JOHOR BAHRU: OCBC Group views Johor as a strategic investment and trade hub that connects ASEAN and China, and is ready to expand its role in supporting the growth of various key sectors in the state.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said this was conveyed during his recent meeting with the top management of the financial institution, during which they also discussed the potential for broader cooperation in the context of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) development.
'Given the strength of its network in both (ASEAN and China), OCBC is ready to support the growth of key sectors such as logistics, manufacturing, infrastructure, fintech, and digital economy,' he said in a post on his Facebook page today.
According to him, OCBC's expertise in cross-border financing, wealth management, and digital transformation makes the institution a highly valuable strategic partner in attracting high-quality investments into Johor.
He added that such collaborations could further boost Johor's competitiveness at the regional level and contribute to the development of a sustainable and inclusive economic ecosystem, in line with the state's development agenda that is focused on innovation, talent, and high-value investment.
Meanwhile, Onn Hafiz also stated that OCBC's commitment to increasing its workforce in Johor --particularly hiring local graduates with a starting salary of between RM3,200 and RM3,600 -- is aligned with the aspirations behind the establishment of the Johor Talent Development Council (JTDC).
He said this demonstrates OCBC's seriousness in offering high-value jobs, which will help ensure that the development of the JS-SEZ is supported by competent local talent.
JTDC is a strategic initiative aimed at developing local workforce talent in Johor who meet industry needs, ensuring the local talent pool is skilled, competitive, and responsive to market demands.
Previously, OCBC Group announced in a statement that it had invested over RM11 billion in various businesses in Johor since early 2024 as part of its commitment to support the development of the JS-SEZ.

CPO Futures End Lower Amid Weaker Soybean Oil Prices
By K. Naveen Prabu KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Bernama) -- The crude palm oil (CPO) futures contract on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives ended lower today, influenced by declining soybean oil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade. Palm oil trader David Ng told Bernama that concerns over rising output also weighed on market sentiment. 'We see support at RM3,850 per tonne and resistance at RM4,080,' he said. Fastmarkets Palm Oil Analytics senior analyst Dr Sathia Varqa said CPO futures remained mostly flat to lower in the second half of trading, continuing the subdued performance seen earlier in the day. 'Traders moved cautiously amid the easing of crude oil price risk premiums, following a fragile truce between Israel and Iran. 'Despite solid fundamentals, including higher exports and reduced production, palm futures struggled to gain significant buying momentum as traders remained cautious due to uncertainty in the broader macroeconomic environment,' he said. At the close, the spot-month July contract fell by RM24 to RM3,939 per tonne, August 2025 declined by RM24 to RM3,958 per tonne, and September 2025 dropped RM18 to RM3,965 per tonne. October 2025 slipped RM11 to RM3,969 per tonne, November 2025 eased RM6 to RM3,978 per tonne, and December 2025 decreased RM2 to RM3,994 per tonne.

Labuan-KK airfare soars to RM1,207, surpassing flights to Seoul, Bangkok
Published on: Thursday, June 26, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 26, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. LABUAN: Residents and frequent travellers from this duty-free island are voicing growing frustration over skyrocketing airfares for the short Labuan–Kota Kinabalu route, with prices now outpacing even international flights to destinations such as Bangkok and Seoul. For many in Labuan, air travel is not a luxury but a necessity, yet tickets for the roughly 35-minute domestic flight are being sold at rates as high as RM1,207 for a one-way trip on July 2. By comparison, longer international flights from Kota Kinabalu to Bangkok, which take about three hours, start at RM411, while flights to Seoul, a journey of over five hours, are priced from RM661. David Lee, 49, who frequently travels between the two locations for oil and gas business, told Bernama the fares were 'absurd' and 'unacceptable'. 'I was planning my usual trip to Kota Kinabalu for a meeting and was shocked to see fares exceeding RM1,200. How can a flight under one hour cost more than an international trip to Korea?' he said. Another traveller, Nurul Shafiqah Abdullah, 34, a government officer based in Labuan, said such fare hikes were putting a strain on those who rely on the route for essential reasons. 'This isn't a holiday route. It's a lifeline for many who depend on travelling for medical check-ups, work commitments or family matters. These prices are pushing people to the edge,' she said. For Raymond Chong, 41, who runs a logistics company, the limited choice of carriers only adds to the frustration. 'It's either MasWings or Malaysia Airlines, sometimes small planes, sometimes a Boeing. There's no real competition, so you either pay or don't go,' he said. Local entrepreneur Faridah Musa, 45, urged the federal government and aviation authorities to address the pricing mechanism, calling the issue more than just a travel inconvenience. 'We are an island with no road access. Flights are essential, not optional. At this point, it's not just an inconvenience, it's an economic disadvantage for us.' She said calls are mounting for transparency in fare structures and for greater efforts to introduce more airline competition to ensure affordable travel for the people of Labuan. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
