Comedian, Ricky Gervais, has been awarded a coveted Hollywood Walk of Fame Award in Los Angeles, but risked getting cancelled when he made a speech accepting the honour
Ricky Gervais risked getting cancelled on Friday when he accepted a prestigious Hollywood Walk of Fame award. The outspoken comedian, 63, was bestowed the honour for his services to the entertainment world and posed proudly for snaps with his very own star on Hollywood Boulevard at the iconic landmark in Los Angeles.
Dressed casually, sporting a black T-shirt, jeans, trainers and sunglasses, The Office star admitted he was "surprised" to be part of the Walk of Fame, which boasts a number of huge A-listers from the past and present. However, risking the honour with a follow-up statement, Ricky made a joke about being grateful to join some of the legends memorialised on the boulevard as he referenced Michael Jackson, Bill Cosby and Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle — all of whom have faced accusations of sexual assault.
"Thank you so much for this honour. It's a genuine thrill to be part of such an exclusive club," Ricky said, reports Variety. He continued: "And just looking around earlier at all the other stars, absolute icons, you know? Michael Jackson, Bill Cosby, Fatty Arbuckle."
All three men went to trial for their alleged crimes, but only The Cosby Show star, Cosby, was convicted for sexual assault – but later had the conviction overturned – while Jackson was acquitted over molestation allegations and Arbuckle was acquitted of rape and manslaughter.
Ricky, who left the Golden Globes audience skewered in 2020 when he made 'woke' jokes about Jeffrey Epstein, Harvey Weinstein and Prince Andrew, began his speech, saying: "Wow, this is a huge surprise. I never thought I'd win this today."
Unfolding a piece of paper, he went on: "I haven't even prepared a speech or anything. I should firstly apologize for how I'm dressed. This isn't me trying to be cool or disrespectful to the establishment. This is me not having a suit that fits anymore."
He later joked about how his job is to be "not very good at taking things too seriously" and delivered his controversial comments about the company he was keeping on the Walk of Fame despite saying he was "going to try and be serious".
Ricky is no stranger to a raised eyebrow with his speeches and left the Golden Globes audience in 2020 open-mouthed with his controversial delivery.
Hosting the ceremony for the fifth time, the comedian went off on an eight-minute monologue criticising various aspects of Hollywood, bringing in issues of racism, the Epstein scandal and finishing the speech with a jab at every 'woke' celebrity that tries to lecture the world as they're receiving the awards.
Ricky was slammed by many celebrities the morning after the awards, with several accusing the After Life star of being 'cruel' and 'unkind' as he poked fun at the toast of Tinseltown.
However, responding to criticism on Twitter, now X, the comic said: "Thank you for all your amazing comments about my Golden Globes monologue. Best reaction ever, that means a lot to me.
"I had a blast but thank f*** it's over so I can get back to my real job of editing #AfterLife2 and touring #SuperNature. Makes jokes not war."

The moment sparked a plethora of reactions on social media as many dubbed it bizarre and uncomfortable that Arnold commented about seeing his son in the buff. Despite Arnold ruffling some feathers, others praised them for 'interviewing each other and talking about weenies.' In order to accept his part in the series, which was filmed in Thailand over a period of seven months, Patrick pushed back his own wedding to fiancée Abby Champion. After informing his bride-to-be about having to delay their walk down the aisle, Patrick gushed on The Drew Barrymore Show that Champion was very supportive. 'She was so happy,' he said. Arnold Schwarzenegger has dropped a huge bombshell about his stint in the Terminator, confessing that he didn't like his most famous catchphrase. The 77-year-old starred as the creepy cyborg assassin in the hit 1984 flick, helmed by James Cameron, and later reprised his role in a string of the sequels. The character is most known for threatening, 'I'll be back', which was voted among the best movie quotes in history by the American Film Institute (AFI). However, sitting down with son Patrick Schwarzenegger to reflect on their separate screen careers, he admitted that he tried to rewrite it before the director shut him down. In a new Variety interview, he told the White Lotus star: 'The old directors were fanatics about 'Study your dialogue and hit the mark.' 'Jim Cameron is like that. I would say, 'I don't like the line 'I'll be back.'' He says, 'What do you mean you don't like the line?' I said, 'It's just weird for a German to say, 'I'll be back.' Blake Lively makes unexpected move and drops major claims against Justin Baldoni
Blake Lively has withdrawn two of the claims that she made about It Ends With Us director, Justin Baldoni. Lively and Baldoni have been embroiled in a bitter feud since It Ends With Us, a book based on the Colleen Hoover book of the same name, was released in August 2024. In December, following months of speculation, Lively launched legal proceedings against the director with claims stemming from the production of the film. In the legal complaint, she made various allegations, but is now attempting to drop the claims of intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent infliction of emotional distress. The move comes after Baldoni's legal team attempted to gain access to Lively's medical records, reported Variety. The outlet claimed that Baldoni's lawyers are attempting to get the actor to sign a release to her therapy notes and other information relevant to her claim that she suffered 'severe emotional distress and pain, humiliation, embarrassment, belittlement, frustration and mental anguish.' Judge Lewis Liman wrote this morning that Baldoni's motion to compel Lively to release the notes was denied 'because of 'based on the Plaintiff's representation that the relevant claims will be withdrawn.' Variety reported the judge commented: 'The parties shall stipulate to whether the dismissal is with or without prejudice, or Lively shall renew her request by formal motion. For avoidance of doubt, if the claims are not dismissed, the Court will preclude Lively from offering any evidence of emotional distress.' This means that Lively's legal team can no longer present evidence of her alleged emotional distress claims. The filing added that Lively is 'only willing to withdraw her claims without prejudice,' and 'refused the Wayfarer Parties' reasonable request that the withdrawal of such claims be with prejudice' Lively's lawyers, Esra Hudson and Mike Gottlieb, told Variety that Baldoni's filing was 'a press stunt'. They added: 'The Baldoni-Wayfarer strategy of filing retaliatory claims has exposed them to expansive new damages claims under California law, rendering certain of Ms Lively's original claims no longer necessary. 'Ms Lively continues to allege emotional distress, as part of numerous other claims in her lawsuit, such as sexual harassment and retaliation, and massive additional compensatory damages on all of her claims.' Baldoni's team counter-sued Lively's team for civil extortion, defamation and invasion of privacy in January. More Trending As the pair's legal teams continue to exchange barbs, the most recent update in the legal battle was in May, as pop star Taylor Swift was pulled into the dispute. Baldoni's lawyer (Bryan Freedman) alleged in a letter that Lively's lawyer threatened to leak private messages between the actress and Taylor if the singer did not release a statement supporting her. This letter was later struck from the docket. It was also alleged that Swift encouraged Baldoni to accept script rewrites by Lively.
