Nationals sign No. 1 overall pick Eli Willits to $8.2 million bonus
The bonus amount is a record for a high-school player. The old mark was the $8.19 million Jackson Holliday received from the Baltimore Orioles in 2022.
Willits, a shortstop who doesn't turn 18 until December, doesn't plan on it taking long to reach the majors.
"I've set a goal to be in the big leagues by the time I'm 20, and that's something I'm really excited to do," Willits said during a news conference. "Hopefully, I get out there and start playing well and that can be something I can accomplish in the next few years."
Willits took batting practice prior to the Nationals' Saturday game against the San Diego Padres. He will travel to West Palm Beach, Fla., on Sunday to begin workouts. No decision has been made on which level he will begin his pro career.
The switch-hitter batted .473 with eight homers, 34 RBIs and 47 steals this season for Fort Cobb-Broxton High in Oklahoma.
Willits is the son of Reggie Willits, who batted .258 with 58 RBIs in 414 games with the Los Angeles Angels from 2006-11.
Willits is the third player to be the No. 1 overall pick for the Nationals since the franchise moved to Washington for the 2005 season. The others were Stephen Strasburg (2009) and Bryce Harper (2010).

People are just realizing hidden detail in Kai Trump's first Instagram post
Kai Trump, the eldest daughter of Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Haydon - and the oldest grandchild of former President Trump - was just 14 when she made her Instagram debut. Her very first post? A photo with her grandfather and Tiger Woods, taken on a sunny day at one of Trump's golf courses and shared on February 23, 2021. 'Wishing Tiger luck and a speedy recovery. Also wishing his family all the best in these incredibly trying times. Get well soon! #goat #tigerwoods,' she captioned the shot, referencing Woods' serious car crash in early 2021. Now four years later, people have been noticing the significance of the post after Kai's mother started dating the golfing legend. Vanessa and Trump Jr divorced in 2018 after 12 years of marriage and since Thanksgiving 2024 Vanessa has been dating Woods. Sharp-eyed fans have been commenting on Kai's first post with one writing: 'Ironic this is her first post when he's now dating her mom.' Now 18, Kai has made a name for herself in golf. A senior at The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach, Florida, she committed to the University of Miami last year and is poised to become a star in one of the country's top golf programs. She's also one of the most-followed student-athletes online, with a growing fanbase thanks to her YouTube channel and golf content. Last fall, she played against popular golf creator Garrett Clark and regularly shares behind-the-scenes vlogs. Her popularity has paid off. She recently landed a major NIL deal with Accelerator Active Energy, joining stars like Livvy Dunne and Travis Kelce. Her announcement video - complete with a mock presidential speech - showcased her signature humor: 'My fellow Americans and content creators. After months of reflection, I made a decision. I'll be running - no, stepping - into a new role. 'One with great responsibilities and 100 per cent natural caffeine. I've partnered with Accelerator!' Speaking to Fox, Kai said the 'organic' partnership was a natural fit: 'I love energy drinks… I don't eat a lot of sugar, because I get a little jittery and I crash and with accelerator there is no sugar and I don't crash at all.' She reportedly holds a $1.2 million NIL valuation and is now part of a brand lineup that includes Dunne - who launched her own cotton candy flavor in April - and Super Bowl champ Kelce. Kai is the eldest of Don Jr. and Vanessa's five children. Her younger siblings include Donny, 16, Tristan, 13, Spencer, 12, and Chloe, the youngest. Kai has previously spoken about how her grandfather has pushed her to be a better golfer. 'He taught me to just keep on working at it, and, honestly, I've gotten a lot better in past years with golf, but, he really just [taught me to keep] trying to keep on fighting and keep on practicing and whatnot,' she told 'Fox & Friends' last month. 'And I love playing golf… it's something that we share, a special bond together.' The high school student also spoke about the difficulties in having such famous relatives. 'I mean, it's a lot to handle sometimes with the public eye and also being a high school student and just like a normal kid,' she said. 'But honestly I wouldn't trade it for anything. I'm very lucky and grateful for the opportunity I have to meet all these people and meet world leaders. 'I'm very thankful and just lucky to have this opportunity.'

Lionel Messi exits Inter Miami match v Necaxa with injury: ‘He did feel a pull'
Lionel Messi exited Inter Miami's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa on Saturday night after suffering an apparent hamstring injury in the opening minutes. After the match that Inter Miami won in a penalty shootout, coach Javier Mascherano indicated that Messi would undergo testing on Sunday to determine the severity of the injury. 'He felt discomfort,' Mascherano said through an interpreter. 'We will not be able to know until tomorrow how severe the injury is. There's probably something there. He was not in pain, but he did feel a pull.' Messi was injured around the eighth minute when he fell while being challenged by a pair of defenders near the penalty area. He fell to the ground and slammed his fist in frustration before walking toward midfield as play continued. He walked slowly toward the Inter Miami bench before sitting down on the pitch. Trainers came out and worked on his right upper thigh area for a couple of minutes before he subbed out for Federico Redondo in the 11th and immediately walked to the locker room. Messi has dealt with numerous hamstring injuries throughout his career and has missed time over the past couple of seasons dealing with various leg injuries — the most recent issue was with his left adductor, which sidelined him for a pair of Argentina's World Cup qualifiers earlier this year. The injury puts his status for Inter Miami's next Leagues Cup match in jeopardy. The Herons take on Pumas UNAM on Wednesday. Mascherano has been tasked with managing Messi's packed workload all season. The 38-year-old star was experiencing fatigue late last month and skipped the MLS All-Star game, which led to a one-match suspension by the league for violating its rules on participation in the exhibition match. Sign up to Soccer with Jonathan Wilson Jonathan Wilson brings expert analysis on the biggest stories from European soccer after newsletter promotion Messi was unavailable for Inter Miami's match against Cincinnati on 26 July, which allowed him a bit of rest. 'He is someone who would rather play than rest,' Mascherano said on Friday, adding that Messi would tell the team if he is experiencing fatigue. 'Clearly, we talk about the situation and we manage it,' he said. 'But it has to be a conversation with the player. They know where they can push their body and up to which point they can't. Leo is a special case. . … Perhaps if you make him rest, he feels worse. If we see a red flag or a risk, we aim to speak to the players.'

Fears emerge that Donald Trump could jeopardize NFL's blockbuster deal with ESPN
There are fears that Donald Trump could block the NFL's multi-billion-dollar deal with ESPN, according to reports. Earlier this month, the NFL and ESPN agreed a blockbuster deal that will see the network broadcast seven more regular-season games, and have access to NFL Network and RedZone. In return, it is reported that the NFL will receive equity in ESPN. The shock announcement, first reported by The Athletic, angered many football fans. But now Front Office Sports reports that Trump could intervene in the deal, which is expected to require sign-off from the government. There is reportedly 'growing concern' that the president could try to 'delay, or block' the billion-dollar agreement. Trump has a history of involving himself in sports - particularly the NFL. Only recently, he has been a vocal critic of the new kickoff rules and recently threatened to disrupt the Commanders' new stadium plans if Washington didn't change their name back to the Redskins. A decade ago, he tried and failed to buy the Buffalo Bills for $1billion. In 2017, meanwhile, he called on NFL owners to fire players who take a knee during the national anthem. Colin Kaepernick sparked a nationwide debate when he protested against police brutality and racial injustice. Other players followed suit and they soon incurred the wrath of the White House. 'Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, "Get that son of a b**** off the field right now?" Out. He's fired. He's FIRED!' Trump said during a rally in Alabama. A year later, the president canceled the traditional White House reception with the Super Bowl winners after it emerged that only a small number of Eagles players planned to attend. Trump claimed Philadelphia disagreed 'with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.' The president has also had feuds with ESPN and its parent company Disney. 'ESPN is paying a really big price for its politics (and bad programming). People are dumping it in RECORD numbers. Apologize for untruth!' he said in 2017.
