
Americans get more than half their calories from ultraprocessed foods, CDC report says
Nutrition research has shown for years that ultraprocessed foods make up a big chunk of the U.S. diet, especially for kids and teens.
For the first time, however, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed those high levels of consumption, using dietary data collected from August 2021 to August 2023.
The report comes amid growing scrutiny of such foods by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who blames them for causing chronic disease.
'We are poisoning ourselves and it's coming principally from these ultraprocessed foods,' Kennedy told Fox News earlier this year.
Overall, about 55% of total calories consumed by Americans age 1 and older came from ultraprocessed foods during that period, according to the report. For adults, ultraprocessed foods made up about 53% of total calories consumed, but for kids through age 18, it was nearly 62%.
The top sources included burgers and sandwiches, sweet baked goods, savory snacks, pizza and sweetened drinks.
Young children consumed fewer calories from ultraprocessed foods than older kids, the report found. Adults 60 and older consumed fewer calories from those sources than younger adults. Low-income adults consumed more ultraprocessed foods than those with higher incomes.
The results were not surprising, said co-author Anne Williams, a CDC nutrition expert.
What was surprising was that consumption of ultraprocessed foods appeared to dip slightly over the past decade. Among adults, total calories from those sources fell from about 56% in 2013-2014 and from nearly 66% for kids in 2017-2018.
Williams said she couldn't speculate about the reason for the decline or whether consumption of less processed foods increased.
But Andrea Deierlein, a nutrition expert at New York University who was not involved in the research, suggested that there may be greater awareness of the potential harms of ultraprocessed foods.
'People are trying, at least in some populations, to decrease their intakes of these foods,' she said.
Concern over ultraprocessed foods' health effects has been growing for years, but finding solutions has been difficult. Many studies have linked them to obesity, diabetes and heart disease, but they haven't been able to prove that the foods directly cause those chronic health problems.
One small but influential study found that even when diets were matched for calories, sugar, fat, fiber and micronutrients, people consumed more calories and gained more weight when they ate ultraprocessed foods than when they ate minimally processed foods.
Research published this week in the journal Nature found that participants in a clinical trial lost twice as much weight when they ate minimally processed foods — such as pasta, chicken, fruits and vegetables — than ultraprocessed foods, even those matched for nutrition components and considered healthy, such as ready-to-heat frozen meals, protein bars and shakes.
Part of the problem is simply defining ultraprocessed foods.
The new CDC report used the most common definition based on the four-tier Nova system developed by Brazilian researchers that classifies foods according to the amount of processing they undergo. Such foods tend to be 'hyperpalatable, energy-dense, low in dietary fiber and contain little or no whole foods, while having high amounts of salt, sweeteners and unhealthy fats,' the CDC report said.
U.S. health officials recently said there are concerns over whether current definitions 'accurately capture' the range of foods that may affect health. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Agriculture Department recently issued a request for information to develop a new, uniform definition of ultraprocessed foods for products in the U.S. food supply.
In the meantime, Americans should try to reduce ultraprocessed foods in their daily diets, Deierlein said. For instance, instead of instant oatmeal that may contain added sugar, sodium, artificial colors and preservatives, use plain oats sweetened with honey or maple syrup. Read food packages and nutrition information, she suggested.
'I do think that there are less-processed options available for many foods,' she said.

CDC: Childhood Vaccination Rates Fell Further In 2024-2025 School Year
Childhood vaccination rates dropped even further for the 2024-2025 school year down to the lower 92% range with a record number of exemptions from vaccinations among kindergarteners, according to new data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Meanwhile, this year the U.S. has already experiencing the most measles cases and outbreaks that it's had in years with 1,333 and 29, respectively. Gee, do you think these things are somehow connected in any way? Well, the likely answer rhymes with the word 'mess.' Childhood Vaccination Rates Have Fallen To The 92% Range 'A mess' can describe what used to be a tidy public health situation. The newest CDC data shows that measles, mumps, rubella vaccination coverage among kindergarteners continued a downward trend. Rates have dropped from 95.2% in the 2019-2020 school year down to 92.7% in the 2023-2024 school year and even further to 92.5% this past school year. Coverage numbers for other vaccines have been going the wrong direction as well. Rates for the diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis vaccine otherwise known as the DTaP vaccine have fallen from 94.9% in 2019-2020 to 92.3% in 2023-2024 to 92.1% this past school year. Over the same time periods. the percentage of kids who got two doses of the varicella vaccine went from 94.8% to 92.3% to 92.1%. And coverage for the polio vaccine has gone from 95% to 92.7% to 92.5%. All of this has corresponded to a rise in the number of parents seeking exemptions from vaccinations for their children, going from 2.5% in the 2020-2021 schools year to 3.3% in 2023-24 to 3.6% in 2024-25. The U.S. basically had an all-time record number of such exemptions last school year with around 138,000 children getting them for at least one vaccine. And this isn't an issue in just a few states painted a certain political color. The majority of states (36 of them) in the U.S. as well as the District of Columbia had increases in exemptions from the previous. In fact, 17 states saw exemption rates that went above 5%. And which state do you think had the highest rate of exemptions? It rhymes with 'I don't know.' Idaho had the highest rate at a whopping 15.4% 2025 Has Already Had 1,333 Confirmed Measles Cases, 29 Outbreaks Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to go back in time when it comes to the measles. Measles outbreaks were very common before the arrival of the measles vaccine in the 1960s. Then over time as vaccination coverage increased, the threat of measles decreased. Once measles vaccination rates stayed above the herd immunity threshold of 95% for years, measles became rarer and rarer. That was because with such a large percentage of the population vaccinated, the measles virus had trouble finding unprotected humans to infect and treat like a cheap motel to reproduce and spread further. Eventually, the measles virus was effectively gone baby gone from the U.S., which declared measles eliminated in 2000. How quickly people forget, though. Since 2000, persistent misinformation and disinformation about the measles vaccine have helped erode MMR vaccination rates. Over the past decade, I've been writing more and more about measles cases and outbreaks, like this one, in the U.S. mainly because more and more measles cases and outbreaks have been occurring. I've written about I wrote in Forbes in 2019 about how anti-vaxxers made that year's World Health Organization's list of top ten global health threats All of this brings us to this year, which has been a great year if you are the measles virus. Not so great for many humans. As of July 29, there's already been a total of 1,333 confirmed measles cases across 40 jurisdictions, according to CDC data. Try to find the states that are not among the following that have had reported measles cases: Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City, New York State, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming. Oh, and measles is really contagious. Like really, really contagious. Among unvaccinated people, one case can easily lead to 12 to 18 more cases. About 87% of all reported measles cases this year have been part of outbreaks. This year has also already had 29 reported outbreaks, up from 16 in all of 2024. Lack Of More Urgent Action Dropping vaccination rates and rising measles cases and outbreaks should be more than a canary in a coal mine for the U.S. It should be a freaking elephant. We've essentially allowed a problem that was taken care of to return and potentially make America measle-ly again. Not only that. With other vaccination rates declining as well, we could see resurgences of other infectious disease as well, including polio. Things could be reversed if prompt actions are taken to get vaccination rates back up again before the different nasty microbes can spread too far in the U.S. population. But there doesn't seem to be an organized effort at the federal level to address these worsening problems. In fact, there are disturbing trends in the opposite direction such as the layoffs of personnel who were dedicated to help control infectious diseases, claims being made about vaccines that are unsupported by scientific evidence and cuts in funding for scientific research and public health efforts. The CDC website still has language about vaccination being simply a personal choice. But that simply is not the case. Since the percentage of people vaccinated affects the spread of viruses and other microbes, each person's decision to get vaccinated affects everyone else's risk of getting the disease. Therefore, having people around you not vaccinated against say the measles raises your risk of your risk of getting the measles, even if you yourself are already vaccinated against the measles. In other words, childhood vaccinations are not simply child's play.

Watching My Parents Die Convinced Me To Plan A Completely Different Path — And My Idea Came From A Movie
'I saw Dad's junk today. Good times!' 'You just made me spit out my coffee,' my sister texted back with a laughing-crying emoji. The mental image of Lisa doing a spit take at work was a small consolation for seeing my dad in this diminished state. No longer able to navigate a trip to the bathroom on his own, he'd ended up on the tile floor at 3 a.m. with his pajama pants bunched around his knees. He was too weak to get himself back to bed. Dad had entered hospice a few weeks before this episode because he was dying from a rare bone marrow cancer. He had only six weeks to live, and I'd flown across the country to be his in-home hospice caregiver. Lisa eventually joined me in Dad's house as co-caregiver. She saw his junk, too. Along with confirming that I would have made a lousy nurse, the experience raised a nagging question that would haunt me in the following years: With no kids of my own, who will take care of me when my time comes? When I first arrived in Michigan to help my dad, I didn't believe he would die in a little over a month. The man seemed fine, puttering around the house on his own and laughing with family during visits. There really wasn't much for me to do, other than to make sure he took his meds each morning and cook something for dinner before 'Jeopardy!' came on. But just as hospice predicted, Dad declined a little each week. He became fatigued and unsteady on his feet, requiring a walker and eating less and less of the food I prepared. His pain increased to the point where morphine was no longer up to the task, and the hospice nurse — who came to Dad's house just once a week for a quick check-in — asked me if I thought it was time for a fentanyl patch. 'I'm a magazine editor,' I thought. 'How the hell should I know?' One day, while I was pushing Dad around the living room in his wheelchair, he murmured, almost under his breath, 'I want to die.' I wanted that for him, too. Six years after my 74-year-old dad succumbed to his illness, I discovered that my mom had vascular dementia, and that she was already years into the disease. The realization blindsided me during an otherwise normal phone chat. Related: Related: Out of the blue, Mom said she wanted to tell me a secret: Someone named Lisa had been calling her, and she had no idea who this person was. Mom had been playing along during their conversations because she didn't want to offend the nice woman on the phone. With a shaky voice I explained that Lisa was her firstborn daughter. Mom sounded surprised, exclaiming, 'Really!' as if I'd told her that the neighborhood squirrels had just flown a nut-shaped rocket to the moon. With me in California, Lisa in Michigan and Mom living alone in South Carolina — she never remarried after divorcing my dad decades earlier — the situation required a whole other level of caregiving. The excruciating, long-distance kind. Two years of hell followed Mom's late diagnosis. Managing her care became a second job, made even more difficult by the fact that she had no financial resources and I had to raid my retirement savings to help pay for it. As Mom's dementia escalated, she sometimes called me several times a day in agitation and confusion, telling me about a mysterious and frightening man who'd somehow gotten into her apartment and was moving things around. Sometimes, she said, he left items there that were not hers. 'The man,' as she called him, did not exist; like many people with dementia, my mom suffered from hallucinations and delusions. We kept Mom in her apartment as long as possible, as she would have wanted, but in-home caregivers proved scarce and unreliable in her small town. She eventually got to the point of needing 24-hour care, costing almost $600 a day, and the agency we hired 50 miles away had only one person available in Mom's area. One weekend, when her regular caregiver couldn't come, a neighbor called to tell me that the agency had left Mom to fend for herself for the past two days, and that paramedics were on the scene. Lisa and I started making plans to get her out of there the next day. Mom was far better off in assisted living, though she wasn't always happy about her new accommodations. A fiercely private person all her life, she didn't understand why staff members kept coming into her room uninvited, pushing aside the assorted items she'd used to barricade the door and insisting she go down to the dining room for meals. I wouldn't have wanted to come out of my room, either; the facility was dated and depressing — but it was the best that Lisa and I could manage. At 78 years old, Mom was younger than most of the other residents there and among only a few who could walk around the place unassisted. Until she started falling. Related: In the span of a couple of months, she broke both hips and fractured her shoulder, confining her to a wheelchair. Immobility and subpar care led to a gruesome pressure wound on her foot that her depleted, 65-pound body could never heal. What kind of society insists on keeping a person alive in that condition? In her predementia days, my mom — always quick with a joke or a biting comment — would have said, 'Just get a gun and shoot me.' When Mom died last year, the day before Mother's Day, I cried with both sorrow at her unfair, horrible ending and with relief that it was finally over. Yet, the nagging question remained about my own uncertain future. Caring for my parents, I'd become increasingly obsessed with the idea that I was doomed to spend my final years in a dreary care facility surrounded by strangers, just waiting for the end to come. While I realize that having kids does not guarantee that they will someday take care of you, I also know that there is a zero percent chance that your nonexistent offspring will do it. This thought filled me with a crushing sense of fear and foreboding about getting older. That is, until I resolved to plan my own death. The idea surfaced gradually from some hidden cranny of my subconscious, reminding me of my favorite movie since high school: 'Harold and Maude.' In this 1971 dark comedy starring the great Ruth Gordon, a morbid young man falls in love with a free-spirited septuagenarian. In the film's climax, Maude carries out a long-held plan to end her life on her 80th birthday, on her own unconventional terms. Why shouldn't I be like Maude? At first, I thought my death would have to be a DIY affair. I knew that if I wasn't going to die from an incurable illness within six months, or if I had dementia, that would disqualify me from the 'medical aid in dying' options offered by a growing number of states. Though well intentioned, these programs are so mired in bureaucracy and restrictions that even patients who qualify often die while waiting for approvals. Advocacy groups like Death With Dignity are working to streamline and expand end-of-life options across the country, but the wheels turn slowly. And if you have dementia, like my mom, or just feel like you've had a good run after 90 years on the planet? No soup for you! Determining how to bring about a dignified, pain-free ending without medical help was a daunting prospect, so I began workshopping the idea — only half-joking — with friends. Would my college pal, an anesthesiologist, be willing to risk prison time to help me out? What kind of bribe money would I need to convince a veterinarian to do the deed? Then, in the months after my mom's death, an acquaintance recommended Amy Bloom's 'In Love: A Memoir of Love and Loss,' a heartbreaking book that chronicles the author's journey to Zurich to witness the assisted death of her husband, who'd been diagnosed with early Alzheimer's. Related: I was astonished to learn that, in Switzerland, assisted death has been legal for over 80 years. It's lawful as long as the person is of sound mind and is able to self-administer the life-ending pharmaceutical cocktail. Dignitas, a nonprofit that Bloom writes about in her memoir, requires that the individual have an illness that will eventually lead to death — including dementia — or be living with an unbearable disability. Another organization, Exit International, also lays out options for older adults and couples who want to go together. Exit's founder, Philip Nitschke, even invented a futuristic, 3D-printable pod designed to deliver a euphoric, painless death without the need for assistance. The third-generation prototype is still in the testing phase, but in the meantime, Nitschke's nonprofit offers an array of 'final exit' resources, including guides to life-ending drugs and assisted death programs in Switzerland. Though some may find it macabre, learning about organizations like Dignitas and Exit International has brought me an incredible sense of peace and comfort in knowing that I have options. Instead of feeling overwhelmed with constant dread of getting older, I can focus on living. Still, I can't help thinking about what will happen if I can't make it to Zurich when I feel like it's time to sign off. Wouldn't it be wonderful for Swiss-style options to be available here in the United States, and affordable to all? Then, those who decide to opt out could do so on their home turf surrounded by loved ones, without adding physical or financial burdens to the process. I realize that not everyone would welcome this. However, I believe that, like abortion, end-of-life decisions are a personal choice that should be made by the individual. If you don't believe in it, don't do it. And if the Swiss can avoid the so-called slippery slope for 80-plus years through tight regulation and documentation, the U.S. can figure it out, too. My husband of 22 years, my beloved companion on life's journey, says he isn't quite ready to sign up for the BOGO assisted-death special — a final date night, if you will — but a lot can happen in the next couple of decades. We could both expire well before the need for such a plan arises, or I could simply change my mind. It's enough for me to know that I need not be forced to keep living beyond my self-determined expiration date — even if I have to travel all the way to Switzerland to pull the plug. CDC Staffers Saw the Violence Coming
When gunfire pelted the Atlanta-based headquarters of the CDC yesterday, hundreds of employees were inside the campus's buildings. The experience was terrifying. But some of the employees were not particularly shocked. 'I'm actually surprised it didn't happen sooner,' a nearly 20-year veteran of the agency told me. (She, like others I spoke with for this article, requested anonymity out of fear of losing her job.) This was, in one sense, the first attack of its kind on the CDC. The shooter, whom law-enforcment officials have identified as Patrick Joseph White, a 30-year-old resident of an Atlanta suburb, was reportedly fixated on the idea that the COVID-19 vaccine had made him depressed and suicidal. No employees were injured by the bullets that entered the buildings, according to a CDC representative. But an Atlanta police officer named David Rose was shot and later died from his injuries. White, too, was found dead—fatally shot—at the scene. (It is not yet clear if his wound was self-inflicted or if he was killed by police.) When he took aim at the agency on Friday afternoon, he was near a corner where a lone man stands holding anti-vaccine signs nearly every day, several CDC staffers told me. In another sense, public-health workers have been facing escalating hostility since the early days of the pandemic. In 2020, armed protesters gathered on the Ohio Health Department director's front lawn, and the chief health officer of Orange County, California, was met with death threats after issuing a mask mandate. She had to hire extra security and was eventually driven to resign. Anthony Fauci, who served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases during the country's initial COVID response, has faced regular death threats since 2020. Nearly a third of state, local, and tribal public-health workers reported facing some sort of workplace violence in a 2021 survey. Last year, Fauci told CNN's Kaitlan Collins that threats of violence to public-health workers correlate with verbal attacks from high-profile politicians and media personalities. 'It's like clockwork,' he said. In the second Trump administration, those attacks have become commonplace—the very selling points, even, that have helped a number of Trump's health appointees gain their positions. In 2024, when announcing his own pick for CDC director, President Donald Trump maligned the CDC and other federal health agencies, accusing them of having 'engaged in censorship, data manipulation, and misinformation.' Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was already a longtime anti-vaccine activist when he took the mantle as America's health secretary; he has compared vaccinating children to the abuses of the Catholic church. During his own 2024 presidential run, he promised to 'clean up the cesspool of corruption at CDC.' 'Normally, threats to public servants aren't inspired from leadership of their own organization,' another CDC staffer said in a group chat among current and former employees. According to an MSNBC report, during an all-hands meeting today, CDC staff blamed the shooting at least partly on Kennedy's combative attitude toward the agency. 'We need them to stop fanning the flames of hatred against us, stop spreading misinformation,' one employee wrote in the meeting chat, naming Kennedy in the same comment. 'We will not be safe until they stop their attacks against us.' The shooter appears to have brought five guns to the scene, and at least four federal buildings were struck by dozens of bullets. In the hours immediately after the shooting, while many CDC employees remained barricaded in offices and marooned in conference rooms, they heard nothing from Kennedy or Trump. Last night, Susan Monarez, the newly confirmed CDC director, issued a short statement reiterating the basic facts of the shooting. 'We at CDC are heartbroken by today's attack on our Roybal Campus,' she wrote. 'Our top priority is the safety and well-being of everyone at CDC.' Late this morning, Kennedy sent an email to the entire staff of the Department of Health and Human Services offering support and prayers. In a post on X at around the same time, he wrote, 'No one should face violence while working to protect the health of others.' This evening, Monarez sent a more substantial email pledging to support the CDC during its recovery and noting its resilience. 'We have faced adversity before, and we will do so again, drawing strength from our shared commitment to public health,' she wrote. The president has not yet made a statement about the attack. (The White House and HHS did not respond to requests for comment.) To the CDC employees I spoke with, the sluggish response is the latest episode in the administration's escalating abandonment of the agency. Since January, the Trump administration has hit the CDC with massive layoffs, proposed halving its budget, and forced changes to internal policies governing the fundamentals of its scientific work. Earlier this year, Kennedy purged the committee that advises the CDC on vaccine recommendations. Just this week, he canceled nearly $500 million in federally funded research on mRNA vaccines —widely considered among CDC employees and public-health experts to be the greatest domestic triumph of the U.S. pandemic response—stating incorrectly that they cause more risk than benefit against the flu and COVID. For CDC staff, the wider threat does not seem to have passed. This evening, a group of CDC employees were trading tips on peeling off their old parking decals after the agency's security office reportedly asked staff to remove them from their cars. One person suggested covering them with other stickers; another recommended loosening them with cooking oil. Even people who have volunteered for risky missions in their public-health work are still getting used to the idea that the danger has arrived at the home front. 'I've put my life on the line for this agency, responding to outbreaks in some of the most dangerous parts of the world,' a 13-year veteran of the agency told me. 'I didn't expect to face the same risks at the Atlanta campus as I faced in South Sudan.'
