Centre committed to invest in Bengal's railway infrastructure: Vaishnaw
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday said the Centre is committed to investing in the railway sector in West Bengal and has significantly increased allocations as part of its broader push to boost connectivity, cargo movement and support micro and small enterprises in the state.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Udyami Sammelan Mela 2025 at the National Library in Kolkata, Vaishnaw said the railway budget for Bengal has seen a sharp rise from around Rs 3,000 crore under the previous regime to around Rs 14,000 crore now.
The minister outlined upcoming projects, including the development of the New Jalpaiguri-Kolkata Rail Corridor to world-class standards, a statement said.
"A master plan has been prepared for new railway lines, Gati Shakti cargo terminals, and the upgradation of the chicken neck corridor to a four-line network," he said, adding that the Sivok-Siliguri-New Mal Junction section will also be linked to the main corridor.
Vaishnaw, the railway minister, said that over the last 11 years, India has added around 35,000 km of new railway tracks, including 5,300 km in 2023-24 alone, while also adding 1,400 locomotives and 35,000 wagons annually to the network.
He emphasised India's need for "economic decolonisation" and simplification of systems to promote ease of doing business.
During the day, the minister flagged off the inaugural Purulia-Bankura-Howrah MEMU train via Masagram and said the Centre's focus is to expand railway coverage besides modernising the sector.
He flagged off the train through video conferencing from Santragachi railway station in the state.
Vaishnaw said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus is to expand railway coverage, modernise railways with technology, infrastructure and amenities and improve passenger experience.
Around 1.2 million railway staffers are tirelessly working towards realising this dream, he said.
The Purulia-Bankura-Howrah MEMU train via Masagram would boost rural, local and regional rail connectivity and passenger convenience, he said.
The service is set to improve daily commute options for thousands of passengers across Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Purulia, Bankura and surrounding districts.
By connecting key junctions in West Bengal, the train will not only ensure faster travel but also facilitate economic activity, he said.
He also said during the 2014-25 period, Kolkata Metro added 41 km to its network, compared to only 28 km between 1972, when the project started, and 2014.
Underlining challenges related to land acquisition and traffic permission for Kolkata Metro and other railway projects, Vaishnaw urged the state government "to rise above other things for the benefit of people".
He referred to such challenges on the Kolkata Metro route at Kidderpore, Chingrighata and Beleghata area and also to the Bishnupur-Tarakeshwar rail route.
Vaishnaw lauded the ongoing development of the Santragachi railway station as an Amrit Bharat station, especially the progress of work in the last one and a half years.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is a long-term plan to improve railway stations across India in a step-by-step manner.
"The station is being modernised as a passenger and environment-friendly facility. It has been designed to handle over 50,000 passengers daily by 2063, in addition to ensuring time-bound train movement," he said.
Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, who also attended the Udyami Sammelan Mela, said the government is working on simplifying the IT Act to match the pace of digital innovation.
He acknowledged the long-pending demand for a permanent circuit bench of the Calcutta High Court in Siliguri, adding that the matter is under active consideration.

Despite rising revenue deficit, Maharashtra govt presents supplementary demands worth Rs 57,609 crore
Despite fears of rising fiscal and revenue deficits, the Maharashtra government tabled supplementary demands of Rs 57,509.71 crore in the Legislative Assembly Monday to allocate funds for various schemes and projects. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who also holds the Finance portfolio, presented these demands on the first day of the three-week Monsoon Session, with an eye on the upcoming civic body polls and infrastructure projects. Supplementary demands refer to the additional funds required for various schemes, programmes, and projects beyond what is allocated in a budget. During the Maharashtra Budget session in March 2025, Pawar tabled supplementary demands worth Rs 6,480.20 crore. The Opposition questioned the move, citing the deteriorating financial condition. 'The state already has a revenue deficit of Rs 45,890 crore. With the additional supplementary demands of Rs 57,609.71 crore, the total revenue deficit will rise above Rs 1 lakh crore. It speaks of financial mismanagement prevalent in the state,' said Nationalist Congress Party (SP) president and MLA Jayant Patil. Out of the total demands, Rs 15,465.13 crore have been allocated to the Urban Development Department, headed by Pawar's fellow Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, ahead of the elections in 29 civic bodies, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The financial arrangement is made to undertake various development works within the jurisdiction of urban local bodies. Further, Rs 11,042.76 crore has been earmarked for various grants as per the recommendations of the 15th Finance Commission. As road contractors across the state intensify their protests against the non-payment of dues worth Rs 80,000 crore, the state government has allocated Rs 9,068.49 crore for the Public Works Department (PWD) to clear the pending dues for carrying out road and bridge works. The government has earmarked Rs 3,228.38 crore for the refund of stamp duty cess collected for Metro projects and other development works by municipal corporations, municipalities, municipal councils, and zilla parishads. Other major allocations – Rs 2,240.82 crore for the state government's contribution towards tunnel construction for metro and other transport infrastructure projects. – Rs 2,182.82 crore as share capital for cooperative sugar factories, which will be used for margin money loans from the National Cooperative Development Corporation. – Rs 2,150 crore to benefit from the Central government's 50-year long-term loan programme. – Rs 2,096.58 crore to various corporations for the completion of incomplete and long-pending irrigation projects. – Rs 2,000 crore for district roads and bridges. – Rs 4,733.11 crore to the Rural Development Department. – Rs 3,798.93 crore to the Social Justice Department to implement ongoing schemes for backward classes and to pay scholarships to eligible students. – Rs 2,835.02 crore for the Cooperation, Marketing, and Textile Department. -Rs 1,300 crore to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) Department to pay scholarships to eligible students. -Rs 1,000 crore for carrying out various development works for the Kumbh Mela in Nashik in 2026.

GST @8: PwC suggests petro-products' inclusion, lowering tax slabs
The GST Council, comprising finance ministers from the Centre and states, should simplify compliance, reduce tax slabs to three, and broaden the base by bringing petroleum products under GST, a PwC India report said on Monday. Goods and Services Tax (GST), launched on July 1, 2017, completes eight years on Monday. GST subsumed about 17 local taxes and 13 cesses into a five-tier structure, simplifying the tax regime. Over the last 8 years, the average monthly GST collection rose from Rs 90,000 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 1.84 lakh crore in 2024-25 (April-March). The collections touched a record high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore in April 2025. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Duong 17-8: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo "GST in India now stands at a critical juncture where aligning with global trade dynamics is essential. The evolving landscape of international trade, coupled with the growing need to attract investments in the manufacturing and global capability centre (GCC) sectors, calls for a GST framework that is agile, investor-friendly, and globally competitive," the PwC report said. Currently, GST is a four-tier tax structure with slabs at 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent. Luxury and demerit goods are taxed at the highest bracket of 28 per cent, while packed food and essential items are at the lowest 5 per cent slab Live Events "A transition from 4-tier to a 3-tier rate structure would reduce interpretational disputes, improve tax certainty and simplify compliance," PwC said. A comprehensive review of GST rate slabs is required to minimise the disparity between the GST rate on inputs as against that on output, especially for sectors such as electronic vehicle, aviation and e-commerce, which face credit accumulations on account of the inverted tax structure, it added. PwC also made a case for levying GST on petroleum products, starting with Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), to remove the cascading effect and cash flow problem of the industry. Petrol, diesel, natural gas and other petroleum products continue to be excluded from the GST regime and remain subject to central excise duty and state VAT. Such products can be brought within the ambit of GST only upon a specific recommendation by the GST Council, comprising finance ministers from states and the Centre. The primary concern, particularly among states, is that subsuming these commodities under GST would lead to a revenue shortfall. "A policy change that includes these items under GST, along with a system to protect state revenues, would simplify the tax structure, ease cash flow issues for businesses, and support the original goals of GST," the report added. In the GST Council meeting held in December 2024, states rejected a proposal to include ATF, or jet fuel, under GST.
