Iowa Baseball picks up portal commitment from talented outfielder

Iowa Baseball picks up portal commitment from talented outfielder As Iowa baseball retools its roster this offseason following a relatively promising 33-22-1 campaign this spring that eventually fell short of making the NCAA Tournament, the Hawkeyes got a commitment from former Wagner College outfielder Bryce Phelps in the transfer portal. The Denver, Iowa, native began his collegiate career at Southeastern Community College and spent each of the last two seasons with Wagner. As a junior for the Seahawks, Bryce appeared in 33 games, where he batted .195 over 177 at-bats, including 15 hits and eight RBIs. This past season, Phelps had a breakout campaign by starting 51 games and slashing a batting average of .399, an on-base percentage of .482, and a slugging percentage of .423, with 75 hits, 14 doubles, one home run, and 33 RBIs. Phelps' strikeout rate finished at just 11.7% in his 222 plate appearances and reached base via walk or hit by pitch in 14.0% of those appearances. With his impressive 2025 season at Wagner, Philips earned himself a spot on the First Team All-Northeast Conference list. '(It was) a combination of location, coaches, and teammates,' said Phelps in an interview with HawkeyeReport. 'Knowing that Iowa can be a place where I can go and compete with a bunch of guys that want to win, like my former Southeastern CC teammates Kooper Schulte and Caleb Wulf.' 'Just wanted to find the right fit at the highest level I could play at. The visit at Iowa was just as I remembered, felt like home. Having worked security at football games when I was at Southeastern Community College, I had a good feel for the outside of campus. Coach Heller and I had a great conversation. Talking about life, the program, and how I can fit in within the program as well. Talking to the coaches gave me the reassurance that I was wanted in the program. Having been recruited by them in high school and not working out I'm glad it circled back around.' As for where Philips could land in the Hawkeyes' lineup, he will have a chance to earn one of the corner outfield spots with centerfielder Miles Risley returning and Kellen Strohmeyer in line to earn the other corner position. Philips is just the third pickup for the Hawkeyes in the current transfer portal period, with Iowa likely to utilize the transfer pool as a valuable resource over the next few months while they patch up holes from their own departures. Gators land priority OF Jaden Bastian from transfer portal

Gators land priority OF Jaden Bastian from transfer portal Jacksonville center fielder Jaden Bastian has committed to the University of Florida baseball program, according to Baseball America's Jacob Rudner. Bastian is a five-tool talent that could start right away at Florida. He batted .302/.433/.552 and crushed fastballs as one of the ASUN's most dangerous hitters in 2025. Bastian hit 11 home runs and stole 36 bases, checking off the baserunning, power and speed boxes. He's held down center field at an elite level, too. He'll have to compete with Blake Cyr, Kyle Jones and Hayden Yost for a starting spot, but Bastian should contribute plenty. With Bastian and Jones now expected to make up two-thirds of the outfield, Florida has a chance to have one of the best groups in the country. It also gives the team some depth after injuries took out a chunk of the roster early on, including Jones. Florida Baseball 2025 Transfer Portal Movement Seven players have left Florida for the transfer portal this offseason. Left-handed sophomore Jacob Gomberg was the first to depart, followed by right-handers Alex Philpott (So.) and Carson Montsdeoca (Fr.). JUCO catcher Cole Bullen (Jr.) and right-handed freshmen Niko Janssens and Felix Ong made up the next wave of transfers. The most recent loss is freshman catcher Brock Clayton. Florida's early exit from the NCAA Tournament allowed Kevin O'Sullivan to make recruiting calls ahead of schedule, and the Gators have brought in four names. Notre Dame senior Ricky Reeth and UCF sophomore Russell Sandefer are the new right-handed arms, and JUCO catcher AJ Malzone rounds out the group headlined by Bastian. Arkansas vs Murray State highlights: Gage Wood throws no-hitter in College World Series

Arkansas vs Murray State highlights: Gage Wood throws no-hitter in College World Series Show Caption Hide Caption Arkansas' Gage Wood throws historic no-hitter in College World Series Arkansas' Gage Wood tosses the third no-hitter in Men's College World Series history as Arkansas tops Murray State. NCAA Out of 119 pitches, Arkansas' Gage Wood would only take one back. The Razorbacks' right-hander went seven innings without allowing a baserunner against Murray State on June 16, with the perfect game bid ultimately being broken up when Wood hit Dom Decker with a curveball that skipped off the top of Decker's foot in a 2-2 count. It wasn't a bad pitch. It was just the wrong one. Ultimately, Wood still made history. He threw the first College World Series no-hitter since 1960 and struck out a ridiculous 19 Racer hitters, all while living in the mid-to-high 90s for Arkansas. The gem was needed. Arkansas' potent offense was held in check by Isaac Silva, who allowed just one run and fanned seven of his own in six innings. Graham Kelham allowed two runs, resulting in a 3-0 win for Arkansas. The College World Series has seen the likes of Paul Skenes, Kumar Rocker, and Gerrit Cole. None of them managed to make lineups look as overmatched as Wood made Murray State look throughout the day. Ultimately, the result is that Arkansas lives to fight another day in the College World Series. But in the long run, Wood's performance is going to be remembered in the annals of College World Series history no matter how far Dave Van Horn's program goes this season. Arkansas will now play the loser of UCLA-LSU on June 17, as it looks for the first title in program history. USA TODAY Sports followed the game live. Catch up on Wood's historic performance below. Following his no-hitter, when he was asked how he was feeling, his response was succinct: "I shouldn't have hit that guy. That's all I have to say." The mind of a pitcher remains a scary place. Wood completes a no-hitter in a 19-strikeout performance to give Arkansas a 3-0 win over Murray State in the CWS elimination game. Wood loses his perfect game, but strikes out two more hitters in the eighth inning and has 16 now. Wood loses his perfect game in the bottom of the eighth inning when he hits Murray State's Dom Decker. Wood strikes out his 14th hitter of the game and then induces two groundball outs to get through the seventh without allowing a base runner. His strikeouts are a career high and the most for Arkansas in an NCAA Tournament game. Dustin Mercer drops a low flyball and allows another Arkansas run to score. It's 3-0 Razorbacks in the top of the seventh inning. Wehiwa Aloy doubles down the third base line to score Justin Thomas Jr., who led off the inning with a single. He's at six strikeouts through three innings. Wood's offense got him one run in the top of the inning and that may be all he needs. Following his RBI single, Charles Davalan stole second to give Arkansas runners on second and third with zero outs. However, Isaac Silva retired Wehiwa Aloy, Logan Maxwell and Ryder Helfrick to escape the inning. Silva struck out Helfrick to end the inning. To his credit, Aloy hit a liner 110.5 mph off the bat, but it was hit right to Conner Cunningham, who made a nice snag. Arkansas has three straight hits to open the third inning, including an RBI single to left field for Charles Davalan to give the Razorbacks an early 1-0 lead.
