full of praise for the relationship and said that she would like to have more children. 'Once I am done with all my obligations and all of my shows, I want to have a baby,' she said on stage last May. 'I want a girl because I've already got a boy. I feel like she might be like the person I love the most in the world, but also probably hate the most in the world. 'That is what I feel will happen. She's going to put me in my place all the time, isn't she? With me as her mother and Rich as her father, she's going to be a bossy little queen, isn't she?' Rich, from Ohio, already has three children - Reonna, Richie, and Zane - from a prior relationship.

Jack Fincham and Chloe Brockett 'rekindle romance AGAIN after sixth split' after dropping major hint they were back together

Jack Fincham and Chloe Brockett have reportedly rekindled their romance again after splitting up for the sixth time. The couple last called it quits on their relationship back in April following 'a stressful year' after the Love Island star overturned his jail sentence. Jack, 32, and the former TOWIE star, 24, have had a tumultuous relationship and have been on and off over the years since they first got together in 2019. However now The Sun have revealed the pair are back on after they were spotted shopping together at Swanley Market in Kent. A source told the publication: 'Chloe and Jack have been on and off for months but have finally put their differences aside to give their relationship another chance. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. However now The Sun have revealed the pair are back on after they were spotted shopping together at Swanley Market in Kent (pictured in February) 'They really want to make it work so have been enjoying some lowkey dates as they gradually build the trust. 'They have realised they have something special so want to put their time and energy into making it work.' MailOnline have contacted Jack and Chloe's representatives for comment. Earlier this week they sparked rumours of a reconciliation when they shared snaps on their respective Instagrams from the same East London market. Taking a visit to Columbia Road Flower Market, Jack shared a snap outside the Birdcage pub. Chloe then also posted a snap from the same spot as she posed with a huge bouquet of flowers. The pair previously moved into their first home together back in May 2024 and even created a joint account to share their home updates. However in April Chloe announced she was once again single and wanted to 'focus on myself', as they prepared to move into separate homes. During a Q&A session with her Instagram followers, Chloe was asked if she is still in a relationship. She responded: 'No I'm not in a relationship anymore... just want to focus on myself and the things that make me happy.' When asked if she was moving in with Jack, she explained: 'No I am moving to Brentwood on my own... I can't wait to show you all my little place it's so pretty' They currently live in Romford, but Chloe reportedly 'misses the Essex buzz,' while Jack is hoping to move to Kent. In another Instagram Stories, she added: 'I wanna give myself a cuddle after the last year I've had... only way is up from here'. Jack previously said he doubted his relationship with Chloe was over for good, and it appeared Chloe feels the same. She admitted: 'I'm sure he would like to go back to that time in our relationship, as would I to some extent. 'Obviously I'm focusing on moving out and things going on in my career and Jack is focusing on a lot of things going on in his. 'I wish him well and we'll always be involved in each other's lives to some extent, whether romantically or in a friendship way, but as of right now I'm focusing on myself.' 'I've seen a lot about us slamming each other, I can assure you that is definitely not what is going on. 'Me and Jack have been in each other's lives for a really long time, six nearly seven years now, and we tried living together and it didn't work for multiple reasons, not because of my OnlyFans at all.'
