6.0-magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia's Bengkulu, damages buildings
JAKARTA: A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's western Bengkulu province on Friday (May 23) morning, injuring several people and damaging some houses but without triggering large waves.
"The shakes of the quake were felt strongly by the residents in Bengkulu City," Reza Afriyanto, secretary of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency of Bengkulu province, told Xinhua.
About 33 houses and one building were damaged in Bengkulu City, the provincial capital, and several people were injured.
However, no casualties have been reported in Bengkulu province so far, local media reported.
The country's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency had initially reported the magnitude as 6.3 before revising it downward.
The tremors occurred at 2.52am Jakarta time Friday, with the epicentre located 47km southwest of Bengkulu City, at a depth of 84km below the seabed.
No tsunami warning was issued, as the tremors were not expected to generate giant waves.

Forest fire in NW Türkiye prompts evacuation of 5 villages
ISTANBUL, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A forest fire that erupted Saturday at around 4:30 p.m. local time (1330 GMT) in Türkiye's northwestern province of Canakkale has forced the evacuation of five villages, authorities said. Canakkale Governor Omer Toraman said on social media platform X that 11 planes and 10 helicopters, along with ground crews, have been deployed to battle the blaze. The villages were evacuated as a precaution, as the fire spread rapidly due to strong winds, Toraman said. According to weather reports, winds in the region are blowing at around 50 km per hour. Meanwhile, Turkish Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said on X that efforts are continuing "with full force and without interruption" to bring the blaze under control as soon as possible. SYDNEY, Aug 16 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale hit near the east coast of Australia at 9.49 am local time on Saturday (2349 GMT Friday), said Geoscience Australia, reported Xinhua. The epicentre, with a depth of 10.0 kilometres, was about 80 km west of Noosa and 250 km north of Brisbane in the Australian state of Queensland. People have reported feeling tremors as far as Rockhampton in north Queensland and as far as Glen Innes in north New South Wales.
