'Mesmerising masterpiece' film that fans love now free to stream for free
Lord of the Rings enthusiasts are being encouraged to watch "one of the best fantasy films ever made", now available for free streaming online.
Pan's Labyrinth transports viewers back to 1944, where a young girl is sent to live with her "ruthless stepfather". Desperate to escape her grim reality, she finds herself drawn into a fantastical parallel world that brings its own terrors.
After encountering a fairy who leads her to an ancient Faun, the girl learns she is a princess and her real father is a king. However, she must demonstrate her worth through several challenging tasks - and fans can now tune in on BBC.
The film, presented in Spanish with English subtitles, has been hailed as a must-see for Lord of the Rings devotees. It is now available for streaming on BBC iPlayer for free from today (July 26).
A BBC synopsis states: "Franco's Spain, 1944. Bookish young Ofelia, stuck in her sadistic new stepfather's army outpost, where her ailing mother is to give birth, gets drawn to a fantastical alternate world – one just as disturbing and violent as the reality around her.", reports the Manchester Evening News.
The film, which debuted in 2006, was so well-received it was eventually adapted into a book. With an impressive rating of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, the reviews continue to flood in.
One viewer commented: "A classic, master class film making and storytelling. Up there with The Lord of The Rings as one of the best fantasy movies ever made."
Another said: "Beautiful film that should have won more Oscars!". A third added: "A child's dreamworld and the horror of the civil war collide and entangle in an adult fantasy . A mesmerizing masterpiece."

He criticised the showrunners for failing to "investigate my disability" or safeguard him from what he now perceives as a "protect me from what I now realise was a dangerous environment". In a chat with The Sun, he admitted: "I know I struggle to read people. I know people find me weird. Autism is a disability, a registered disability." He further attributed the claim that he "never wears pants" to his autism, explaining: "It's not sexualised. It's hypersensitivity - that happens with autism." However, Janet Street Porter, 78, took issue with Gregg's defence during her appearance on Times Radio. She drew parallels between the MasterChef probe and an investigation into allegations made against Russell Brand. Earlier this year, the BBC issued an apology after examining eight complaints about the former 6 Music presenter. Of these complaints, two were lodged during his tenure at the corporation. Former Celebrity MasterChef winner Janet has spoken out, saying: "Back then anybody working class, first of all you were regarded as a bit thick. He has no justification, his justification for everything has been disastrous, absolutely disastrous." She continued to draw parallels with another celebrity, stating: "He's exactly like Russell Brand, he's in his own world and they just do not see it. They do not see it. There's plenty of people like that." The BBC parted ways with both Gregg and his ex-colleague John Torode following an inquiry into their behaviour on MasterChef. Speaking in the immediate aftermath of his "sacking", John said: "Although I haven't heard from anyone at the BBC or Banijay - I am seeing and reading that I've been 'sacked' from MasterChef and I repeat that I have no recollection of what I'm accused of. He expressed disappointment over how the situation was handled, adding: "The enquiry could not even state the date or year of when I am meant to have said something wrong. I'd hoped that I'd have some say in my exit from a show I've worked on since its relaunch in 2005, but events in last few days seem to have prevented that." Despite the controversy surrounding Gregg, the BBC has announced that the new series of MasterChef will still be broadcast next month. A BBC spokesperson stated: "After careful consideration and consultation with the contestants, we have decided to broadcast the amateur series of MasterChef on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 6 August. MasterChef is an amazing competition which is life-changing for the amateur chefs taking part. The focus of it has always been their skill and their journey." The broadcaster acknowledged the complexity of the decision, saying: "This has not been an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone will agree with it. In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters. We have been very clear on the standards of behaviour that we expect of those who work at the BBC or on shows made for the BBC." The spokesperson continued: "However, we believe that broadcasting this series is the right thing to do for these cooks who have given so much to the process. We want them to be properly recognised and give the audience the choice to watch the series." The corporation has yet to make any announcement regarding the Christmas or celebrity versions of the programme.

Strictly Come Dancing contestant 'confirmed' as fans spot huge reality star at rehearsals
Eagle-eyed Strictly Come Dancing stars have reportedly spotted a huge star arriving at the BBC Elstree studios for rehearsals The Strictly Come Dancing professionals were all smiles as they rocked up for the first day of rehearsals for the new series on Monday. Ahead of its launch in September, a whole host of familiar faces were papped on Monday morning as they made their way into the rehearsal studio and they were joined by two new recruits. However, it wasn't just the professional dancers that caught fans eyes as one huge reality TV star was reportedly seen arriving at the studio in BBC's Elstree base. According to onlookers, none other than former Love Island star Dani Dyer was spotted arriving at the studios. Naturally, this has sent Strictly fans into overdrive as they believe that mum-of-three Dani, 28, would be the perfect contestant for the long-running BBC dance competition. Sharing a post to Reddit, one user wrote: "My daughter's a receptionist at Elstree and was super excited that she saw Dani Dyer at the studio yesterday. Something to do with Strictly??" Someone else replied: "She is rumoured actually! I guess she will be on it, she'll be good." And another Reddit user echoed: "I've heard her name floating around so that would be brill news." Last month, Dani's name was thrown into the hat as rumours began to circulate about who the stars would be this year. A source told The Sun at the time: "Bosses are thrilled she's agreed to take part and are ironing out her fee. "She's bubbly, down-to-earth and straight-talking and producers reckon she'll make an ideal contestant - not to mention the bonus of having Jarrod and dad Danny in the audience supporting her." It comes after all of the professional dancers, old and new, were seen arriving at the very first day of rehearsals for the long-awaited 2025 series. First to be seen arriving, was much-loved star, Amy Dowden, who is back in business after being forced to leave the show early last year while recovering from a foot injury. The Welsh wonder, who also underwent chemotherapy and a mastectomy in May 2023 following her breast cancer diagnosis, looked delighted to be back with her pals as she smiled for photographers, clutching a coffee and a Holland and Barret bag. Also flashing a smile a mile wide was last year's champion, Dianne Buswell. The Aussie, who lifted the Glitterball trophy with Chris McCausland, arrived at the dance studio sporting a tan waistcoat and matching boots with cut-off denim shorts alongside fellow pro, Kai Widdrington, who flashed the peace sign. Next to arrive was South African star, Johannes Radebe, who cut a striking figure, sporting a Protect The Dolls a paisley neckerchief and suede ankle boots. He was followed by Spanish champion, Gorka Marquez and Ukranian dancer, Nadiya Bychkova, who looked gorgeous in an all-cream ensemble with a Union Jack bag. Nadiya recently admitted that she and pro, Kai, no longer speak to one another after they briefly dated, so hopefully things will go smoothly in training today. Also seen at the studio were Vito Coppola, Lauren Oakley, Karen Hauer and Michelle Tsiakkas. They were joined by Jowita Przystal and Janette Manrara's husband, Aljaz Skorjanec. And finally, making their debut in the Strictly gang were new recruits, Alexis Warr and Julian Caillon. Alexis, hailing from the US, triumphed in So You Think You Can Dance in 2022, earning the title of America's Favourite Dancer and becoming the first female Ballroom and Latin dancer to win the accolade. Meanwhile, Julian, originally from Australia, started dancing at the tender age of 10, focusing on Ballroom and Latin American styles, and has proudly represented Australia in international competitions. The Mirror has contacted Dani Dyer's representatives and a Strictly Come Dancing spokesperson for comment on this story.

It comes as The Sun has 'confirmed' the celebrity contestants set to take part in a number of physical challenges. 'With this brand-new series and another celebrity special confirmed, there will be even more epic battles, more high-octane action and of course even more foam fingers than ever before for everyone to look forward to.'
