BJP leader Dilip Ghosh's absence at Modi, Shah events sparks speculation over internal rift
Former West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Dilip Ghosh's absence from key party events, including the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, has sparked speculation among the party's rank and file.
On June 1, Mr. Shah held a Vijay Sankalp Karyakarta Sammelan at Kolkata's Netaji Indoor Stadium, where leaders from the party's organisation across the State were present. Mr. Ghosh, considered the most successful of BJP leaders in the State, was conspicuous by his absence.
This was the second time in less than a week that the former MP was absent from a programme of a top BJP leader. The other instance was the public meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Alipurduar in north Bengal on May 29.
'I was not invited, so I did not go. My name was not there in the list. Those who were invited to the event, they went. Those who are giving leadership to the party must have taken the decision (of extending invitations),' Mr. Ghosh told journalists on Monday.
Mr. Ghosh said that in an 'organisational meeting', if someone was not invited, then it was not proper for him to attend the meeting. He pointed out that a number of former State unit presidents were also not invited to the recent events.
However, speculation about a rift between Mr. Ghosh and the State BJP leadership has gained ground in political circles over the past few months.
On April 30, Mr. Ghosh, along with his MP, met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the inauguration of the newly built Jagannath Temple in Digha. Several BJP leaders have been accusing him of cosying up to the Trinamool Congress supremo and betraying the sentiments of the party workers.
Track record
Mr. Ghosh has been considered as the most successful party president in the State, and under his leadership, the party won 18 of the 42 Lok sabha seats in the State in 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Mr. Ghosh was replaced by Sukanta Majumdar as West Bengal BJP president in 2021. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Mr. Ghosh lost to Trinamool Congress candidate and former BJP leader Kirti Azad from the Burdwan-Durgapur Lok Sabha constituency. The party had decided to replace him from the Midnapore Lok Sabha seat, which he had won in 2019.
Mr. Ghosh's absence at key BJP events indicates that the party's West Bengal unit is a divided house. It is yet to elect a new president who will take on the Trinamool Congress before the 2026 Assembly polls.

Bihar has turned into crime capital of India, alleges Rahul
'Bihar, once considered the land of peace and justice, has now turned into the crime capital of India,' the former Congress president asserted. Addressing the 'Samvidhan Suraksha Sammelan' in Nalanda's Rajgir, Gandhi also took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for 'remaining silent' on US President Donald Trump's claims of brokering peace between India and Pakistan during the military conflict. Rajgir (Bihar), Jun 6 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday slammed the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government in Bihar over the law and order situation, alleging that the state has turned into 'the crime capital of India'. Gandhi also said he was apprehensive whether the Centre could properly conduct the caste census 'with no officers from the OBC, Dalit or tribal communities finalising the questionnaire'. 'I am fighting for the caste census to save the Constitution and for the overall betterment of the country… Wherever we form government in future, we will remove the 50 per cent cap on reservation. It will start from Bihar,' he said. On the military conflict between India and Pakistan, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha added: 'A call came from Trump and Narendra Modi ji immediately surrendered. Trump himself has said it (about brokering peace) publicly at least 11 times. But, the PM is silent over the issue. I know he has nothing to say on this.' BJP, JD(S) slam Karnataka govt for making police officials ‘scapegoat' for Bengaluru stampede
JD(S) leader and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy termed the suspension of five officials as a 'blunder' and asserted that this government should go. Bengaluru, Jun 6 (PTI) Opposition BJP and JD(S) in Karnataka on Friday jointly lashed out at the Congress government for making police officers the 'scapegoat' for the stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium here that killed 11 people, and alleged that the entire responsibility for the incident lies with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar. The stampede occurred on Wednesday evening in front of the stadium, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations. Eleven people have died and 56 were injured in the incident. The government on Thursday suspended Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda and four other senior police officials in connection with the incident for the dereliction of duty. 'Yesterday's decision to suspend five police officers is another blunder of this government. The entire fault lies with the government. To build their image by misusing this IPL victory of RCB, both CM and DCM have taken decisions (to organise victory celebration) by going against the advice given by senior officers,' Kumaraswamy said. Speaking to reporters here, he said, 'Now after the bad incident (stampede) that took place on June 4, the government is blaming it as police failure. Failure of police means government failure. This government should go according to me.' Vijayendra said Siddarmaiah to save his face has made the police officers the scapegoat by targeting them. 'Police commissioner of Bengaluru has been made the scapegoat in this entire episode. But it was a failure on part of the intelligence and the intelligence department is with Siddaramaiah,' he said. Noting that in the FIR that was registered, RCB, DNA event management firm and KSCA have been named as accused. 'But in this entire episode accused number one is the chief minister himself, accused number two is deputy CM D K Shivakumar — they have to be named as accused number one and two, because it is sheer carelessness, negligence on part of the state government, which has led to this tragedy,' the BJP chief said. The CM has to take up the responsibility, instead of making the officers as the scapegoat. 'The chief minister has to tender his resignation and D K Shivakumar has to resign,' he said. Pointing out that as per the FIR, when the permission was sought for victory rally, it was denied by the police, Vijayendra asked, then how did the government decide to organise the victory celebration on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha. 'Lakhs of people had gathered near Chinnaswamy stadium and Vidhana Soudha, so police could not give security at both places and this resulted in tragedy and loss of 11 lives,' he said. Noting that ultimately the onus is on the CM and Deputy CM, he further said, despite deaths they went on with the celebrations. 'Shivakumar had even gone to the victory celebration at the stadium despite deaths there. This is so insensitive.' Alleging that pressure was exerted by the CM himself to carryout the victory celebrations of RCB, Vijayendra claimed that the senior officials were called to CM's house and when they tried convince him not to organise celebrations hurriedly, Siddaramaiah insisted and ordered to give permission and only then permission was granted. 'This clearly shows the government's eagerness to encash on RCB's victory for their publicity gimmick that has led to this tragedy,' he added.
