Over 109,000 People Receive Monthly Pensions in Bahrain, Says Latest Report

Daily Tribune02-07-2025
A new report by the Social Insurance Organization (SIO) has revealed that a total of 109,885 individuals in Bahrain are receiving monthly pension payments, as of the first quarter of 2025.
According to the report, 84,862 are living retirees — making up 77% of the total — while the remaining 25,023 beneficiaries (23%) are family members of deceased retirees, including widows, orphans, and other eligible relatives.
Public vs. Private Sector Retirees
The report highlighted that the private sector accounts for the majority of retirees, with 48,254 individuals (57%). In contrast, the public sector has 36,608 retirees.
Despite the smaller number of retirees in the public sector, they receive higher pensions on average. The average monthly pension for public sector retirees is BD 1,046, which is 59% higher than the BD 657 average for private sector retirees. Overall, the average pension for living retirees across both sectors is BD 825.
25,000 Family Members Receiving Pensions
In addition to the retirees, the report revealed that 25,023 family members of deceased retirees — including children, spouses, parents, siblings, and grandchildren — receive monthly pensions.
Among them:
Children make up the largest group with 11,746 beneficiaries (47%), receiving an average of BD 337.
Widows account for 10,345 beneficiaries (41%), with an average pension of BD 471.
Other relatives (parents, siblings, grandchildren) make up 12% (2,932 people), with an average pension of BD 192.
Age and Gender Breakdown
The largest segment of retirees (30%) falls within the 60–69 age range, followed closely by the 50–59 group (29%), and the 40–49 group (24%) — indicating a steady flow of recent or near-retirement-age individuals entering the pension system.
The gender distribution shows that men dominate in the private sector, comprising 67% of retirees, compared to 33% women. In the public sector, the gap is smaller, with 58% male and 42% female retirees. This reflects broader trends in workforce participation, years of service, and pre-retirement wages.
Pension Ranges
The report also noted that:
26% of retirees receive pensions above BD 1,000,
24% receive between BD 200 and BD 399, and
Another 26% fall in the BD 400–599 range.
This detailed data provides a clear picture of the demographics and economic support structure of Bahrain's retirement community, highlighting differences in sectoral benefits, gender participation, and generational transitions within the pension system.

Bread Wasted, Money Lost: Bahrain's Hidden Subsidy Crisis

Every discarded loaf is not just food—it's public money slipping through our fingers. Government support for flour in Bahrain is no longer just numbers on a page—it's a warning signal. Last year alone, flour subsidies jumped 18.1% to BD 30.4 million, highlighting a growing challenge for both the state and society. Much of this surge stems from global factors beyond our control: soaring wheat prices, climate change, the Russia–Ukraine war, and rising shipping costs. But what we can control is domestic consumption and how subsidies are managed locally. The real issue lies in the silent waste that occurs across production, distribution, and everyday use. Bread is routinely discarded in homes, restaurants, and hotels—a direct drain on public funds meant to ensure affordable staple food. The solution is not more subsidies, but greater awareness. Consumers must realize that wasted bread equals wasted public money—funds that could have supported health, education, or other vital services. Meanwhile, the government must pair price support with strict regulations and oversight to prevent misuse of subsidized flour. This problem is no longer tolerable. Waste is no longer a private habit—it is a public offense. Every dinar lost to discarded bread undermines Bahrain's future and food security. We face a stark choice: act decisively through awareness, regulation, and accountability—or prepare for an even heavier bill that will inevitably fall on citizens.

Fifth Minor Criminal Court Acquits Asian Employee of Embezzlement Charges

TDT | Manama The Fifth Minor Criminal Court has acquitted a woman in her forties, an Asian employee, of charges of embezzling funds from a company managing a chain of restaurants. The defendant was represented by lawyer Reem Al-Mahari, who argued that the case was maliciously filed by the company, which accused the employee of misappropriating company funds. Al-Mahari explained that her client worked in an administrative role, which included receiving checks to cover routine expenses such as workers' and employees' payments, transfers to the Labour Market Regulatory Authority, social insurance contributions, and petty cash. She submitted evidence showing that the funds in question had indeed been transferred to the relevant authorities. She also presented a labor court judgment indicating an unresolved dispute in which the company had withheld the employee's labor rights. The Public Prosecution had charged the defendant with embezzling BD 1,420 between 2023 and 2024, in Muharraq Governorate, alleging she misappropriated cash belonging to the company that was under her custody by virtue of her job. The accusation was based on an accounting report submitted by the complainant, in addition to his statements. However, the court ruled that the evidence presented was insufficient to prove the charges. It noted that the case documents lacked reliable proof linking the defendant to the alleged crime, and that the accounting report did not conclusively establish embezzlement. The expert's findings only confirmed that the defendant had issued seven checks totaling BD 1,420, without proving any wrongdoing. The court further observed that the existence of labor disputes between the defendant and the complainant company added weight to the possibility of malicious intent behind the case. Based on Article 255 of the Criminal Procedure Law No. 46 of 2002, the court concluded that the charges were unsubstantiated and ruled to acquit the defendant.
