The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has recently confirmed that nearly 78 per cent of all new Pension Credit claims are processed - from the initial application to the award decision letter - within the target timeframe of 50 working days (10 weeks). This means that older people on a low income, particularly those living alone, could receive their first payment and any arrears by mid-October if they make a new claim this month.
Despite the full New State Pension now being worth £230.25 per week and the full Basic State Pension worth £176.45, data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals that in 2021, approximately 3.3 million people aged 65 years and over were living alone in England and Wales.
It's vital for all older people - whether single, married or cohabiting - to ensure they are claiming all the additional financial support they are entitled to this year to help boost their income and offset the ongoing impact of the cost of living.
Pension Credit is the most under-claimed benefit and is specifically designed to provide additional financial support for older people on a low income - both singles and couples. Nearly 1.4 million older people across Great Britain are currently receiving this means-tested benefit that could provide an average of £4,300 in extra support during the coming months.
Some elderly individuals mistakenly think that owning their property or having savings disqualifies them from the means-tested benefit, which can also offer help with housing costs, heating bills and Council Tax, according to the Daily Record, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Who qualifies for Pension Credit?
Pension Credit comes in two types: Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit. To be eligible for Guarantee Pension Credit, you must have reached State Pension age (currently 66).
Your weekly income should be less than the minimum amount the UK Government considers necessary for living. This minimum is set at £227.10 for single people and £346.60 for couples.
You have qualifying income of at least £198.27 a week for a single person and £314.34 a week for a couple
You reached State Pension age before April 6, 2016, or you have a partner who reached State Pension age before this date and was already receiving it
Guarantee Credit boosts your weekly income to a certain level. You might qualify for more if you're disabled, a carer, or have specific housing costs.
Savings Credit can provide up to a certain amount. The exact sum you'll receive depends on your income and savings.
Any income from savings and capital over £10,000 is taken into account.

Dad buys £6 jacket from charity shop and is blown away when son checks pocket
Dad buys £6 jacket from charity shop and is blown away when son checks pocket 'My son has been on the search for the perfect leather jacket for months now' Stock image of man in charity shop (Image: Getty Images) A dad was stunned by what he found in his pocket after a charity shop visit. The shopper posted on social media that he made the discovery after buying a $7.99 (£5.89) leather jacket for his son. In a 2022 Reddit post that has been doing the rounds online this week, the father wrote: "My son has been on the search for the perfect leather jacket for months now. Every Goodwill we go to he wanders off looking for the perfect leather jacket and comes up empty-handed or it's just not quite right. "But while on vacation in Flagstaff, Arizona, this weekend, we naturally stop at our favourite store, the Goodwill, and he goes on his search for his jacket and I go skipping off to the knick-knacks. "Then about four minutes later he comes running, 'Papa! Papa! I found the one! I found the one!' And for $7.99 of course I get him his jacket that he's been on a endless search for, for what I imagine seems like decades to an eight-year-old. "He even said I 'changed' his life... I really don't know what his obsession with the leather jacket is, but hey again for $7.99 I am now a life changer! Well at least for today, we all know how that goes. "So we purchased the jacket and tucked it in the boot and went on with our holiday." Article continues below As soon as they reached their holiday home, the boy began inspecting his new jacket, then headed upstairs to try it on in front of the mirror, the Manchester Evening News reports. The dad wrote: "I hear 'PAPA! PAPA! I found credit cards in my jacket!' I was thinking 'WTF' and he comes running down and shows me four gift cards with $10 values on them and I'll be damned they are all loaded! $40 in Subway gift cards! "So he's totally excited and offers to buy everyone dinner and now I'm absolutely thrilled that means Papa hasn't got to cook tonight." One Reddit user responded: "That is a very cool jacket, too." Another wrote: "Papa is way cooler though." Another comment read: "I once thrifted a leather jacket for 7 dollars that had 13 dollars in the pocket, congrats, that is awesome." "Most wholesome story, ever!" wrote another. "Remind me of mine when they were that age. At eight they loved thrifting and selecting things they loved. Got tears in my eyes, they're now nearly 15." Millions on benefits and Universal Credit to get EXTRA payment before the end of the year – are you eligible?
Plus, we share the exact bank statement to look out for to see if the cash has been deposited CASH IN Millions on benefits and Universal Credit to get EXTRA payment before the end of the year – are you eligible? Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MILLIONS on benefits and Universal Credit will get extra payment before the end of the year. The free cash, often referred to as the benefits Christmas bonus, is paid to eligible households to help provide extra financial support over the holiday period. 1 The DWP pays a Christmas bonus to claimants at the end of every year Credit: Getty The bonus was first introduced in 1972 and hasn't risen in value since then. If the payment had risen in line with inflation it would now be worth £118.69, which would be enough to cover the cost of a Christmas shop for the family. However, £10 these days doesn't stretch very far, and would likely only cover the cost of a few items in a grocery store. Sarah Coles, head of personal finance at Hargreaves Lansdown, said the figure has fallen so far behind inflation that it's "now the kind of sum that the kids of better off families might find tucked into a Christmas card". "If you're facing Christmas on a tight budget, the earlier you can start preparing for it, the better." She added: "Some people will buy presents throughout the year, whereas others will put something aside each month into an easy access savings account." "It's not always easy to free up the cash, but you'll be glad you managed it when you're faced with the eye-watering cost of Christmas." Meanwhile, Evan John, Policy Advisor at the national disability charity Sense, said the bonus is "another example of successive governments demonstrating they don't really understand the huge extra costs of being disabled". He added: "The cost of living has spiralled for disabled people over recent years. "Many have no choice but to use extra energy to power feeding machines or hoists - and energy costs have risen in recent years, alongside the ever-increasing prices of specialist foods and therapies." Cost of Living payment updates — Thousands have just days to claim free £300 DWP cash A Government spokesperson said: "This Government is determined to change people's lives for the better, helping them out of poverty so they do not need to rely on crisis support. 'That's why we are fixing the broken welfare system we inherited, so it genuinely supports those who can work into employment while ensuring there is always a safety net for the most vulnerable. 'We have also raised the national living wage, increased benefits, and given additional help to the poorest households as part of our Plan for Change.' How do I claim the DWP Christmas bonus? Anyone who is eligible to claim the bonus does not need to apply and will be paid automatically. If you are not sure if you have received the payment before, check on your bank statements for a code which says "DWP XB". To get the money you usually need to be claiming benefits before the qualifying week, which is typically the first week of December. The full list of benefits which make you eligible for the bonus include: Adult Disability Payment Armed Forces Independence Payment Attendance Allowance Carer's Allowance Carer Support Payment Child Disability Payment Constant Attendance Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes) Contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance (once the main phase of the benefit is entered after the first 13 weeks of claim) Disability Living Allowance Incapacity Benefit at the long-term rate Industrial Death Benefit (for widows or widowers) Mobility Supplement Pension Age Disability Payment Pension Credit - the guarantee element Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance (SADLA) Severe Disablement Allowance (transitionally protected) State Pension (including Graduated Retirement Benefit) Unemployability Supplement or Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes) War Disablement Pension at State Pension age War Widow's Pension Widowed Mother's Allowance Widowed Parent's Allowance Widow's Pension If you think that you qualify but don't receive the payment automatically you should contact your local Jobcentre Plus or Pension Centre. Support if you are struggling If you are struggling there are ways to get financial support. For example, cash-strapped families can get access to money through the Household Support Fund (HSF). The scheme has been extended multiple times with the latest round running between April 2025 and March 2026. Each council in England has been allocated a share of the £742million fund and can distribute it to residents in need. Eligibility criteria varies based on where you live but usually help is offered to those on benefits or a low income. For example, households in North Northamptonshire can apply for supermarket vouchers worth up to £320. Elsewhere, households in Wealden District Council can apply for free cash worth £200.

Four streaming services you can watch without a TV licence
If you only watch television on these platforms you don't need to pay £174.50 a year for a licence. People who watch TV on certain streaming platforms could be exempt from paying for an annual BBC TV licence. Those who only use four specific services do not have to pay the yearly fee of £174.50. The licence fee has been a standard yearly cost for many UK residents since it was introduced in 1946. Back then, the BBC was the sole broadcaster in the country, and the licence was priced at £2, which is roughly equivalent to about £105 in today's money. Despite significant changes in television, including the emergence of multiple channels, streaming services, and on-demand platforms, this charge remains. However, from April 1 this year, the cost was set at £174.50. This was an increase from £169.50. The licence applies to households that: Watch or record programmes as they're being broadcast live on any TV channel Watch live programmes on any online TV service - such as Channel 4, YouTube, or Amazon Prime Video It's also necessary if you download or watch any BBC programmes on BBC iPlayer. If you need a licence and don't pay for one, you could face a fine of up to £1,000. However, there are some lesser-known situations where a licence isn't required. This includes cases where your TV is used exclusively for watching shows via Netflix, Disney Plus, Channel 4's on demand service (formerly known as All 4), and Amazon Prime Video. However, as previously mentioned, a licence is necessary to view live content on these platforms. On the other hand, you don't need a licence to watch videos on websites like YouTube, or DVDs. Other situations a licence isn't required According to if you're a student living at another address outside of term time that already has a licence, you don't need an additional one. You can use that TV licence while at university on any device that's: Powered by battery Not plugged in Not connected to an aerial Moreover, if you live in a shared house that already has a licence, there's no need for you to buy your own TV licence. A single TV licence can cover the entire household if you either: Watch TV in a communal area Have a joint tenancy agreement Additional exemptions and discounts Certain people are also exempt from paying for a TV licence or qualify for a discounted rate. The Government website indicates that you can get a free TV licence if you're 75 or older and you either: Receive Pension Credit Live with a partner who receives Pension Credit If you're currently receiving Pension Credit, you can apply for a free TV licence when you turn 74. However, you'll need to continue paying for your licence until the end of the month before your 75th birthday. If you're living in a residential care home or sheltered accommodation, you may be eligible for a discount. Residents of qualifying residential care homes, supported housing or sheltered accommodation can obtain a TV licence for just £7.50. To be eligible, you must also be: Either retired and over 60 Or disabled Your housing manager can verify your eligibility and apply on your behalf. If you're registered as blind, or severely sight impaired, or live with someone who is, you can benefit from a 50 per cent discount. The licence must be registered in the name of the blind person - if it's not, a new application can be made to transfer it into their name. For more information, visit the Government website here.
