Over 100 anglers compete in Al Mughira Grand Kingfish Championship for Women
ABU DHABI (WAM)Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler's Representative in the Al Dhafra Region, the Al Mughira Grand Kingfish Championship for Women commenced on Friday, May 2, 2025, as part of the Abu Dhabi Grand Kingfish Championship series 2024 - 2025.Organised by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club, the competition took place from three main locations: Abu Dhabi, Al Mirfa, and Delma Island.The Championship will witness the participation of 105 anglers from 12 nationalities, who will compete for total cash prizes valued up to Dh800,000.
Organisers said the event reflects Abu Dhabi's vision to preserve the UAE's marine heritage and promote sustainable heritage sports, noting that dedicating the Championship to women comes in appreciation of their active role in society and various fields.

Points for LIV Golf events are awarded as follows: winner 40, second 30, third 24, scaling down to one point for places 21st–24th. While Niemann remains favourite, Rahm, still chasing his first individual title of the season, cannot be counted out. The season-long prize fund for the top three is $18 million, $12 million, and $4 million, respectively, making every shot in Indianapolis crucial. The LIV Golf Zones Lock Zone (Top 24): Dubai-based Adrian Meronk (Cleeks GC) and Anirban Lahiri (Crushers GC) sit in 19th and 23rd place. Tyrrell Hatton (Legion XIII) has slipped to 25th. Drop Zone (49th and below): Mito Pereira (Torque GC), Andy Ogletree (HyFlyers GC), Ian Poulter (Majestics GC), Yubin Jang (Iron Heads GC), and Frederick Kjettrup (Cleeks GC) are in danger of relegation — a career-defining prospect. German Mueller signs season-long deal with Vancouver Whitecaps
Former Germany and Bayern Munich forward Thomas Mueller has signed a season-long deal with Major League Soccer (MLS) side Vancouver Whitecaps, the Canadian club said on Wednesday Mueller, who turns 36 next month, decided to leave Bayern at the end of last season after 25 years with the German champions, helping them win 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies. Mueller has signed for the rest of the 2025 season, with the club holding an option to keep him in 2026 as a Designated Player -- a status that allows MLS teams to pay top salaries outside the league's salary cap. "I'm looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship," Mueller said in a statement. "I've heard great things about the city, but first and foremost I'm coming to win." "This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership-- a transformative moment for our club and our city. We are proud to welcome Thomas to Vancouver," Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster said. Mueller made 131 appearances for Germany, scoring 45 goals, and was instrumental in their 2014 World Cup triumph. He scored 250 goals and registered 276 assists from 756 appearances for Bayern across all competitions. The playmaker helped Bayern reach the Club World Cup quarterfinals in the United States last month, where they lost to eventual runners-up Paris St Germain. UAE's Commando Group take top honours in Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship
The curtain came down on the inaugural edition of the Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship, held over three days at ADNEC Centre Al Ain, on Sunday. Emirati clubs delivered a powerful statement, sweeping the top three positions in the championship. Organised by International Vision Sports Management (IVSM), the championship featured thrilling matches and high-level competition, drawing a large crowd and more than 1,000 athletes from over 60 countries to the Al Ain Region. The final day saw the culmination of professional category matches, with standout performances energising the crowd. The UAE's Commando Group topped the standings in the division, followed by ADMA International in second place and M.O.D UAE in third. Winners were awarded medals and cash prizes at the conclusion of the event. Pouya Rahmani of Team Nogueira Dubai, who won gold in the Men's Grappling / 18+ / Professionals (125kg division), said: 'I feel amazing. This is my first world title in grappling as a black belt, and it means a lot to me. It's been a long journey, and finally winning this medal is incredibly satisfying. My final match was against Haitham Redha. I lost to him the last time, and he's a strong fighter, but I managed to take the victory this time. Thank you, Abu Dhabi. Thank you, Al Ain.' Caroline Vinhaes of Piramide Grappling Association, who claimed gold in the Women's 18+ / Professionals (55kg division), added: 'I really enjoyed the championship. It is amazing to have a tournament dedicated specifically to grappling. Everything about the experience has been outstanding, from the organisation to the number of participants and the way we were treated throughout. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back and competing again.' Over the course of three days, the championship featured competitions across the professional, masters, amateur and youth categories.
