Daughter or sister — How are Kannada and Tamil related?

Deccan Herald31-05-2025
Actor Kamal Haasan's remark that Kannada was born out of Tamil has sparked a furore in Karnataka, but he has said nothing new. Leaders of all political hues in Tamil Nadu propagate the sentiment, and it is part of the state anthem as well. .The actor's casual remark, made in Chennai at the audio release of his upcoming film, Thug Life, could also be seen in the context of the Dravidian movement spearheaded by Periyar in the early part of the 20th century. As an ideologue, Periyar (1879-1973) espoused the cause of the south and opposed Hindi dominance. He held that all south Indian languages were born from Old Tamil. In current-day politics, Kamal Haasan is seeking to enter the Rajya Sabha with support from the DMK, a party founded on Periyarist ideology..What Periyar calls Old Tamil is the very same language that linguists call Proto-Dravidian, assumed to have been the source of Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Tulu, Kodava, Badaga and less widely spoken languages such as Chenchu..Kamal Hassan's position on the supremacy of Tamil is contentious. For Kannadigas, the dispute is not so much about whether Kannada and Tamil are related — there is no question that they are — but about how they are related. Linguists DH spoke to argue that the languages are sisters, and not mother and daughter..The fallout of Kamal Haasan's casual remark, and his subsequent refusal to retract his position and apologise, has triggered outrage in Karnataka. .Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, comes 38 years after Nayakan, the gangster drama on which the two had collaborated and created box office history. .Meti Mallikarjun, linguist, professor and researcher at Kuvempu University, Shivamogga, says it is a common belief among Tamil people that Tamil is the mother of all Dravidian languages. 'There is no rationale behind it. It is like a folk belief,' he says. .Kamal Haasan would not have made the controversial statement had he acquired a deeper understanding of the history of the southern languages, he observes. 'The two languages are like branches of the same tree. The roots are what is known as Proto-Dravidian,' he says..The multiplicity of tongues in India derives predominantly from two language families — Proto-Dravidian and Proto-Indo-Aryan. 'We have 25 to 27 languages in the Dravidian family. Some studies suggest the number is 70, but we have no evidence to support it,' Meti says. .The languages branched out at different points in time — Brahui, Malto, Tulu, Gondi, Kodava, Tamil, Kannada and so on. Gradually, when mutual intelligibility among the languages faded, they became independent languages, he adds. .A well-known linguist based in Karnataka says Kannada and Tamil share a cognate relationship, and one is not a descendant of the other. .Predictably, politicians wade into language controversies to score points and push their agendas. The claim that Kannada descended from Sanskrit is advanced by some. 'These are popular ideas that do not have evidence to support them,' the linguist, who requested anonymity, says..Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada were part of the same Dravidian language group (known as the south Dravidian language group), he explains. 'Kannada was the first to branch out from it. Tamil and Malayalam were together for a long time. Some studies also suggest that Tulu and Kodava had already branched out much before Kannada,' he says..K Nallathambi, who writes fiction and poetry in Kannada and Tamil, says, 'The languages have many identical words but that does not mean one originated from the other. Korean has many words in common with Tamil, but that does not mean Korean originated from Tamil.'.The academics do not dispute the antiquity of Tamil. 'Sangam literature, which dates back to about 300 BCE, is evidence that Tamil is an old language. To add to it, one of the oldest grammar books, Tolkappiyam, was written by Tolkappiyar, a contemporary of Panini. It is a famous grammar book of south India,' Meti says..Prof Carlos, who was a Tamil professor in the Kannada department at Bangalore University — he taught Tamil through Kannada — says the belief that Tamil is older than other southern languages is deeply rooted in Tamil Nadu. 'In his poem chosen as the Tamil Nadu state anthem, Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai says all Dravidian languages originated from Tamil. The Tamils sing this song every day and go by it. He also praises the other languages. He refers to Telugu as a beautiful language, and Kannada as a happy language and so on. But he also says that they all came from the womb of the Tamil mother. This is what Kamal has also said,' he says..Tracing the history. The British missionary and linguist Robert Caldwell, who wrote A Comparative Grammar of the Dravidian or South-Indian Family of Languages in the mid-19th century, debated the etymology of the name Tamil. 'He writes that 'Dramil' has now become Tamil. But there is a debate about it. Some people say Tamil has become Dramil in some Sanskrit texts,' says Meti. .Carlos calls attention to A Dravidian Etymological Dictionary, originally published in 1961, compiled by M B Emeneau and T Burrow. 'In this book, about 12 Dravidian languages are enumerated with their roots. Words are listed in alphabetical order and compared with the other languages..For example, hogu ('go' in Kannada) is listed alongside po in Tamil and so on,' he explains. He describes it as a pioneering book that put forth the theory that all south Indian languages came from a Proto-Dravidian mother..While it is true that Kannada and Tamil share many similarities in grammar and lexis, it is equally true that, over the centuries, they have chosen their priorities differently. Formal Kannada borrows generously from Sanskrit, while formal Tamil mines its Dravidian lexis to create new terms. For example, for 'president', Kannada uses 'rashtrapati', a term adopted by many Indian languages with a Sanskrit influence, while Tamil has coined a more native 'kudiyarasu thalaivar' — head of the republic..Neither Kamal Haasan nor Mani Ratnam is a stranger to Kannada. The actor has starred in several hit Kannada films, including Rama Shama Bhama (2005), in which he speaks Kannada in the north Karnataka dialect. Mani Ratnam made his directorial debut with the Kannada film Pallavi Anu Pallavi (1983). .The two languages enjoy much warmth, but sometimes, sibling rivalry kicks in.

Fans angered by sudden demolition of Kannada icon Dr Vishnuvardhan's resting place in Bengaluru: Report

Bengaluru witnessed high emotions on Friday as scores of admirers of Kannada cinema icon Dr Vishnuvardhan assembled outside Abhiman Studio in Kengeri, furious over the sudden demolition of a structure at the spot where the actor was laid to rest in 2009. The incident reignited property disputes, with the Vishnuvardhan Fans Association calling it a betrayal of their ongoing struggle for a permanent memorial in Bengaluru. (HT/Representational image) The overnight action, carried out under police protection and reportedly with the court's approval, has reignited long-standing tensions over the site. The land, once owned by veteran actor Balakrishna's family, has been at the centre of a prolonged property dispute, The New Indian Express reported. Dr Vishnuvardhan, who passed away on December 30, 2009, was cremated within the studio premises. Fans have since campaigned for a permanent memorial to honour him, urging the government to intervene. Repeated pleas to resolve the ownership issue went unanswered, further fueling Friday's anger, the report said. Association president Veerakaputra Srinivasa voiced his disappointment on social media, lamenting that legal rulings had left fans powerless, as only the family or the government could take decisions regarding the site, as per the report. He also alleged that those claiming rights to Balakrishna's estate were planning to construct a shopping mall on the land. Several protestors were detained by Kengeri police to prevent escalation. The late actor's wife, Bharathi Vishnuvardhan, and family members have not yet commented. Kannada Film Chamber of Commerce president Narsimhalu said that the demolition followed a court order and emphasised the need to respect the judgment, adding that discussions will soon be held with both the fans' association and Bharathi Vishnuvardhan, the report added.

Coolie vs War 2 advance booking: Rajinikanth film set to obliterate Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR combine, sells 4x tickets

This Independence Day weekend, two mega films are releasing in theatres across India. YRF Spy Universe's first pan-India outing, War 2, brings together Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR. But it will be up against Rajinikanth's star power, aided by Lokesh Kanagaraj's name, and support from Nagarjuna, Upendra, and Aamir Khan. It is a mouth-watering box office clash, and one that is heavily anticipated. Coolie and War 2 are both releasing in theatres on August 14. Coolie vs War 2 Coolie has the might of Rajinikanth propelling it. The superstar is still the biggest name in Tamil cinema at 73. Lokesh Kanagaraj's name is an addition to the film's stature, as are the three superstars in supporting roles. The film is expected to dominate the Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka markets. But the Telugu states and the north are where it will see the biggest competition from War 2. Ayan Mukerji's War 2 stars Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR. The combination of War's legacy, YRF Spy Universe's standing, and Hrithik stardom is expected to lead War 2 to a win over Coolie in the Hindi markets, but it won't be easy. The Telugu market is where the film is expected to score big. Jr NTR's increased stardom since RRR will help propel the film big, even though Coolie also features a big Telugu star in Nagarjuna. But given that NTR is the lead in War 2 and Nagarjuna a support act in Coolie, the former is expected to gain more traction. How Coolie is winning the war The pre-sales for both films began in the international markets last week, with North America setting the ball rolling. Coolie has taken a fabulous start in the United States. The advance booking for the film in the US is crossing $2 million ( ₹17 crore), and there is significant momentum for the film in other major regions, such as Gulf countries, Malaysia, Singapore, and the UK. Overall, the overseas advance booking for the film has crossed $4 million as per estimates. It is expected to break Tamil cinema's all-time overseas advance booking record of ₹66 crore (roughly $8 million), set by Vijay's Leo. With five days to go for release, it looks all set to go past that mark. War 2 has so far not reached $500K in advance sales in the US, which is just one-fourth of what Coolie has managed. Across all markets, it is still shy of the $1 million mark. The Telugu version is doing better than the Hindi one so far, raising further concerns. Coolie and War 2 advance booking in India Advance bookings for Coolie began in Kerala on Friday evening and Tamil Nadu on Saturday morning, with other markets to follow suit soon. Already, the film has sold one lakh tickets worth over ₹2 crore by Saturday afternoon, according to Sacnilk. As other markets open up, the figure is expected to go up exponentially. War 2 is yet to open its advance booking in India. It is expected to start pre-sales for its tickets on Sunday, August 10, four days ahead of the film's release. Both films are releasing in theatres on August 14.

Coolie vs War 2 box office advance: Rajinkanth-starrer heading for a Rs 80 crore opening, Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR film's overseas growth worrisome

The battle of the stars has already begun with two of the biggest movies of the year are releasing during the Independence Day weekend. Rajinikanth starrer Coolie and Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR's War 2 are both releasing on the same day and their target audience is similar to each other. The advance bookings for both these films have started internationally, and in India, Coolie has already started minting money as they recently opened their advance booking. Presently, Coolie is doing much better than War 2 in the international markets. But since War 2 is yet to open ticket sales in India, it looks like the competition here might push War 2 ahead. According to Bollywood Hungama, Coolie has already sold tickets worth Rs 27 crore internationally, and their projections predict a massive Rs 80 crore opening day for the film. US collections of the film hold the biggest piece of this pie, followed by Malaysia, UAE, and Australia/New Zealand. On the other hand, the publication reported that War 2 is at Rs 4.5 crore in advance bookings internationally, with the Telugu version of the film contributing around 50 percent of the entire amount. With Jr NTR making his debut in Bollywood, this number could increase as well. ALSO READ | Sitaare Zameen Par: If you need Aamir Khan to manipulate you into being a good person, maybe you're beyond redemption War 2 is yet to open its advance booking here, and since it marks the debut of Jr NTR in Bollywood, it is expected to have a massive opening in the Telugu states. Coolie, however, has opened the bookings, and the current numbers point towards a slow opening day. The film has sold seats worth Rs 2.8 crore across 2822 shows in the country. Accounting for block seats, that number goes up to Rs 5.27 crore. Both films have a star studded cast, and have been produced by deep pocketed studios, not to mention both are being helmed by well known directors. Backed by the Sun Group, the cast of Coolie includes Rajinikanth, Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Upendra, and Soubin Shahir. Coolie is releasing in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. War 2 is being produced by Aditya Chopra's Yash Raj Studios, and the cast is filled with the likes of Hrithik, Jr NTR, Kiara Advani, Ashutosh Rana. War 2 is releasing in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil.
