Oklahoma's Jase Summy wins Western Amateur in record fashion, earns likely Walker Cup spot

There wasn't much doubt before the Western Amateur, but Jase Summy made sure he's going to be on the U.S. Walker Cup team next month at Cypress Point in California. Summy, a rising senior at Oklahoma, won a Bedlam final Saturday at Skokie Country Club outside of Chicago, topping Oklahoma State rising junior Ethan Fang 6-and-5 to win the Western Amateur. Summy, ranked ninth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, took down the world's third-ranked amateur, who earlier this summer won the British Amateur and is already on the Walker Cup team. While the win didn't officially give Summy a spot on the team, he's a shoo-in to be selected after the conclusion of the U.S. Amateur, which begins Monday, Aug. 11 at Olympic Club in San Francisco. 'This is the biggest win of my life – by far,' Summy said. 'I knew my game was there, but I hadn't quite broken through. Today, I did.' 'That was definitely the biggest crowd I've played in front of. My game had been trending well. It was just about execution. I felt confident coming in, and that carried through the week.' Summy's win was the largest margin of victory in the history of the championship, and he also earned an exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour's 2026 NV5 Invitational. He won the second and third holes, and while Fang won the sixth to get back to 1 down, Summy dominated from there. He won Nos. 8-10 and then 12-13 to close out the match. Summy became the first Sooner to win the Western Amateur since Charlie Coe in 1950. And now, Summy turns his attention to the U.S. Amateur, with an all-but-likely invitation to the Walker Cup team waiting come the conclusion of the biggest amateur event in the world.

Tiger Woods' Son, Charlie, Wraps Up Successful Junior PGA Despite Missing Team USA Chance

Tiger Woods' son, Charlie, couldn't come close to the level he had shown the day before and dropped seven spots on the Junior PGA Championship leaderboard. His final score for the event was 9-under 276, finishing tied for ninth. Charlie had made two birdies and two bogeys up to the 13th hole, but the worst came later. The young Woods carded a bogey and double bogey on the 14th and 15th, respectively, to completely seal his fate for the round and the event. Still, a top-10 finish in this tournament is one of the most significant results of his young golf career. Charlie, who started the fourth round tied for second, failed to secure one of the two spots for the team that will compete in the Junior Ryder Cup. The system established by the PGA of America grants direct qualification to the top two finishers in the Junior PGA Championship. Charlie Woods of the United States hits a shot in the fairway on the18th hole during the first round of the U.S. Junior Amateur at Brook Hollow Golf Club on July 21, 2025 in Dallas, Texas. MoreHis result at this event gave Charlie 80 points toward the Junior Ryder Cup team's qualifying ranking, bringing his total to 455. This will allow him to move up a few places in the rankings, but he'll be out of reach of the top two, who also earn a spot on the team. Charlie still has a chance to be selected by captain Suzy Whaley as the sixth boy member of the team. He will certainly face stiff competition in this regard, as he has approximately seven players ranked higher on the Junior Ryder Cup points list. However, Charlie has as strong a case as anyone else, as he has one win this season unlike the aforementioned seven players. Another detail is that two of those seven players tied with Charlie in the Junior PGA Championship, but none finished better than him. Lunden Esterline cruised through the fourth round to comfortably win the Boys Junior PGA Championship with a six-stroke lead. As for the girls, Asterisk Talley confirmed her favored status and won with a score of 12-under, one stroke ahead of Zoe Cusack. Both also secured their spots on the Junior Ryder Cup team. Charlie Woods Inches Closer To Junior Ryder Cup With Performance at PGA

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Tiger Woods' son, Charlie, carded another superb round on Thursday to move into a tie for second place at the Junior PGA Championship with just 18 holes remaining. The younger Woods now has his sights set not only on winning the biggest title of his young career but also on the chance to make his debut defending the red, white, and blue. The top two finishers at the Junior PGA Championship automatically qualify for the American team for the Junior Ryder Cup, which will be played Sept. 23-25 at Nassau Country Club and Bethpage Black. It would be Charlie's first experience representing the United States, if he can maintain or improve his current position in the event. The American team for the Junior Ryder Cup will feature four other boys. One of them is already secured by Hamilton Coleman, who won the US Junior Amateur. Charlie Woods hits a tee shot on the fourth hole during the first round of the U.S. Junior Amateur at Brook Hollow Golf Club on July 21, 2025 in Dallas, players will be selected from the team's internal rankings, currently led by Miles Russell, while the sixth player will be selected by the captain. The team will also feature six girls who will qualify and/or be selected following exactly the same criteria as the boys. This way, Charlie could guarantee his presence on the team this Friday at Purdue University's Ackerman-Allen Course. However, if he doesn't finish in the top two at the Junior PGA Championship, he still has options, although they certainly look less tempting. Depending on his result in this event and also on the performance of his rivals, Charlie could reach second place in the team's internal rankings and earn his spot this way. He could also impress captain Suzy Whaley enough to decide to select him as her free pick. The Junior PGA Championship is the last event before the team membership is unveiled. The 12 members will be named next Tuesday, August 5. 🚨🐯👀 #UPDATE — Charlie Woods birdies the 18th to shoot -5, 66 in the 3rd round of the Jr. PGA Championship. He currently sits T2 (7 back) and will have a legitimate opportunity to compete for a spot on the Jr. Ryder Cup team. Top 2 finishers qualify. — NUCLR GOLF (@NUCLRGOLF) August 1, 2025 There's no doubt that Charlie has proven in recent days that he can play at the highest level. During the third round, he carded nine birdies and four bogeys for a 66, which brought his 36th-hole score to 12-under. "My round was pretty up and down and it gave me a heart attack out there," Woods told the Journal & Courier. "But nine birdies is pretty good. A couple of three-putts, I made a few mistakes today but overall, pretty solid round. Pretty good position going into tomorrow." Charlie is tied for second with Pennson Badgett. They are both seven strokes behind leader Lunden Esterline, who also posted a third-round 66 and has a more than comfortable cushion for the final round. On the girls' side, superstar Asterisk Talley now leads alone after a third-round 69. Talley holds a two-stroke lead over Zoe Cusack, who was co-leading the day before.
