The trade deadline isn't providing instant gratification for the Yankees.
The YES Network broadcast crew watched in disbelief as the Bombers surrendered 6-0, 9-4 and 12-10 leads on Friday to the Marlins. Miami pulled off a nearly improbable three-run ninth-inning rally to give the Yankees a 13-12 defeat.

As Marlins infielder Xavier Edwards tied the score in the ninth with a hit, assisted by an error in right field from new Yankee José Caballero, the YES broadcast of Michael Kay and Paul O'Neill voiced their shock.

'Michael, you get to a point where you just can't make this up … it's like a Little League game going on out here,' O'Neill said.

'This whole game, Paul, kind of has the feel of you're having a bad dream and you cannot wake up,' Kay replied.
The game was especially rough for many of the new acquisitions that the Yankees added leading up to the deadline.
Reliever Camilo Doval blew the save and was tagged with the loss in the bottom of the ninth.

Jake Bird only recorded one out and allowed four earned runs.
Jose Caballero made a key error in Friday's loss.
David Bednar allowed two earned runs.
And Caballero's blunder was effectively the nail in the coffin, as the Marlins won on an infield dribbler moments later.

The Yankees are down to 60-50 on the season and 3 1/2 games out of first place in the AL East.
The Marlins are up to 53-55, seven games out of the final NL wild-card spot.

Dolphins predicted to sign $3M perfect match defender with 8-INTs to feel void in secondary

Dolphins predicted to sign $3M perfect match defender with 8-INTs to feel void in secondary originally appeared on The Sporting News The Miami Dolphins are deep into training camp, but nothing could have prepared them for the wave of injuries, especially some long-term ones. A couple of weeks ago, the Dolphins signed two veteran cornerbacks in hopes of filling the void in the secondary. 'Miami signed veteran cornerback Mike Hilton to help bolster the unit, NFL Network's Cam Wolfe reported on Saturday. The Dolphins announced earlier in the day that they had signed cornerback Jack Jones,' Eric Edholm wrote. At the time of those signings, Miami believed the cornerback room was sufficiently reinforced. However, safety Ashtyn Davis then suffered a severe injury. 'Got another injury in the secondary ... this time it's safety Ashtyn Davis, who stayed down after an 11-on-11 snap. Hobbled to the sideline clearly favoring his left leg. Mike McDaniel and Anthony Weaver went over to see him,' Sports Illustrated's Alain Poupart wrote. With Davis's injury, alarms have already sounded for Miami to potentially add another cornerback. Sports Illustrated's Dante Collinelli believes the Dolphins could sign Michael Davis as a replacement. 'Davis is another player with starting experience who is coming off a down season. He had just two starts for the Commanders last year despite appearing in 15 total games,' Collinelli wrote. 'That said, Davis is a primary zone coverage cornerback who has played passable football before, so it stands to reason the Dolphins could consider him.' Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Being a strong zone defender fits perfectly with the Dolphins' scheme, especially since they ran Cover 3 more than any other coverage last season. 'The Dolphins have run Cover 3 on 33.6 percent of their defensive snaps this season, which is by far their most popular call,' Collinelli wrote. Michael Davis could definitely provide solid support for Miami in their primarily zone-based defense. Defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver needs all the help he can get as injuries continue to plague the defense. The play style of the Dolphins and Davis would be a great fit.

Marlins' Stowers named NL Player of the Month

One month after being named an All-Star for the first time, Kyle Stowers was bestowed another prestigious honor Monday: National League Player of the Month for July. The Marlins outfielder posted 20 RBI, 10 homers and 16 runs in 24 games with a .364 batting average, .451 on-base percentage of .451 and slugging percentage of .818. He also had a 1.269 on-base plus slugging for the month. His slugging and OPS were both franchise records for July, and his OPS was the third highest for any month in Marlins' history. Stowers, 27, is the first Marlins player to be named NL Player of the Month since Giancarlo Stanton in August 2017. The left-hander is also the fifth Marlin to win the award, joining Jeff Conine (June 1995), Hanley Ramírez (June 2008), Emilio Bonifacio (July 2011) and Stanton, who owns the club record with three NL Player of the Month awards (also May 2012 and June 2015). After Sunday's 7-3 win against the Yankees, Marlins manager Clayton McCullough was asked about Stowers garnering attention for the NL Most Valuable Player Award this season. 'I think Kyle should be in that conversation — I really do,' McCullough said. 'Kyle is putting together a real season, with power and average, and the walks, and the [six] outfield assists. Kyle has got a couple of months left, but at this point, it's something, that you, know, he put out there.' Heading into Monday's three-game series opener against the Astros, Stowers ranks fourth in the National League in both OPS (.948) and slugging (.575), fifth in batting average (.296), and tied for sixth in home runs (25). He's 10th in OBP (.373) and tied for 11th in RBI (71) after four in Sunday's win. Last month, Stowers became the first Marlins outfielder to be named an NL All-Star since Stanton and Marcell Ozuna in 2017. And he made history with his offensive fireworks bookending the Midsummer Classic. On July 13 and 18, he became the first player in MLB history with five home runs in a two-game span. That included a walk-off home run July 18 at home against the Royals. He had a career high five hits, three homers, and 14 total bases on July 13 on the road against the Orioles. He also joined the Tigers' Ty Cobb (May 5-6, 1925) as the only players in MLB history with at least eight hits, five home runs, and 11 RBI in a two-game span since RBI became an official stat in 1920. He has continued his hot hitting into August. He smacked a grand slam on Friday and whacked a three-run home run — his first tater against a lefty this season — on Sunday. 'What Kyle has been doing, I'm not surprised,' McCullough said after Sunday's game. 'He's taking ferocious swings. Kyle is a dangerous hitter that can cover a lot of locations now and pitch types. Kyle is having a really special season.'

Yankees Predicted to Replace Paul Goldschmidt With $90 Million 3-Time Batting Champ

The New York Yankees emerged from the trade deadline with some decisive win-now additions, but it hasn't helped them in the standings so far. The Yankees endured a harsh sweep at the hands of the Miami Marlins on Sunday, as defensive miscues, offensive regression and issues on the mound all played their parts. And one regression in particular is set to have a major impact on the Yankees' infield plans going forward. After joining the Yankees on a one-year deal this past winter, veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt enjoyed a brilliant start to the season. Through May, he was batting .333, but that average has plummeted to .277 for the season as he slumps. Now he seems set to return to free agency without a Yankees reunion in the cards. And the team has been predicted to replace him with a blockbuster free agency signing. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 7: Paul Goldschmidt #48 of the New York Yankees looks on before the first inning against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium on June 7, 2025 in New York City. (Photo by) More Hunger/Getty "Luis Arraez has won three consecutive batting titles and could be in the mix for a fourth if Will Smith either fades down the stretch or even fails to make enough plate appearances to qualify, which he is barely on pace to do," Kerry Miller wrote in a roundup of free agency projections for Bleacher Report. "Prediction: Arraez signs a six-year, $90M-ish deal with the Yankees." With Jazz Chisholm Jr. locked in at second base, Arraez would be the natural replacement for Goldschmidt at first for years to come. And on paper he would be a strong complement to the batting order, as he's one of the biggest on-base threats in the sport who could hit ahead of franchise slugger Aaron Judge. However, Arraez has some notable holes in his game, even as a superlative contact hitter. In particular, he isn't a very strong defender or base runner, two issues the Yankees are struggling to overcome as a team. Still, with Goldschmidt likely out the door, bringing in Arraez would be an emphatic replacement for a team with persistent World Series aspirations.
