'I was tipped as next Harry Kane but Tottenham sold me – now I have seven goals in four games'
Former Tottenham Hotspur starlet Troy Parrott is living up to his tag as 'the next Harry Kane' in the Netherlands after scoring seven goals in four games for AZ Alkmaar. The 23-year-old left Spurs to join AZ in a £6.7million deal in July 2024, with his former club securing a substantial sell-on clause in the agreement.
Parrott initially joined Tottenham back in 2017 at 15 from Irish team Belvedere, but despite high expectations, he only managed to make four appearances for the senior squad. He even left with some stars warning that Spurs could be making an error in letting him go.
Branded as Ireland's best prospect since ex-Tottenham star Robbie Keane, the forward was also hailed as the next Kane while on the books at Spurs due to the pair's similarities on the pitch.
Although he didn't quite live up to the praise in north London, the Irish forward is now proving his worth in Holland with a series of impressive performances. Parrott was also part of the AZ team that lost to Spurs during their successful Europa League campaign last season.
Parrott has already scored three goals in two matches against Finnish side Ilves Tampere and two against Liechtenstein's Vaduz, both in Europa Conference League qualifying this summer. He also bagged a brace in AZ's 4-1 victory over FC Groningen in the Dutch Eredivisie's opening match at the weekend.
During his time at Spurs, Parrott had five loan spells with Millwall, Ipswich, MK Dons and Preston, experiencing varying levels of success. However, it was a temporary switch to the Eredivisie with Excelsior that truly launched his career.
The forward netted 17 times for the struggling outfit. He has also earned 29 senior caps for the Republic of Ireland, finding the net on five occasions.
But what did he make of those weighty comparisons to Kane? He told The Athletic in April 2022 that he was determined he was going to carve his own path.
"Obviously, I want to be my own player," he said. "But Kane is so good in terms of his finishing, his passing - why wouldn't I try and take little bits from there?"
"But it's not only taking bits from Kane because he plays for Tottenham. It's taking things wherever you can that will make you better. It's not annoying in any way [the comparisons], it's just how it is. When you see him on TV, you don't get to see him going to the gym before training, you don't get to see the way he trains every day.
"That's something everyone should take. There's no downside to having that relentlessness in your game. I look at that and think to be at that level these are the things you need to do."
Spurs are now accelerating their hunt for offensive reinforcements following the exit of club legend Son Heung-Min and the injury to James Maddison, which could potentially rule him out for the bulk of the campaign.
Spurs boss Thomas Frank has been busy in the transfer market, securing five new faces for the squad. Permanent deals have been concluded for Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel, Kevin Danso, Luka Vuskovic and Kota Takai, while defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha has joined on loan from Bayern Munich.
Rumours are also swirling around a move for Manchester City's winger Savinho, with a transfer to Spurs seemingly gaining traction. Speculation is also rife about potential moves for Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze and Leicester City's Bilal El Khannouss.
Spurs cleverly included a 20 per cent sell-on clause in the deal that saw Parrott head to AZ. The club are keeping their fingers crossed for a tidy sum from any future sale of Parrott, or even a bargain return to north London - a possibility they might explore in their quest for more goals.

Donnarumma ‘disappointed and disheartened' at PSG Super Cup squad omission
Italy international Donnarumma was an eye-catching omission from PSG's Super Cup squad for Wednesday's fixture with Tottenham in his home country. Big-money summer arrival Lucas Chevalier has been included and is set to make his PSG debut at Stadio Friuli after Luis Enrique confirmed he wanted a goalkeeper profile that was 'different' to Donnarumma. Italy captain Donnarumma has since taken to Instagram to criticise the decision and expressed his desire to say goodbye 'in the eyes one more time' to the PSG supporters at Parc des Princes. 'To the special Paris fans, from the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris St Germain,' Donnarumma said. 'Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success, I am disappointed and disheartened. 'I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done. 'If that doesn't happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me and I will never forget it. I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights and of you, who made me feel at home. 'To my team-mates – my second family – thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers. 'Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honour. Thank you, Paris.' Luis Enrique explained his decision in Udine, saying: 'These are always difficult decisions to make. 'I can definitely talk about Gigio, because he's one of the best players in his position, without a doubt. He's even better as a person. 'We're looking for a goalkeeping profile that is different to Donnarumma. It's always difficult to make the decision in these kinds of situations.' Italy captain Gianluigi Donnarumma (pictured) has taken to Instagram to criticise Luis Enrique's decision (Adam Davy/PA) Luis Enrique also revealed Tottenham were once an option for him and admitted they have a physical advantage on Wednesday. The 55-year-old was linked with the vacancy at Spurs after Antonio Conte left in 2023, but Ange Postecoglou was eventually hired and Luis Enrique subsequently took over PSG in a sliding doors moment for both men. Postecoglou was able to mastermind Europa League success in May and end Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought, whilst Luis Enrique guided PSG to the holy grail of a maiden Champions League title. The pair will not face each other in Italy after Spurs ruthlessly discarded with Postecoglou following a poor domestic campaign and the appointment of Thomas Frank – alongside the fact they have been in pre-season training since early July, while PSG only returned last Wednesday after their Club World Cup exploits – gives the English outfit a slight edge, according to Luis Enrique. 'Well, I have to say that it is difficult because they changed recently the manager, new manager, some new players, they play a few friendly matches before tomorrow's match and I don't know what kind of game they are going to plan,' Luis Enrique acknowledged. 'It is going to be difficult because they have been training for the last month and we are in our first week, but it is not an excuse. 'We are going to try to compete at our best.' On Spurs' links, Luis Enrique added: 'Well, there were some options for me in the last six months before I came to Paris and Tottenham was one of them.'

Gianluigi Donnarumma's three Premier League transfer options as 'terms agreed' after PSG exit
Gianluigi Donnarumma is leaving Paris Saint-Germain and has already held talks over joining one Premier League side in the summer transfer window, with two others interested Gianluigi Donnarumma has put Premier League sides on red alert after announcing his departure from Paris Saint-Germain. Donnarumma has been told he doesn't have a future at PSG by manager Luis Enrique and has said goodbye in a fiery statement on Instagram. "Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success,' he said. "I am disappointed and disheartened.' Earlier in the day, Enrique had confirmed that Donnarumma had been dropped from the squad for the Super Cup against Tottenham on Wednesday night. 'Donnarumma is out of the squad as it's my own decision. I am 100 per cent responsible," said Enrique. 'I want a different kind of goalkeeper and I made this decision. Gigio is one of the best goalkeepers in the whole world. The life of a top-level footballer, and the same goes for us coaches, is this: it wasn't an easy decision but I take full responsibility for it.' Donnarumma is still only 26 years old and, as a European champion with Italy in 2021 and a Champions League winner with PSG in May, the goalkeeper shouldn't be short of suitors. There is still ample time until the summer transfer window closes on September 1, but where could he end up? Here Mirror Football takes a look over the Premier League options. Manchester City The most recent noises have been coming out of the Etihad, where Pep Guardiola is said to have a soft spot for Donnarumma. There has been a lot of movement in the goalkeeping department at City this summer, with rumours of a possible departure for Ederson to Galatasaray followed by the club re-signing James Trafford for £31m from Burnley. Late on Tuesday night came news, via L'Equipe, that Donnarumma had agreed personal terms with City. The Italy international is understood to be very keen on a move to City, who will now have to negotiate a fee with PSG. By making their desire to offload Donnarumma public and promote new keeper Lucas Chevalier, PSG have backed themselves into a corner, yet reportedly value him at £43million. Donnarumma's contract expires in less than a year so City will surely try to negotiate that fee downwards. His arrival would surely mean the end to Ederson's eight-year stay at the club and would mean Trafford once again taking a backseat at his boyhood club. Manchester United Question marks over the form of Andre Onana at United have been a constant almost ever since his arrival from Ajax – and things came to a head last season. Ruben Amorim was forced to take Onana out of the firing line after a mistake-filled performance against Lyon in the Europa League, but his replacement Altay Bayindir was no better. United reportedly contacted Aston Villa to enquire about the availability of Emi Martinez earlier this summer, while they have also been linked with Royal Antwerp's Senne Lammens. Donnarumma has always appeared to be an ambitious target, given United's lack of European football and 15th-placed finish last season. The club have distanced themselves from a move for him, which would seem unlikely anyway. One problem is United's lack of available funds. Donnarumma fell out with PSG after demanding a bumper new contract and United would need to offload some of their unwanted players before adding to their £200m summer spending spree. Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho are their most valuable assets in that regard. Chelsea Robert Sanchez has never convinced as Chelsea goalkeeper, who made an attempt to sign Mike Maignan earlier this summer. The Blues have sold Djordje Petrovic to Bournemouth for £25m, sent Kepa Arrizabalaga to Arsenal for £5m and let Marcus Bettinelli go to City. They still have Filip Jorgensen and Mike Penders on their books, with the latter highly-rated and currently on loan at Strasbourg for the season. Chelsea are reportedly content with their options – and the move for Maignan was an opportunistic one, rather than a planned one. But the chance to sign Donnarumma, who would clearly be an upgrade on the error-prone Sanchez, might change their minds. Sanchez improved at the end of last season and fits Enzo Maresca's ethos of playing out from the back, yet will always have a blunder in him.
