The Brightening Air review – shades of Vanya as a Sligo family squabble, tease and wrestle
We are in the rural depths of County Sligo in 1981, inside a household run by two siblings: the stoic Stephen (Brian Gleeson), who is existing rather than living, and the eccentric and autistic Billie (Rosie Sheehy). They are marooned on the down-at-heel farm, just about making ends meet until their wealthier brother, Dermot (Chris O'Dowd) drops by. His presence coincides with the arrival of an old blind uncle and former clergyman (Seán McGinley) who has been ejected from church quarters and now shuffles into the family home with his housekeeper, Elizabeth (Derbhle Crotty), with a dispute over the farm's ownership – though this plot point does not emerge until late on.
Comfy domesticity offsets abrasive sibling undercurrents as they gather around a dining table to eat, reminiscence and poke each other. McPherson, who also directs, throws in other tensions: Dermot comes with his inappropriately young squeeze, Freya (Aisling Kearns) while his estranged wife, Lydia (Hannah Morrish), still in love with her husband, puts her faith in 'magic water' that might return him to her.
The pace is too easy in the first half, as the flotsam and jetsam of family life float by. There is a good Chekhovian mix of melancholy and humour in the cross-conversational currents between family members, but it all needs more momentum and emotional drive. The second half brings more intensity but also a plot that feels stretched to aburdism: there is a miracle in the vein of the biblical Bartimaeus (the blind beggar from Jericho) alongside the falling out and making up over inheritance.
The mystical element sits well within the plotline of the magic water but becomes pronounced and protruding when characters talk about God and nothingness. You get the sense of a playwright preoccupied by big questions about the afterlife (with repeated mentions of reincarnation and the Ganges) but this sometimes sounds non sequitur in the mouths of his characters.
There are none of the explosions of an American dysfunction drama here and angry face-offs between siblings steer close to the humorous and absurd.
Sibling ribbing sometimes combusts into something more; there is wrestling between brothers, the lone sister is one of the 'lads', and home truths are occasionally spoken, or shouted, but you wish these scenes would dig into a few more nerves.
Still, there are heaps of charm and a few searing moments. McPherson's last work at the Old Vic was the musical Girl from the North Country, and there is music here too, though it is not a musical. Lovely dramatic interludes feature piano music, songs carrying Celtic lilts but also, puzzlingly, a Bollywood number.
An incredibly strong cast is gathered: O'Dowd is a delight as the family's self-regarding eldest brother and Sheehy, as always, is a standout force. She plays a largely comic character but infuses Billie with great emotion.
The idea of love and its yearning is shown with delicacy. Every character seems unrequited, from the farmhand (Eimhin Fitzgerald Doherty) who is sweet on Billie, to the sexual undercurrents that swirl around Stephen and Lydia. Rae Smith's set is beautiful, full of diaphanous, overlying images of trees, water, misty mountains, sky, conjuring a vivid sense of place but also carrying a certain otherworldly magic. Sometimes this production lifts off, as if it is about to enter into the sublime, but is strangely dragged down by too many elements jostling to take flight.
At the Old Vic, London, until 14 June.

My Chemical Romance set to play Wembley Stadium after UK tour tease
My Chemical Romance fans are going wild after a Wembley Stadium show was all but confirmed for an upcoming UK tour. The American emo rock legends, best known for huge hits like Welcome To The Black Parade and I'm Not Okay (I Promise), haven't performed in the UK since dates in Milton Keynes and Warrington on their postponed 2022 reunion tour. However, that looks set to change after some major teases about a UK leg of their Long Live The Black Parade Tour, which could take place in 2026. The band – featuring founding members Gerard Way, Mikey Way, Frank Iero and Ray Toro – are currently celebrating almost two decades since their iconic rock opera, and it'll be our turn soon. Last night, the official Wembley Stadium social media accounts shared a photo of the famous arch lit up red, with the group's cryptic imagery on display. Not surprisingly, fans have gone into full meltdown mode – they're really not okay. 'MY CHEM are going to play Wembley? Wild,' wrote @djrustynail, while @emobuckeybarnes added: 'MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE AT WEMBLEY STADIUM I NEED TO BE THERE (sic)' 'i'm gonna pass out i'm so excited,' @g0th1cluvr admitted, as @bearnellied said: 'Get in losers we're seeing MCR at Wembley.' Others are a little concerned at the lack of teases by other venues, and hope there are more UK dates to be confirmed. 'Please be more than just a London date,' begged @brettd1981, with many other fans making similar pleas. Considered one of the most influential bands of their era and genre, My Chem released four full studio albums and a string of Platinum-selling singles between 2003 and 2010. The band called it a day in 2013 after more than a decade in the spotlight, before reuniting for a one-off show in 2019 and announcing tour dates across the world in 2020, which were postponed until 2022 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. At this time, the band released their first new song in eight years – The Foundations of Decay – but a new album never arrived, and the reunion tour concluded in 2023. In tragic news, previous drummer Bryar was found dead at his home in November 2024, and the band played only two shows that year. MCR returned to regular live shows in July 2025 on the Long Live The Black Parade Tour and have more shows planned for 2026, and now a new video on social media recently teased a return to the UK for the first time in four years. In the video, which features a parody game show called Quizzo, the host asks says: 'Our two fine contestants will help us learn who will be the next lucky country to win the grand prize of one nuclear winter?' After one of the contestants presses a big button, the host shouts, 'Congratulations, United Kingdom!' indicating that the Teenagers hitmakers will be heading here soon. Naturally, My Chem fans have taken this news calmly. @KofidereVT said: 'My Chemical Romance may have just teased UK dates. I swear to god, I will scream to get an opportunity to see them live again. Gerard Way, don't break my heart.' @Cryophantasm jumped the gun: 'My Chemical Romance has just announced a UK tour, this is not a drill, I am going to die,' while @ArtsTinyHat said they would 'not be calm' about the news. Meanwhile, @RoozNotDead joked My Chemical Romance touring the UK would mean that their money is 'not safe'. More Trending During their heyday, My Chemical Romance scored nine top 40 singles in the UK and released two top 10 studio albums, with 2006's The Black Parade reaching number two on the album charts. Their biggest win came in October 2006 when their song Welcome to the Black Parade unexpectedly spent two weeks at number one, beating competition from the likes of Nicole Scherzinger, Girls Aloud, and Meat Loaf. Welcome to the Black Parade remains the band's most successful song to date, having been certified 2x Platinum in the UK and a whopping 7x Platinum in America. Got a story? The Call Me By Your Name actor, 29, shared an image from a historic boxing match showing Muhammad Ali celebrating victory, overlaid with the words 'Dream Big' in red, handwritten-style lettering instead of wishing his girlfriend a happy 28th birthday. The American-French actors cryptic post has now added fuel to fire as fans fear that Kylie and Timothee have officially called it a day. It comes after Kourtney Kardashian's fans pointed out a deadly parenting mistake as the star took emergency action. They made their first public appearance as a couple in September that year at Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour in Los Angeles, where they were photographed kissing and laughing together in the VIP section. While Timothée decided to publicly snub Kylie's birthday, her famous family marked her big day with their annual warm and emotional posts. Kylie's mum, Kris Jenner shared a carousel of throwback images of her youngest daughter as she wrote: 'Happy birthday to my baby girl!! You are truly beautiful inside and out… You are so smart, strong, creative, loving, kind, funny, and always so supportive… I love you beyond measure… Mommy.' With all my heart, Your second mommy, Khloé.' Kourtney Kardashian posted: "Tinker Bell! May you shine forever my little goose sister.' While Kim wrote: 'Kylie's day! Happy Birthday to the goat." The birthday girl also shared her own post, uploading childhood snaps including one where she sits proudly with her first bicycle, captioning it: 'happy birthday to meeee.'

Horror film with ‘greatest twist of all time' now available to stream
If you're a horror fan who gets a kick out of a good twist, this 2000s Nicole Kidman film is right up your street. Starring Oscar-winning Australian-American actress Kidman, 58, in the lead role of Grace, The Others is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, following a woman living on a family estate in the Channel Islands with her two photosensitive children. Set during World War II, Grace is awaiting news on her missing husband while attempting to protect her children from harm by the sun due to their rare disease. Things take a sinister turn, however, when Grace's mother, Anne (Alakina Mann), claims she is seeing ghosts, and while Grace initially brushes the spookiness off as their staff playing tricks, she soon comes to realise something far more menacing is at play. The 2001 supernatural flick is famous for its huge plot twist, which viewers have long branded one of the best in cinema. Thanks to its cast's performances and gripping story, The Others was a box office smash, grossing $210million (£182m) worldwide on a $17m (14.7m) budget. It was lauded by critics, earning 15 nominations and eight wins at the 16th Goya Awards, and becoming the first English-language film without a word of Spanish dialogue to triumph in the best film category at Spain's Goya Awards. Kidman was also recognised in other best actress categories for her role, including at the Golden Globes. Ultimately, the Alejandro Amenábar-directed horror is highly regarded as not just one of the 2000s' best movies but, for many, the greatest horror ever made. As for what fans have had to say, The Others, which was shot in northern Spain, has a respectable 77% audience score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as well as 84% from critics. Among the 250,000+ reviews, user Ry H branded it with 4.5 stars as recently as July 2025, writing: 'My favorite horror movie ever with one of the biggest twists that I never saw coming.' 'The Others lives up to the unpredictability hype, you can't guess what's happening. The characters are incredibly well-written. Their decisions, the plot makes sense until everything gets a new meaning', writes Mate P. 'Has to be the best suspense movie of all time, period. The acting and filming are fantastic', echoes Josh K. Julian S agrees: 'THE OTHERS finds Kidman at her most mesmerizing, carrying a chilling slow-burn thriller that builds to a twist so sharp, it leaves you breathless.' 'This one still holds up as one of the great supernatural thrillers. Great twist, wonderful acting, especially by the children', pens Jason W. Others praise the fright flick for its ability to build tension and create a dread-filled atmosphere, with many compelled to watch for a second time after the twist is uncovered, forcing them to rethink everything they thought they knew. More Trending The Others is one of many of Kidman's projects in the horror and thriller genres, as she's also had roles in The Invasion (2007), Before I Go to Sleep (2014), and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), to name a few. She recently starred in 2025's Holland, alongside Matthew Macfadyen and Gael García Bernal, playing a mother who, upon unearthing her husband's infidelity, discovers her picture-perfect life was full of secrets. Of course, Kidman also famously plays the lead in Nine Perfect Strangers, a thriller drama series that recently dropped a second season. The Others is available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video.
