‘Still #1'? UCLA and UC Berkeley spark social media war over college rankings
The rivalry reignited after U.S. News & World Report released its global university rankings last month. UC Berkeley emerged as the highest-ranked U.S. public institution on that list, placing No. 6 overall — just behind elite private schools such as Harvard, MIT and Stanford.
Berkeley wasted no time capitalizing on the moment. Its social media accounts lit up with posts declaring the school '#1 public,' featuring a dancing Oski the Bear and the hashtag '#HolyAirBall,' a playful meme referencing underestimation.
Not to be outshone, UCLA clapped back days later.
'Still #1,' the Bruins proclaimed in posts citing U.S. News' national undergraduate rankings from last September, where UCLA has claimed the top public spot for eight consecutive years.
The friendly fire quickly escalated into an all-out comment war among alumni and fans, with Reddit threads dissecting the rankings and Instagram flooded with Bear and Bruin emojis.
Even university leaders stepped in.
"We admire UCLA's eagerness to take a single ranking for its undergraduate program and use it for all it is worth,' Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons said in a statement to the Chronicle on Monday. 'We know how challenging a sibling rivalry can be for the younger sibling. Go Bears (and Bruins).'
Mary Osako, UCLA's vice chancellor for strategic communications, sounded a similar note.
'Bruins everywhere love celebrating our No. 1 ranking — we've been diligently doing so for 8 years, but who's counting?' she said in a statement to the Chronicle. 'Our playful banter may have ruffled a few (golden) feathers. UCLA and Cal are both top public universities that are changing the world for the better. Bruin or Bear, we can all be proud of that.'
Beneath the snark lies a murkier reality: The two rankings rely on very different methodologies.
The global list emphasizes academic research and reputation, while the national one focuses on student outcomes, such as graduation rates and social mobility.
In other rankings — from Forbes to the Wall Street Journal — Berkeley often comes out ahead, particularly in measures related to research output and graduate earnings. Still, UCLA consistently shines in undergraduate-focused metrics, and the two schools frequently trade positions or tie.
'There are many rankings, each has a slightly different focus, and each with its own source of noise,' Lyons said, noting that he keeps the rankings table in his coat pocket every day.

Jalyx Hunt sends inspiring message ahead of Eagles training camp
Jalyx Hunt isn't letting last year's success affect his mindset Eagles sack Mahomes on back to back plays!📺: #SBLIX on FOX📱: Tubi + NFL app This time last year, Jalyx Hunt was preparing for his rookie season with the Eagles. He had the benefit of learning behind veterans Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat while absorbing information from defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Philadelphia is transitioning to a new era of pass-rushers in 2025. With the departures of Graham (retirement) and Sweat (free agency), Hunt and former first-round pick Nolan Smith will need to step up in their place. "Hurting my heart," Hunt said via The Philadelphia Inquirer about losing teammates. "This is the business part that everybody talks about. So, this is my first time experiencing it. I'm going through the throes of it right now." After being a healthy scratch Week 1 in Brazil, Hunt saw more playing time as the 2024 season progressed. He played in at least 17 defensive snaps in each of the final eight regular-season games and broke out during the playoffs en route to a Super Bowl title. Championships are hard to come by, let alone in your rookie season. The early success could easily lead young players to develop a sense of superiority. Not the 24-year-old Hunt. When the Eagles were presented with their Super Bowl rings on Friday night, Hunt posted an Instagram story captioned: "This doesn't matter in 4 days." Four days from that night is July 22nd — the day Eagles players report for training camp. Hunt's mindset is a reflection of Nick Sirianni's message this offseason: don't get caught up in the Super Bowl high. "Every time we talk about it, talking about this topic, we're talking about sustained success," Sirianni said, per NBC Philadelphia. "I think they understand what that is. A lot of these guys have had sustained success, right? They know it's not anything they've done in their past, and it's not them looking forward to the future. It's about being where they are right now. I think that's kind of our daily message with them." Hunt enters camp with a leg up thanks to a full season in Fangio's system, but he'll still need to outperform newcomers Azeez Ojulari and Josh Uche to secure a starting role. One thing is for certain: heightened expectations won't change his process in Year 2. "I'm going to do what I did last year," Hunt said. "Just put my head down, work, study some more film, ask more questions. I feel as if I can ask better questions now that I know a little bit more about the position and I've played and I've got some experience at it. Just ask my butt off. Work my butt off."

Ilona Maher Slams Kate Moss's Toxic Diet Culture Quote
In recent months, Ilona Maher has won praise for her honest comments on body image and acceptance. When she featured in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue earlier this year, the 28-year-old rugby player — who won bronze with the US at the 2024 Olympics — quickly made it known that her journey to self-love wasn't necessarily an easy one. 'Thank you to @si_swimsuit for once again letting me showcase my strong, powerful body and for making me feel so beautiful,' she wrote on Instagram. 'For young Ilona wearing a bikini was once unthinkable but now I'd actually prefer to be prancing around in one. Stay sexy, folks.' And after walking in a swimsuit at the Miami Swim Show last month, Ilona had the perfect response when asked if it was 'tough.' She said, 'I love it. I love showing my body. I love showing what this body has done for me…I think other girls seeing that, and feeling like, 'Oh my gosh, I look like her, I have the frame of her' not only has helped me and made me feel more confident, I think it helps others.' The athlete won praise from fans who found her comment super refreshing, especially following years of toxic diet culture. And more recently, Ilona directly addressed said diet culture in a candid TikTok, during which she perfectly discredited Kate Moss's regrettably infamous quote from the '00s: 'Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.' 'Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels… Uh, y'all tried being strong?' Ilona said as she flexed her muscles. 'I feel good, I feel well fed. I feel ready to take on anybody.' 'You guys gotta try this shit, it is a different level,' she said. 'I love it.' Ilona then added, 'Also, have you guys tasted tiramisu? Because… my God.' Reacting to the TikTok, several Reddit users praised Ilona for her refreshing take. 'What a queen. I am so grateful to have a role model like her, wish my high school self could've seen this. It makes me want to cry, it would have flipped a switch in my brain,' one person said. Love to see it.
