Coronation Street's Kevin Kennedy looks back: ‘I collapsed after going two days without alcohol. I knew I'd die if I carried on'

The Guardian01-03-2025

Born in 1961 in Wythenshawe, Manchester, Kevin Kennedy is best known for playing Norman 'Curly' Watts on ITV soap opera Coronation Street. The Manchester Polytechnic graduate portrayed the supermarket worker from 1983 to 2003, as well as sustaining a career in music as a solo artist and in bands. He has appeared in musicals including We Will Rock You and Rock of Ages, and stars in Punk Off – The Sounds of Punk and New Wave, which tours until 7 March.
That Barbour jacket and I have been through a lot together. Being Curly was always comforting, like putting on a pair of slippers you've worn for years.
This photo reminds me of a time when everything felt brand new. In any picture taken of me in Coronation Street before 1998, I would have been in active addiction. It all changed when I collapsed after going two days without alcohol. That incident scared the hell out of me, and I knew I would die if I carried on. I needed to change, and it had to be dramatic. The outcome would have been dramatic, otherwise.
By 2002, I'd been sober for four years. The man in this photo was very much coming to terms with what was in front of him – I was up for everything and scared of everything at the same time. I remember feeling completely insane, but in a really good way: my insanity had been channelled into positivity. This absolute belief that I could do anything.
For example, I had just signed to Simon Cowell's label. It was before he was involved in The X Factor, when he was just the head of BMG. I had decided I wanted to play more music and sent a demo to him, and he liked it. He didn't know who I was as it was under a pseudonym, just to avoid any 'soapism'. When we finally met he said, 'Oh wait, it's you!' But it didn't turn him off. I'd be filming an episode of Coronation Street on a Friday afternoon and by the evening I'd be in Memphis, playing on Beale Street, or in Arkansas at a country music festival. Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson would be headlining, and barely visible at the bottom of the poster was my name.
It was an exciting time, but as I was sober I was feeling everything for the first time in a long while. That included fear and uncertainty. As if I had stage fright of the whole world.
Another change was on its way, too: when this photo was taken my role in Coronation Street was coming to a natural end. That sort of news would usually send an actor into a spiral of depression but my glass was half-full. Plus my wife and I had just found out we were expecting our first child. It felt as if everything was happening at once.
Growing up in Manchester at the time of punk gave me the confidence to believe that anything was possible. I was never brave enough to go full punk, with the hair and clothes, but it was the mindset that I loved: that you could do whatever you wanted if you just got up off your arse. I'd turn on Granada News at 6pm and see my peers, people that I knew from the area, becoming actors, writers, poets, sculptors or politicians. Punk was a galvanising force, and for me that manifested itself at the age of 14, sitting in a bedroom with Johnny Marr.
Along with [the Smiths bassist] Andy Rourke, we were in a band called Paris Valentinos. As soon as I heard Johnny play the guitar, I thought: this is special, what a privilege to be here for this. Fast-forward to when I was 19. I was in Hamlet at Sheffield Crucible, and at the hall nearby the Smiths were playing. It was surreal to think a few years before, Johnny and I had been putting tunes together for a local gig for the Queen's jubilee. We'd perform with just one amp and one mic, and the stage was a kitchen table. It was punk, and that was all we needed.
I was never shy growing up, but my creativity definitely needed channelling. I knew I wanted to be in the entertainment industry. However, when you go to see your career officer in Wythenshawe and say, 'I want to be an actor', they look at you like your head's come off. Regardless, I applied to drama school and I got in.
I was 22 when I auditioned for Curly Watts. I'd been in the West End of London when the producers first started sniffing around. This went on and on. Eventually they asked me to go for an audition. I got a train up to Manchester, read for the part on Sunday, and started work on Monday.

The most attractive thing about joining the cast of Coronation Street was that I didn't have to pay for my digs. I could stay at my mum's house in Manchester and get the washing done. It was two weeks' filming but I'd get a week off in the middle, so I could go and sign on. The fame never crossed my mind – it was just a home gig and I was happy I was doing it. It wasn't until the episodes went out that I realised how powerful that show was, and still is. Walking down the street and having people turn and look took some adjusting to.
On the outside everything in my life looked amazing: I had a great job, I drove a nice car, I lived in a nice house. Meanwhile, my personal life was in turmoil. I was a swan on top, but underneath the water was chaos. When I stepped into Norman's shoes there was a bit of respite. I think a lot of actors feel like that, irrespective of addiction. Acting is their safe place, because they don't have to be themselves.
At first I really enjoyed drinking, but quite quickly I became dependent on alcohol. It was self-medication. I don't blame the booze; it could have been anything. There was nothing sinister from my childhood, or the rest of life, that triggered the addiction. I just liked it. I liked the feeling and the escape. In my head I became a better dancer, funnier, more handsome. Fame was never the reason for drinking. I think it would have happened whatever my job was. But I suddenly had the funds to enable myself and speed up the process. It also sped up the recovery, for which I am very grateful.
Sometimes I look at other people my age and think, 'It must be horrible being that old.' I still run around the stage like a lunatic. An hour later my 63-year-old body reminds me that I am no longer 19. But I don't care. I hope I never stop playing. Right now I'm living on a tour bus, a rock'n'roll sleeper with a 'no poo' toilet. It doesn't sound romantic but it's that element of the job that attracted me to theatre in the first place – going from venue to venue, town to town, one step ahead of the law, breaking hearts as you go. I'm not breaking hearts and I'm not one step ahead of the law, but the spirit is the same.
This picture marked the start of a new stage of my life. It's a quizzical look, as if I'm asking, what's going to happen to me now? I've got a child on the way. I'm losing the job that has looked after me for 20 years. Why am I not depressed? I am completely terrified, but also – how exciting.

New Love Island star exits ITV show after bosses learn of past arrest

One Love Island star has left the ITV villa after bosses learned of his past arrest. The star, who was released with no further action, said he 'fully cooperated with the police investigation' A new Love Island star was recently removed from the line-up of the upcoming series after bosses learned of his past arrest. Kyle Ashman, who was due to take part in the dating series airing this month, is no longer entering the Spanish villa following news of his recent arrest coming to light. Earlier this year, the 23-year-old water operative was arrested and quizzed by police with another person over an attack in Stafford, which Kyle said he had no involvement in a recent statement. After being quizzed by police, he was released with no further action. ‌ Speaking on his exit, Kyle said: "I fully cooperated with this police investigation and made it very clear that I had no involvement in this incident. I am not a violent person and any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation." ‌ ITV also released a statement on his departure saying: "For personal reasons, Kyle will not be entering the Love Island Villa as planned. Staffordshire Police had previously said: 'We were called to a social club on Riverway, Stafford, at 7.40pm on Friday, February 28 following reports that someone had been glassed outside and a fight was taking place. Some of the men involved were wearing masks and were carrying weapons. 'Two men went to hospital after suffering injuries at the scene. Both have since been discharged. A man and a woman suffered minor injuries at the scene but did not want any medical treatment. 'Officers have reviewed CCTV footage and have been actively carrying out enquiries to find out more about what happened. A 22-year-old man, from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of wounding and affray. Another man, also 22 and from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of affray. ‌ 'Both were questioned in custody and bailed with conditions while our enquiries continue.' The police later confirmed both suspects were released with no further action last month. Meanwhile, when Kyle was meant to enter the villa, he shared his expectations from the show and shared how he flirted with women. ‌ He said: "I just go with it, find something to compliment a girl on and go from there." The star went on to say he was looking for "someone that's fun, confident and just themselves".

Love Island star's SHOCK EXIT as they leave the villa ahead of upcoming series after citing 'personal reasons'

Love Island star Kyle Ashman has left the show ahead of the launch episode next Monday. ITV have confirmed the 23-year-old from Stafford has chosen not to enter the villa and has decided to leave the show for personal reasons. It comes amid The Sun's reports that Kyle was involved in an machete attack in February when masked thugs stormed a wake and hacked at a dad with a blade. Kyle was one of two arrested by police but he was released with no further action and he has now confirmed he had no involvement in the incident, but has chosen to leave the ITV show regardless. Kyle told MailOnline: 'I fully cooperated with this police investigation and made it very clear that I had no involvement in this incident. 'I am not a violent person and any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation.' Meanwhile ITV added: 'For personal reasons, Kyle will not be entering the Love Island Villa as planned.' The Love Island line up was announced on Tuesday so Kyle's departure will have plunged the show into chaos ahead of Monday's launch episode. The Sun have revealed they alerted bosses on Kyle being questioned in the attack but ITV said they were unaware of the incident and he was not flagged during the contestant checks. The incident on February 28 saw the victim, 38, nearly lose his arm after he was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment and kept it for around two weeks. Another mourner was reportedly glassed, one hit with a metal pole, and two people were run over by a car during the 15 minute attack at the The White Eagle Club in Stafford. Sources said the victim was attacked by three balaclava-clad thugs over an alleged £3,000 debt. He was injured by a blade that left him with a deep gash and has suffered tendon damage and is now unable to drive. Police confirmed yesterday that after the matter had been investigated Kyle and another individual were released with no further action only last month. The incident on February 28 at The White Eagle Club in Stafford saw the victim, 38, nearly lose his arm after he was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment A show source told the publication: 'ITV were entirely unaware of Kyle's past and, as he was not charged, it was not flagged as part of Love Island's stringent DBS checks. 'It's only right he can now return home to the UK to share his side of the story and therefore bosses took the decision that it was best for him not to enter the villa.' Staffordshire Police said on Monday: 'A 22-year-old man, from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of wounding and affray. Another man, also 22 and from Stafford, was arrested on suspicion of affray. 'Both were questioned in custody and bailed with conditions while our enquiries continue.' Kyle, who works as a water operative, doesn't have a strong social media presence with just one Insta pic on his profile. Prior to his announced departure, Kyle said he was looking for 'someone that's fun, confident and just themselves'.

LOVE Island beauty Sophie Lee's TV star ex has been left devastated after she was revealed in the villa line-up. "He was gutted because he feels like there is still unfinished business between the two of them. "While they aren't dating anymore, he thinks she's an amazing girl and they ended on good terms. "It's weird for anyone though knowing your ex is about to go on Love Island and could fall for someone else on TV.' Ouzy, 30, was totally smitten with Sophie back in 2023 at the start of their fledgling romance. He accompanied her to the Beauty Awards where she won Beauty Influencer of the Year. Ouzy told us on the red carpet: "It's going really well," prompting Sophie to chime in: "He's really kind, that's my favourite thing about him." The former villa hunk then gushed: "She's inspirational. We've been dating for a few months." When asked if they were in love, they giggled and replied: "We'll see." Sophie overcame a near-death experience in her early 20s. Ten Years of Love Island The dancer, from Manchester, was performing with flaming props when the freak accident on stage in Chicago left her fighting for her life. The air-con in the venue was too powerful and blasted a fireball back at her, causing her face and chest to 'go up in flames'. Sophie told Fabulous Digital: 'The air-con was too strong so when I blew the fire out it blew back to me. It set me on fire. I just remember being in so much pain, I blacked out for a little bit. It's crazy. 'It happened in front of everyone and I had to get on with it as professionally and quickly as I could. As soon as I got into the ambulance, I was in bits." Sophie spent a month in intensive care in America by herself, while receiving treatment for the burns. 4 The former couple at the 2023 Beauty Awards Credit: Instagram 4 Sophie is a dancer from Manchester Credit: instagram/sophirelee
