Deadline to file ITR extended to September 15 amid systems tweaks

NEW DELHI: The income tax department has extended the deadline for filing of tax returns by individuals from July 31 to Sept 15 in the wake of several amendments to the law, which have necessitated revisions in the notified ITRs for this assessment year, requiring the authorities to rework the technology platform, among other things.
"The notified ITRs for Assessment Year 2025-26 (FY2024-25) have undergone structural and content revisions aimed at simplifying compliance, enhancing transparency, and enabling accurate reporting. These changes have necessitated additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the corresponding utilities. Furthermore, credits arising from TDS statements, due for filing by May 31, 2025, are expected to begin reflecting in early June, limiting the effective window for returns filing in the absence of such extension," the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in a statement.
For the last few years, the tax department has been sticking to the July 31 deadline meant for individuals who do not need to get audits done. The deadline covers the bulk of I-T returns filed during the year. Whenever the deadline has been extended in the past, it has happened quite late in the day. But this time the I-T department has opted to inform taxpayers early.
"Given the requirements of these new ITR forms, the e-filing utility (both online and offline) needs to be updated by govt.

Therefore, it is a very welcome move to extend the ITR filing deadline..., allowing taxpayers the time required to comply with these enhanced reporting requirements and legislative changes," said Sonu Iyer, partner and national leader for People Advisory Services-Tax at consulting firm EY India.
"Given the complexity and increased reporting requirements in the revised ITR forms, including more granular disclosures of capital gains, foreign income, and asset ownership, the extension offers much-needed relief to taxpayers... taxpayers are advised to utilise this extended window to compile their financial data, reconcile necessary information, thereby minimising the risk of filing errors or omissions," said Sandeep Sehgal, tax partner at consulting firm AKM Global.

'Without me, Trump would have lost election': Elon Musk launches all-out attack on US President
After Elon Musk criticised US President Donald Trump's sweeping tax and spending bill, calling it a "disgusting abomination", he launched another brutal attack on him. Elon Musk said that without his support Trump would have lost 2024 Presidential election. This came after Trump said he was very disappointed with Musk. The war of words between Donald Trump and Elon Musk intensified on Thursday, with the Tesla and SpaceX CEO responding bluntly to the US president's criticism over his opposition to Trump's signature economic bill. Remove Ads After Elon Musk's continuous attack on Donald Trump's 'big, beautiful bill', the tech billionaire launched an all-out attack on the US President, saying without his support Trump would have lost the election."Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate," the Tesla CEO said in a post on X. In comment section, he wrote, "Such ingratitude".This comes after US President questioned his relationship with the tech billionaire- indicating their close alliance may be no more. Trump said Thursday he doesn't know if he and Elon Musk will still have "a great relationship" after the former DOGE head has spent days blasting the GOP's spending bill."Elon and I had a great relationship. I don't know if we will anymore,' Trump told reporters in the Oval Office before his bilateral sit-down with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. 'He hasn't said bad about me personally, but I'm sure that'll be next. But I'm very disappointed … I've helped Elon a lot.'The tight relationship between Trump and the Tesla CEO has been fracturing on public display. Asked about Musk's ongoing criticism, Trump said he was "very surprised."The president noted that Musk hasn't said anything "about me that's bad" but added he'd rather the billionaire "criticize me than the bill." Trump argued Musk was upset because "we took the EV mandate," in reference to the electric vehicle tax credit the legislation would kill.'I would have won Pennsylvania regardless of Elon…I'm very disappointed with Elon. He knew this bill better than anyone and he only developed a problem when he found out I would cut the EV mandate… When he left he said the most beautiful things about me, he hasn't said anything bad yet but I'm sure that will be next…I've helped Elon a lot… Elon worked hard at DOGE and I think he misses the place…I think he got out there and he's no longer in this beautiful Oval Office…it's not just Elon, I think when some people leave they miss it so badly they develop a type of TDS…some embrace it and some become hostile," the President war of words between Donald Trump and Elon Musk intensified on Thursday, with the Tesla and SpaceX CEO responding bluntly to the US president's criticism over his opposition to Trump's signature economic bill. 'Whatever,' Musk posted on X. 'Keep the EV/solar incentive cuts in the bill, even though no oil & gas subsidies are touched (very unfair!!), but ditch the MOUNTAIN of DISGUSTING PORK in the bill.'Musk's post followed Trump's remarks from the Oval Office, where he said he was 'very disappointed' in the billionaire. 'I've helped him a lot,' Trump said. 'He knew the inner workings of the bill better than anybody sitting here. He had no problem with it. All of a sudden he had a problem, and he only developed the problem when he found out we're going to cut the EV mandate.'Musk hit back quickly, saying, 'False. This bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!'Musk also ridiculed Trump's description of the legislation as 'big and beautiful,' quipping, 'In all of human history, no bill has ever been both big and beautiful. Everyone knows this! It's either big and ugly or slim and beautiful. Slim and beautiful is the way.'The legislation, Trump's flagship tax and energy reform proposal, slashes incentives for electric vehicles and solar energy—measures Musk has openly criticized. Their public disagreement has sparked speculation that the once-amicable relationship between the two may now be unravelingThe former DOGE head departed the Trump administration in May, and has since bashed the "one big, beautiful bill" as a "disgusting abomination." Since then, Musk has urged his followers on X to call their representatives to "KILL the BILL." Some House Republicans have privately revealed their frustration with Musk, including criticism of his competence in the White House.

L&T launches Green hydrogen portal to aware people of clean energy transition
New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): On the occasion of World Environment Day, a website, 'Discover Green Hydrogen,' was launched by L&T GreenTech. The website focuses on the global clean energy revolution, providing insights, expert analysis, and real-time updates on the rapidly evolving Green Hydrogen industry. Powered by L&T GreenTech, a key division of L&T Energy's Green & Clean Energy Business, the newly launched website reflects L&T's unwavering commitment to sustainability. This website is designed as a collaborative hub where industry experts, practitioners, analysts, and media professionals can converge, contribute, and stay informed. It offers rich, in-depth content on every aspect of green hydrogen and the broader energy transition, empowering stakeholders with the knowledge needed to drive innovation and investment. Green hydrogen is produced through water electrolysis powered exclusively by renewable energy sources like solar and wind. It offers a truly carbon-free fuel alternative. Unlike traditional hydrogen derived from fossil fuels, it emits no greenhouse gases, making it a powerful tool to tackle climate change and a critical driver of the global energy transition. Earlier, the government of India launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission, a move aimed at accelerating commercial-scale production for domestic consumption and positioning India as a leading exporter of green hydrogen. The mission aims to develop 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen production capacity annually by 2030--a transformational step towards a sustainable energy future. However, despite its immense potential, the green hydrogen industry remains nascent, with limited in-depth understanding, even among insiders. This knowledge gap highlights the urgent need for a centralised, authoritative platform that provides comprehensive insights, expert analysis, and real-time updates on this rapidly evolving sector. The ' has been created to fill this critical void. As a global energy leader, L&T has set formidable ESG targets: achieving water neutrality by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2040. Through its climate leadership initiatives, L&T aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 300 tonnes annually, impacting both its own operations and those of its clients. Green hydrogen is at the heart of L&T's clean fuel strategy and is indispensable to fulfilling these ambitious carbon and water neutrality goals. embodies this vision, uniting knowledge, innovation, and action to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen and secure a sustainable energy future for India and the world. This website will empower the entire industry by serving as a centralised, trusted platform--providing critical insights, fostering collaboration, and accelerating informed decision-making. It will help stakeholders navigate the complexities of technology, policy, and market dynamics, ultimately driving faster innovation, investment, and large-scale deployment of green hydrogen solutions across sectors. In doing so, will play a vital role in shaping a cleaner, more sustainable energy landscape for the industry and society at large. (ANI)

Middle-class Indians found themselves at heart of nation's progress in these 11 years: Centre
New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): The Modi government at the Centre, just days away from turning 11, said people's hopes, needs and aspirations have not just been heard, but also acted upon with purpose, as it highlighted several initiatives taken up by the government. In a report released by the Press Information Bureau Research Unit on Thursday, the government said that, from tax relief leaving more money in people's hands to pension schemes that promise security in old age, the last eleven years have seen a steady and sincere effort to make life easier, fairer, and more dignified for Indians. 'The government has cut through red tape, simplified rules and made everyday systems work better. Be it filing taxes, buying a home, commuting to work or affording medicines, things have become simpler and more accessible. These are not scattered changes but a pattern of reforms that speak to the real concerns of ordinary citizens. What stands out is the consistency,' the report's preamble read. Over the past eleven years, the government said it has gone beyond token measures to make a real difference in the lives of the middle class. From lowering income tax rates to simplifying returns, every move, it said, has been aligned with the core idea of letting citizens keep more of what they earn. 'The approach has been clear. Listen to citizens, simplify the system and deliver on promises,' the report card said. The most recent tax reforms, especially those in the Union Budget 2025-26, are a clear sign that the Government has placed its trust in the middle class as a pillar of national growth. It said the effort has been constant and focused, whether raising the income threshold for zero tax, introducing a simplified tax regime, or making return filing easier than ever. A major change was announced in the Union Budget 2025-26: individuals earning up to Rs 12 lakh annually will now pay no income tax, except on special incomes like capital gains. With the standard deduction of Rs 75,000, even those earning Rs 12.75 lakh will pay no tax. These enhanced tax exemptions led to the government giving up nearly Rs 1 lakh crore in revenue. The government has once again lauded itself for making income tax return filings simple. According to the government, the simplification in ITR filing is reflected in the rise of individual ITR filings, which increased from 3.91 crore in 2013-14 to 9.19 crore in 2024-25, a 135 per cent rise. On the inflation management front, the government boasted that the price rise remained under control under the current administration. 'Things began to change from 2014. Over the next eleven years, inflation came under firm control. From 2015-16 to 2024-25, the average rate fell to just 5 per cent. The difference is visible not only in the numbers but in daily life. Stable prices gave families breathing room,' the report read. The report touched upon reform-oriented initiatives such as Unified Pension Scheme, Smart Cities Mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), expansion in metro network, UDAN scheme, Ayushman Bharat, Jan Aushadhi scheme, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, among others.
