Local organisation demands action against GBV
Helping Hand Foundation mobilised its members to address the rise in gender-based violence and demanded that Mamelodi East police prioritise GBV cases on Thursday.
Together with the community of Mamelodi, they marched from Balebogeng Primary School to hand over a memorandum of grievances at the Mamelodi East police station.
The memorandum was received by Colonel Moses Mokwana of the Visible Policing unit.
Ntombifuthi Gwala from the foundation said it demands change and increased support from the police regarding GBV.
Gwala said the police must prioritise GBV cases and immediately attend to calls from the community regarding GBV.
'There are a lot of cases reported in Mamelodi about issues related to GBV, and therefore we demand more support for GBV survivors and families who have lost their loved ones due to GBV,' said Gwala.
She said the community had been complaining about the police officers who are not taking their job seriously, especially when it comes to GBV cases.
She said the march comes after numerous complaints regarding GBV in the community and victims being afraid to come out in the open about their plight.
The foundation pleaded with the community and victims of GBV to break the silence and start reporting these cases.
She said it is there to help victims come forward with their complaints, and police must take action by protecting the victims.
Among the issues they raised was the need for police to work with the community to implement community-based programmes to prevent GBV, promote awareness and challenge harmful gender stereotypes.
In his response, Mokwana said GBV is taken seriously at the Mamelodi East police station.
Mokwana said, 'We are working closely with the court of law by making sure that the perpetrators of GBV are served with protection orders as soon as possible.
'We always make sure that suspects known to the victims get arrested and make sure they are denied bail,' said Mokwana.
'Gender-based violence and contact crimes are a very big problem in Mamelodi East, hence we have gender-based violence gates which can be used by victims,' he said.
He said the police were committed and would attend to the memorandum.
The police advised the community to work closely with the social crime prevention officers to raise more awareness.
Mokwana added that the station has a victim empowerment office that operates 24 hours.
Gwala added that the foundation will be working together with the South African Police Service to end GBV and would therefore be taking part in programmes arranged by the police in the fight against GBV.
She said Helping Hand Foundation is a student-led organisation that fights inequality and works with those going through poverty.
The foundation has given the police station seven days to respond to its demands.

‘Declare Limpopo a GBV disaster zone'
Thohoyandou police station registered the most number of rapes and sexual offences in the country. Limpopo must be declared a gender-based violence disaster zone, says the ANC Women's League. This is after a large number of contact crimes such as rape, murder and sexual harassment were registered in different police stations across the province in the fourth quarter of 2024/25. The province's Thohoyandou police station has been branded the rape capital of South Africa after it registered the most number of rapes and sexual offences in the country. Despite the fourth quarter crime statistics revealing a decrease in contact crimes, Limpopo recorded 105 cases including murder, assault GBH, rape, robbery and theft. The second biggest political party in the Limpopo provincial legislature, the DA, said Thohoyandou was in the top 30 stations for all contact crimes, where it ranked 15th. The station also appeared in the top 30 stations for various crimes 13 times. 'Thohoyandou is most often against the downward trend of a specific crime category in Limpopo, with increases in assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm [GBH], common assault and common robbery. 'Urgent high-level intervention is required as the SA Police Service (Saps) is losing the battle against crime in Thohoyandou,' DA provincial spokesperson for transport and community safety Marie Helm said. GBV crisis Helm, who doubles up as a member of the Limpopo legislature in Lebowakgomo, said Thohoyandou ranked first nationally for reported sexual offences and rape, Seshego police station 13th and Mankweng 18th in the top 30 stations for sexual offences. She said the per capita chances of being raped in Limpopo was above the national average and was indicative of persistent misguided efforts to instil a lack of zero tolerance for gender-based violence and femicide (GBV+F) in the society, as well as a lack of resources and experienced investigating officers. Provincial deputy speaker for the Limpopo legislature and secretary of the ANC Women's League in the province, Tebogo Mamorobela, pleaded with Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba to declare Limpopo a gender-based violence disaster zone. She said defenceless women and children were abused on a daily basis. Mamorobela added that the level of crime in Limpopo has reached a boiling point and the government and communities must join forces to win the war against it. No place for criminals Transport and community safety MEC Violet Mathye said there was no place for criminals, especially those who prey on defenceless women and children in her government. The MEC was speaking during a visit to the family of slain Ndzalamo Mlondobozi, who died after her live-in lover allegedly ran over her with a car. No arrests have been made and police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said investigations were still underway. 'That is why our government, under the stewardship of our premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba is here today. We are here to provide support and pay our condolences to the family. 'We promise that no one is above the law and we will do everything and anything in our power to ensure that justice is served and that the perpetrator in this case is made to face the law, come high or low water.' On the rape and murder heightened statistics, Matye said Thohoyandou police station was the entry and exit of all African people from the Southern African Development Community countries into South Africa through the Beit Bridge border post. Without revealing the budget, Mathye said funds had been allocated and set aside to build more police stations and satellite police stations in the Vhembe region this financial year. Mourners gather to pay tribute to murdered child, Likhona Fose
Scores of community members of Durban Deep, Roodepoort and anti-GBV organisations came out in their numbers to support the grieving family of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, who was mutilated and killed in the area. Fose, a Grade 8 pupil at Ikusasalethu Secondary School in Braamfischerville, was found dead with her body mutilated in an empty field on Sunday, 1 June 2025, sparking reports of possible muthi and hate crime-related murder. On Thursday, Morero joined scores of mourners, including family, friends, learners from various schools and members of the Johannesburg City Council and MEC for education, Matome Chiloane and other officials who mourned the tragic manner in which the child died. The memorial service held at the Nkone Maruping Primary School in Braamfischerville attracted throngs of sympathisers who decried the scourge of GBVF and other violent crimes against women and children. Next Stay Close ✕ Speaking to the mourners gathered at the Nkone Maruping Primary School, also in Braamfischerville, Morero said those responsible for Fose's death and who deal with body parts of young people will never be rich. "Body parts will not make you rich. We want to tell our people that to get rich they must wake up in the morning and work hard. It is painful to lose a child like this. As the city, we are here to comfort the family. Your child was killed by criminals, and I hope the police will do everything in their power to find the perpetrator so that justice is done," he said. On Wednesday, former Chief of the JMPD, David Tembe, who visited the family indicated that the JMPD and other law enforcement agencies would prioritise police visibility in the area. "This is no longer business as usual. The brutal murder of Likhona Fose has shaken the soul of our city. As the Public Safety leadership, we are declaring war on crime as we will be unleashing every tactical unit on the killers. "We are coming for those who think our children are targets. Johannesburg will not be a playground for criminals. We owe Likhona justice, we owe our people safety and we will deliver, no compromise, no retreat," he stated.
