AJ Brown injury update: Status, latest news on Eagles WR's hamstring
The Philadelphia Eagles are dealing with an injury to one of their key playmakers ahead of the 2025 NFL season. Wide receiver A.J. Brown has been absent from practice while dealing with a hamstring injury. The Eagles have been mum about his status and how much the soft-tissue injury could affect him in the weeks leading up to the team's Sept. 4 season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. Here are the latest updates on Brown as his injury lingers into preseason Week 3. A.J. Brown injury update Brown is not participating in the Eagles' Monday, Aug. 18 practice because of his hamstring injury. However, Brown's absence appears to be precautionary. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports that the Eagles are keeping the veteran receiver sidelined at they "take their time to make sure he doesn't suffer any setbacks." And while Brown wasn't dressed for practice or working out with the receivers, he did take some time to throw to his fellow wide-outs during Monday's session. That's A.J. Coach Nick Sirianni was focused on getting the veteran receiver ready for Week 1 when asked about his status after practice on Thursday, Aug. 14. "Our goal is to get all these guys ready to be firing on all cylinders once the season hits," Sirianni told reporters. "Not gonna get into too much of that stuff. He's working through some things, and he'll be back out there when he can." While Sirianni's comments raised some alarm among Eagles fans, Garafolo reported he didn't "sense any great concern" about the long-term availability of the three-time All-Pro second-teamer. "I just sense that it's a guy that they want to make sure that they have right heading into the season," Garafolo said of Brown in an Aug. 14 appearance on NFL Network. "He's got three weeks to get right. I saw him when I was at the practice. He was moving around on the sideline and certainly engaged. So, A.J. JoAnne Carner, 86, withdraws from U.S. Senior Women's Open after losing too much distance
On his first day as LPGA commissioner, Craig Kessler called 86-year-old JoAnne Carner and asked her two questions: Did she have any recommendations? And was there anything he could do for her? "I said yeah, give me 20 more yards," cracked Carner. This week's U.S. Senior Women's Open won't be the same without Carner in the field. The LPGA legend notified the USGA several weeks ago that she wouldn't be playing, telling Golfweek that her game "fell apart." To be more specific, Carner said she's lost about 30 yards since last year's championship, where she shot 85-80 in blistering heat at Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh. "I just got into some real bad habits," said Carner, a 43-time winner on the LPGA and two-time U.S. Women's Open champion. The USGA recently announced that the champion's medal for the U.S. Women's Amateur would be renamed and redesigned to honor Carner. The five-time U.S. Women's Amateur champion boasts eight USGA championships, the most by any female golfer. The seventh edition of the U.S. Senior Women's Open will be held Aug. 21-24 at San Diego Country Club, where Mickey Wright claimed her fourth U.S. Women's Open title in 1964. Carner hadn't even turned pro by then. She won the LPGA's Rookie of the Year title in 1970 at age 31. Her Women's Open titles came in 1971 and '76. At the inaugural Senior Women's Open in 2018, the timeless Carner hit the first tee shot and shot her age, 79, without the use of a cart. In 2021, she broke the record for the oldest to play a USGA championship at age 82. One of the coolest parts of the championship every year is watching to see if Carner can break her age. She's managed the feat eight times. At last week's Standard Portland Classic, Juli Inkster had a chance to break Carner's record for the oldest to make the cut at an LPGA event. Carner set the record for 64 years, 26 days at the 2004 Chick-fil-A Charity Classic. Inkster, 65, shot 69-74 to miss the weekend in Portland by a single shot. Carner followed along from her south Florida home and rooted for Inkster to one-up her. "I frigging love JoAnne Carner," Inkster told the press as she made her run. Carner will be following the live scoring in San Diego and watching the broadcast over the weekend. The LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famer noted that while she's healthy and still out practicing at home, it's difficult to do so without an immediate goal in mind. Cal Raleigh hits 47th homer, closing in on Salvador Perez's catcher record
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Cal Raleigh autographed a toilet seat for one fan, along with the scores of baseballs and other paraphernalia 'The Big Dumper' signed for shrieking Little Leaguers. Raleigh gave the kids a real treat hours later. The Seattle Mariners slugger socked his 47th homer of the season to boost his major league lead and put him within striking distance of the season homer record for catchers set by Kansas City's Salvador Perez. 'He continues to swing a really hot bat,' Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. 'I don't think I'll ever get tired of that.' Raleigh's two-run shot in the seventh inning sent hundreds of Little Leaguers from around the globe cheering in delight to see one of the brightest stars in the MLB Little League Classic go deep. It didn't help the Mariners much in defeat. The New York Mets beat the Mariners 7-3 and won the last two games of the three-game set. The Mariners are still in the thick of the AL wild-card race and hope to gain ground when they head to Philadelphia for the start of a three-game series. Raleigh could make catching history in Philly. Perez hit 48 homers for the Royals in 2021. 'I think it's been an incredible season for him,' Wilson said. 'But I think we knew what's in there. He's done a great job of bringing it out.' Raleigh put more than his prodigious power on display in the home of youth baseball's biggest weeks of the summer. Raleigh's chest protector featured a baseball card design of Mariners players and coaches from when they were kids. He breezed through the pregame clubhouse in a 'Little Dumper' T-shirt gifted by some of the Little Leaguers. 'You grow up wanting to come here as a kid. Get to do it as an adult now,' Raleigh told MLB Network before the game. 'It's really fun. Excited to meet the kids and hang out.' Raleigh's power always was evident. He hit 27 homers in 2022, 30 in 2023 and 34 last season. Now he's on pace to easily top 50 homers and maybe more. There are only five other players in big league history who have hit at least 40 homers while primarily playing catcher: Perez, Johnny Bench (twice), Roy Campanella, Todd Hundley and Mike Piazza (twice). Bench, Campanella and Piazza are Hall of Famers. 'He's a guy that we knew all along coming up in the minor leagues that he had a pretty high ceiling,' Wilson said. 'What he does behind the plate and what he does now at the plate has been unbelievable. He's carried the weight of both of those things and has done it very well.' A first-time All-Star at age 28, Raleigh burst through on the national scene when he won the All-Star Home Run Derby. He became the first switch-hitter and first catcher to win the title. He's the second Mariners player to take the title after three-time winner Ken Griffey Jr. Raleigh's homer also gave him 102 RBIs this season. He's the first catcher to record back-to-back 100 RBI seasons since Piazza and and the first American League catcher to reach that feat since Thurman Munson. Even more milestones await. Maybe even a playoff berth. 'He's just become a better hitter,' Wilson said.
