
Scientists want to send tiny, solar-powered spacecraft to Mars
The small devices are able to float in the air and could carry sensing instruments to monitor our climate as well as explore Mars, the researchers behind them suggest.
Unlike conventional spacecraft, they do not need fuel to stay floating in the atmosphere. Instead, they use energy from light, through a process known as photophoresis that has been used to make objects levitate for 150 years.
Despite that long history, the practical use of photophoresis has been limited to truly tiny objects or very powerful artificial light, and practical devices have not worked out. Now, however, researchers believe that they have made a centimetre-long flying device out of perforated sheets that can use natural sunlight to stay afloat.
The flying structure is made from two thin, perforated membranes that are attached together by tiny supports. They can be used to create a tiny disc that is then able to leveitate.
They could be sent up to the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere. If they can be scaled up slightly, they would be able to carry antennae and circuits that would allow them to be used to monitor the atmosphere and for other science work.
Eventually, the same design could be taken to other planets, they suggest. It is currently almost prohibitively expensive to send satellites to Mars, for instance – but doing so with the tiny spacecraft could allow researchers to monitor conditions on that planet, they say.
'If the full potential of this technology can be realized, swarms or arrays of such photophoretic flyers could be collecting high-resolution data on the temperature, pressure, chemical composition and wind dynamics of the mesosphere within the next decade,' Igor Bargatin from Penn University wrote in an article accompanying the new research.

Now research suggests that women use exclamation marks more than men – who believe the punctuation to be feminine and emotional. Users of exclamation marks were also seen as being warmer, more enthusiastic and emotional but low in power and analytical thinking, the study found. Researchers at Pennsylvania State University studied 1,100 men and women to evaluate how they use exclamation marks in emails, text messages and group chats, and the reasons for their use. In one of five experiments, 61 per cent of people believed the writer was female when the sender used exclamation marks, compared to 21 per cent who did not think it was a woman. A second test found that men were around 25 per cent less likely to use exclamation marks, while another found that women were 30 per cent more likely than men to use them in texts. Senders who used exclamation marks were seen as around 20 per cent warmer than those who did not. The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, said: 'Women may use exclamation points more than men because they more strongly believe it is expected of them, and men may hold back because they believe such behaviour is seen as feminine.' It added: 'Intriguingly, women thought more strongly than men that exclamations would improve general impressions and perceived warmth. This may be because women perceive stronger backlash against them for being perceived as 'cold' if they do not use exclamations.' Researchers also suggest that 84 per cent of women worried about whether or not they should use exclamation marks. 'Women reported being more conscious than men of their use of exclamation points, often feeling they used too many exclamations and worrying about how others perceive this usage. 'This suggests that balancing the use of exclamation points to meet society's expectations of warmth, while avoiding the reduction of other perceptions, is particularly challenging for women,' they said. Researchers believe their findings show that in situations where a signal of warmth is important, people should use more exclamation points and where a projection of power is important, people should limit such usage. Exclamation marks were invented by 14th-century scholar Alpoleio da Urbisaglia but it took 50 years for scholar Coluccio Salutati to use them in writing.

Researchers discover the immune system's ‘fountain of youth' - but it has a cost
Researchers have discovered the 'fountain of youth' for cells - but it comes with a big cost. Some people over 60 years old were found to have immune systems that appear to much younger in wear-and-tear, Mayo Clinic researchers announced Thursday. The immune system is what protects us from getting sick and promotes healing. With age, the immune system's ability to protect the body from infection and disease can wane. Young immune systems are constantly exposed to new bacteria and viruses, and previous research has shown that infant immune systems beat those of adults at fighting off the invaders. Researchers now say some have immune systems that don't match their age. "We observed that these patients have very young immune systems despite being in their 60s and 70s,' Dr. Cornelia Weyand, a Mayo Clinic rheumatologist and clinician-scientist, said in a statement. 'But the price they pay for that is autoimmunity.' Autoimmunity is what happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues and organs. There are more than 100 known autoimmune diseases, according to the Cleveland Clinic, including lupus, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, celiac disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Women are at a higher risk than men, thanks to genetic and hormonal differences, according to Stanford Medicine. Doctors discovered this anomaly in more than 100 older patients who went to the Minnesota clinic to receive treatment for a rare autoimmune disease known as giant cell arteritis. Giant cell arteritis is an inflammation of the lining of your arteries that can affect the arteries in your head, the clinic explained. Untreated, it can lead to blindness, an aortic aneurysm, and, less commonly, stroke. It frequently causes headaches, jaw pain and vision problems. What causes the disorder remains unknown. Studying the diseased tissue of these patients, the researchers found they had specialized cells in their immune system known as 'stem-like T cells.' The cells behave like young stem cells, which are critical for repairing and maintaining a healthy immune system. But, in this case, they were spreading the autoimmune disease. Going forward, the scientists hope to learn more about this link and what they observed from the patients. "Contrary to what one may think, there are benefits to having an immune system that ages in tandem with the body," Dr. Jörg Goronzy, a Mayo Clinic researcher on aging, said. "We need to consider the price to pay for immune youthfulness. That price can be autoimmune disease."
