PM Anwar arrives in Brazil for Brics summit debut, set to champion Asean's priorities
The aircraft carrying Anwar and his delegation landed at the Galeão Air Force Base (BAGL) at 5.41am local time (4.41pm Malaysian time) after a 12-hour flight from Paris where the premier completed his two-day official visit.
Anwar was received by Acting Head of Mission of the Malaysian embassy in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, Datuk Mohammad Ali Selamat; Secretary of Trade Promotion, Science, Technology, Innovation and Culture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Laudemar Gonçalves de Aguiar Neto, and other Brazilian officials.
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, is here at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
He is being accompanied by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz; Minister of Transport Anthony Loke; Miri Member of Parliament Chiew Choon Man; and Paya Besar Member of Parliament Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah.
Malaysia's participation in the 17th Brics Leaders' Summit is in its capacity as Brics Partner Country and Chair of Asean 2025.
The Summit will mark the first gathering of Heads of State and Government from Brics Member and Partner Countries.
Malaysia officially attained Brics Partner Country status on January 1, 2025.
Hours after arriving in the coastal city, Anwar is scheduled to deliver a speech at the Brics Business Forum, alongside the Brazilian president.
On Monday, the Prime Minister will deliver National Statements on 'Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic–Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence' and 'Environment, COP30 and Global Health' sessions.
The intervention reflects Malaysia's steadfast commitment to strengthening multilateralism and amplifying the voice and interests of developing countries.
In its capacity as Chair of Asean 2025, Malaysia will seek to promote stronger engagement between Asean and Brics, with the aim of advancing regional cooperation, deepening economic partnerships, and contributing to collective efforts toward a more equitable and sustainable global economy.
During his three-day stay here, Anwar is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Brics Member and Partner Countries.
He is also expected to engage with Brazilian and Malaysian companies.
The Brics group — which serves as a political and diplomatic coordination forum for countries of the Global South and collaboration across diverse sectors — was initially established by Brazil, Russia, India and China.
It later expanded with the inclusion of South Africa in 2011, followed by Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2023, and Indonesia in 2024.
Malaysia, as well as Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Thailand, Vietnam, Uganda and Uzbekistan, were accepted as Brics partner countries. — Bernama

In a statement today, the investment, trade and industry ministry said Anwar met 40 representatives from France's industrial sector, with several companies expressing intention to invest in high-tech manufacturing, aerospace, renewable energy, tourism and hospitality, digital economy and sustainable infrastructure. 'As for potential exports, RM675 million was generated for high-impact sectors such as aerospace, automotive, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, digital economy, lifestyle and halal industries. 'These are sectors targeted under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) and the Green Investment Strategy,' it said. Miti said several companies also shared their intention to continue investing in Malaysia, driven by key factors such as a conducive, stable and dynamic investment ecosystem; encouraging global demand for Malaysian-made products; efficient domestic supply chains; a highly skilled workforce; and investor-friendly government policies. The delegation included the minister, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, and representatives from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade). Tengku Zafrul said the mission's overall success reflected the foreign companies' continued confidence in Malaysia's investor-friendly policies, supply chain ecosystem, competitiveness and economic growth potential. 'The investment and trade potential to be realised will also provide business opportunities for local companies, including small and medium enterprises, and more high-paying jobs for Malaysians. 'All these are key in driving our economic transformation agenda,' he said.

Zahid rejects solo path for Umno in GE16 despite grassroots sentiment, will contest under BN
LUMUT, July 6 — Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has confirmed that the party will not contest solo in the upcoming 16th General Election (GE16). Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said Umno will remain a component party of Barisan Nasional (BN) for the election. He said Umno has never contested on its own in the past, and dismissed claims that the party's losses in several by-elections were due to its partnership within BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH). '(The suggestion to contest solo) was not only brought up in Kedah — yesterday I was in Johor, and it was the same sentiment, urging us to go solo. 'There are resolutions from some divisions implying that our defeats stem from having allies in BN and PH... that we've been at a disadvantage because we did not contest alone,' he said when opening the 2025 Lumut Umno Division Delegates' Meeting here today. He said Umno will continue to use the dacing (scales) logo (the BN symbol) in GE16 without sidelining its partners such as MIC, MCA, PH, and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS). Also present at the meeting were Perak Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Lumut Umno Division chief Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir. Zaliha denies rumours Tuaran MP appointed Labuan Corp chairman
Federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the government is committed to finding a candidate who will serve the best interest of Labuan's socio-economic development. LABUAN : Federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa has dismissed rumours that Tuaran MP Wilfred Madius Tangau has been appointed as the new chairman of Labuan Corporation. She said no appointment has been made thus far, and that Putrajaya, through the federal territories department, is still evaluating several candidates for the leadership role at Labuan's local authority. 'The rumours and speculation circulating about the Tuaran MP assuming the position are not true. We are carefully scrutinising several potential individuals for the chairman's post,' she said in a statement to Bernama today. Zaliha said the government remains committed to identifying the most suitable candidate who will serve in the best interest of Labuan's socio-economic development. 'We are seriously looking into the right person to lead Labuan Corporation. We want someone capable of driving the island's growth and addressing the needs of the community,' she said. She urged the public to refrain from spreading unfounded claims and speculation, which could mislead and confuse the people of Labuan. The post of Labuan Corp chairman became vacant following former Kimanis MP Anifah Aman concluding his term last month.
