Mock crash shows dangers of distracted, impaired driving

Yahoo04-04-2025
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A crash was staged to show students at Campus High School the dangers of driving distracted or under the influence on Thursday.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office and county fire crews worked with students to make the scenes seem lifelike to reinforce dangers.
'I mean, losing someone, losing a classmate, someone very dear to us, it's always important that we know what we're doing out on the roads,' said Serenity Hinton-Boone, student.
'That was another reason we had brought the hearse and the casket onto the scene so we could show them more, this is the outcome,' said Joshua Wells, Campus High School FCCLA.
The event was part of the competition for Family Career and Community Leaders of America, focusing on community safety.

Boone County car accident allegedly caused by ‘tall corn' kills one person

A fatal car crash in Boone County was allegedly caused by "tall corn" obstructing the sightlines of an "uncontrolled" intersection. Bobby Rodriguez, 55, of Waukee, was killed on Saturday, Aug. 9 when his Honda SXS collided with Wayne Reinhart's Chevrolet Silverado as the pair entered the I Avenue and 280th Street intersection south of Ogden. Two passengers in the Honda, Susan Rodriguez, 40, of Waukee, and a nine-year-old, were injured and life-flighted to Methodist hospital. Reinhart, 74, Alleman, did not report an injury. More: Ames' new soccer field, 'The Friedrich Pitch,' is open. What you should know before playing: According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, Reinhart was traveling east on 280th Street while Bobby Rodriguez was northbound on I Avenue when their vehicles entered the intersection just before 3:45 p.m. The crash report says each driver's view was blocked by the tall corn when they collided, eventually coming to rest in a bean field on the northwest corner of the intersection. Bobby Rodriguez and the two passengers in his car were wearing seatbelts, according to the State Patrol report. The theft occurred on July 16 as the church was experiencing the worst of the summer heat. The pastor said the theft is a huge loss. 'Some people that are in wheelchairs and stuff like that, this is a lot more for them to try to get over here too to the service and like yesterday we had to have a funeral for one of our members at another church simply because our church was not available,' Pastor Willard Dallas said. Flooding possible through early Monday The church filed a police report for the theft, but it is not confident the units will be recovered. Dillard says the church has raised thousands with the help of individuals to replace the units. The church has set up a GoFundMe to help with the replacement of the units. ‘Cool guy': 80s rockstar pulled over in Kansas en route to show

KIOWA COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — Sheriff's deputies in Kansas made an unexpected traffic stop on Friday when they pulled over a vehicle carrying none other than 1980s pop-rock icon John Waite and his band. Sgt. Justin Rugg conducted the stop as the group was headed to Dodge City for a performance at United Wireless Arena. A longtime fan, Rugg couldn't hide his excitement. Chiefs' tight end Travis Kelce makes shirtless cameo in 'Happy Gilmore 2' 'I'm not even on cloud nine, I'm on like cloud 12,' Rugg said after meeting the English rock singer, best known for hits like 'Missing You' and 'When I See You Smile.' The Kiowa County Sheriff's Office shared the encounter in a lighthearted social media post, calling Waite a 'cool guy' and thanking him for taking a photo with the sergeant. On his official Facebook page, Waite said they were 'pulled over for speeding' and called Rugg a 'good guy cop.' Waite's band continued on their way, with deputies wishing them a 'rockin' time.' His career began in the 1970s when he became the bassist and lead vocalist for The Babys, which later disbanded after Waite was 'pulled from the stage by an overzealous fan during an encore.' According to his website, Waite 'seriously injured his knee' in the incident. Waite went on to launch a solo career through the 1980s before forming Bad English with former bandmates of The Babys, Jonathan Cain and Ricky Phillips; Journey guitarist Neal Schon; and drummer Deen Castronovo. The group would break up a few years later, relaunching Waite's solo efforts.
