Dog with suspected rabies bites 13 people in Indapur

1 2 Pune: The Saturday morning incident in Indapur town where a stray dog with suspected rabies went on a rampage biting 13 people in the busy college area exposed the shortcomings of the local sub-district hospital which does not have stock of the critical anti-rabies serum (ARS) for the last four months. There was panic in the neighbourhood along the Pune–Solapur highway and the injured — including students, senior citizens and passers-by — that were bleeding profusely were rushed to the Indapur sub-district hospital, which only had primary vaccination. Patients were advised to seek treatment at Baramati or in private hospitals. There was widespread chaos and resentment among the citizens. Victim Pandurang Shinde said, "It shows how ill-prepared such govt hospitals are. Why would people go there even in emergency situations? The incident highlights the hospital administration's sheer negligence." Tanaji Shewale, another one of the victims, raised questions about the hospital's apathy. "It shows the hospital administration's irresponsible attitude. How can they not have stock of such a serum? We had to travel to Baramati in that situation." District civil surgeon Dr Nagnath Yampalle told TOI that the vaccine was not available for the last few months and the sub-district hospital had recently been permitted to procure it from the patient welfare fund. "In the Indapur case, unfortunately, we didn't have ARS at the critical moment. Hence, the hospital superintendent had to advise the injured to reach out to the Baramati hospital. However, the superintendent could have purchased the ARS from local medical shops for the emergency," he added. Superintendent of the Indapur sub-district hospital Dr Siddharth Nampalli said they did not procure the vaccine because bills submitted for such purchases were often not cleared in time. The district has 20 sub-district hospitals across 13 tehsils and all are supposed to stock crucial vaccines and serums, including ARS, as dog bites are reported regularly. Yampalle said, "We get at least 700 cases of dog bites every month. The number is quite high. Therefore, our hospitals have enough stock of anti-rabies vaccine. But people bitten by a rabid dog have to be administered ARS. Even in a wildlife case, such as a leopard bite, we have to give ARS." The district surgeon said they would supply ARS to tehsil hospitals within a week. Meanwhile, the Indapur municipal council staff captured and neutralised the dog with suspected rabies, bringing relief to residents. Nonetheless, locals slammed the hospital's failure, calling it a serious lapse which had endangered lives. Meanwhile, Yampalle further said, "According to our procedures, we cannot confirm whether the dog is affected by rabies. A dog with rabies shows symptoms such as hydrophobia and typically dies within a few days. We will determine the dog's actual health status over the next few days. Also, healthy dogs usually do not bite multiple people." Villagers have urged local representatives, including state agriculture minister and local MLA Dattatray Bharane, to intervene and ensure uninterrupted ARS supply. Mohali rehab centre packed, admn scouts for new facility

Mohali: With the district's sole government de-addiction centre in Sector 66 filled to capacity, Mohali administration has started searching for an additional facility to house drug addicts being brought in as part of the ongoing anti-drug drive in the state. Officials from the district administration recently inspected the civil hospital in Phase 6, where a ward on the fourth floor is being considered for conversion into a temporary de-addiction centre. Authorities said that if implemented, the ward would require heavy security arrangements — similar to a jail — to prevent inmates from escaping. The demand for additional accommodation grew over the past week after the 100-bed de-addiction centre in Sector 66 reported that it could no longer take in more patients. Earlier this year, its capacity was increased from 70 to 100 beds as part of the state government's intensified "War against drugs" campaign. Under this drive, police are arresting drug smugglers and detaining drug users, who are sent to de-addiction centres for treatment instead of prison. The Sector 66 facility has been operating under strict surveillance ever since an incident two months ago, when 24 inmates escaped after breaking a window during a storm-induced power outage. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Following the incident, permanent police deployment was sanctioned at the centre. Iron grills were fixed on windows and the number of security guards was increased, effectively turning the ward into a high-security barrack. Officials now fear that the proposed facility at the civil hospital may also require similar iron grills and continuous police presence if it has to house addicts brought in forcibly by the police. With the Sector 66 centre overflowing and inflow of patients rising steadily under the anti-drug campaign, officials say expansion of capacity is urgent. A final decision on shifting a ward in the civil hospital is expected soon after the submission of a security feasibility report. BOX: Drive against addiction intensifies Under the ongoing crackdown, suspected drug users are subjected to dope tests and, if found positive, booked under the NDPS Act. Instead of being sent to jail, they are admitted to the government de-addiction centre for medical rehabilitation and are released only after completing treatment.
