Deb Haaland ‘preparing' to run for New Mexico governor
Former U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland is 'preparing' to run for governor of New Mexico in 2026, a campaign spokesperson confirmed to Source NM on Tuesday.
If elected, Haaland would be the first Native American person to head the state government in its 113-year history. President Joe Biden in December 2020 tapped Haaland to become the first Native American ever to be a cabinet secretary. She previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives for the state's 1st Congressional District.
'Deb Haaland is of and for New Mexico,' the spokesperson said in a statement. 'She's a proven leader; she's created New Mexico jobs, brings people together, and is getting ready to run to be New Mexico's next governor. She and her team will be focused on listening and solutions that fit the needs of our communities.'
Haaland, 64, is a member of Laguna Pueblo, one of the 23 tribes located in what is now called New Mexico, which became a state millenia after Pueblo, Navajo, Apache and Ute peoples started living here. During her time in the Interior, she played a role in elevating Indian Country onto the national stage in U.S. politics, including commissioning the federal government's first-ever accounting for its role in operating boarding schools to forcibly assimilate Indigenous children.
She appeared recently at The People's March in Albuquerque, where she lambasted President Donald Trump and said, 'Our fight is not over. We will need to do the hard work of getting important things done and pushing back against an administration who couldn't care less about regular people, about people like us. We will need to unapologetically stand up to make change to ensure that your voices are heard. We need more people with real lived experiences elected to office and serving our communities as doctors, scientists, CEOs, so that solutions reflect who we are.'
U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) had also been a rumored contender to succeed Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, but announced last week he will not seek the office, saying the 'stakes are simply too high' for him to leave his post in Washington, D.C.

The Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate have headquarters in northeast South Dakota, with a small portion of the Lake Traverse Reservation in southeast North Dakota. A series of meetings took place at the Dakota Magic Casino near Hankinson. North Dakota and tribal officials discussed issues such as gambling, health care and tribal tourism. Rep. Dawson Holle, R-Mandan, chair of the North Dakota Legislature's Tribal and State Relations Committee, said the committee 'is setting the tone that we want to be in conversation with our tribal leaders.' The Legislature first invited the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate to be part of the North Dakota Indian Affairs Commission in 2007, said Sen. Tim Mathern, D-Fargo, vice chair of the committee. Tuesday was the first time the legislative committee had met on the Lake Traverse Reservation, Mathern said. 'Your presence here today demonstrates respect for our people,' Sisseton-Wahpeton Chair J. Garret Renville told the committee. Tuesday was the first meeting of the committee for the 2025-27 interim. Holle said the group plans to meet at each of the five tribal nations that share geography with North Dakota. The committee will meet next in September on the Fort Berthold Reservation with the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation. Gov. Kelly Armstrong and other state officials participated in separate meetings with tribal leaders Tuesday. Armstrong met last month with officials from the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and earlier this year with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The North Dakota Indian Affairs Commission is facilitating visits by the governor to strengthen relationships with the tribes, according to the Governor's Office. Interior Department unveils Alaska, Gulf oil drilling lease timeline
The U.S. Department of the Interior on Tuesday unveiled its long-term schedule for new Alaskan and Gulf of Mexico (renamed to the Gulf of America by President Donald Trump by executive order) offshore oil and gas leases that are part of Trump's recently signed legislation called the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act.' The first sale on Dec. 10 will be the start of a minimum of 30 by March 2040 for the Gulf and six sales by 2032 for Alaska's Cook Inlet along Alaska's south-central coast near Anchorage. On Tuesday, U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the Trump administration was putting in place what he characterized as a 'bold, long-term program that strengthens American energy dominance.' The so-called 'Big Beautiful Bill' legislation was unanimously rejected by Democrats. Data by October 2022 showed the Gulf produced about 1.7 million barrels of oil per day compared to the 12 million bpd for the entire country. Burgum added that with Interior's 'predictable sale schedule,' a goal is to create 'good-paying jobs and ensure we continue to responsibly develop our offshore resources,' he said in a statement. The administration said Alaska plays a 'vital' role in America's energy future and argued sales will provide 'much-needed clarity' in pursuit of 'continued investment in deepwater infrastructure.' It added that oil drilling in the Gulf supports 'hundreds of thousands' of jobs, contributes tens of billions of dollars to the nation's annual gross domestic product and generates 'substantial' federal and state tax revenue. The Interior Department claimed the economic and energy-security gains from the sales were 'both immediate and long-lasting.' 'Every year, oil, gas, and mineral activity on public lands brings in billions through lease sales, rent and royalties,' the department argued Tuesday on social media. It said those revenues support schools, roads, conservation projects and 'essential public services in communities across the country.' The White House announced in June a plan to open nearly 82% of the fragile Alaskan landscape to oil and gas development, including some of its most ecologically sensitive areas. According to the department, the Gulf accounts for roughly 14-15% of U.S. crude oil production and serves as the 'linchpin' of offshore energy output. Interior officials added in the news release that the inclusion of at least 30 finalized lease sales in the Gulf underscored what they characterized as the region's 'indispensable role in America's energy ecosystem.' It added that Cook Inlet along Alaska's south-central coast was 'at the center' of perceived economic opportunity. 'Alaska's unique position as both a strategic energy hub and a gateway to the Arctic makes it essential to U.S. energy security,' according to U.S. Interior officials. Alaska was at the forefront of Trump's brief meeting last week in that state with Russian President Vladimir Putin when the two men discussed Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine.
