Cristiano Ronaldo in Hong Kong: the making of an icon, and what drives him

The excitement generated by Cristiano Ronaldo's presence in Hong Kong this week can be attributed not only to his fame but to how long fans have waited to see him play in the city.

Their first opportunity to do so may also be the last, with Ronaldo now 40 years old – even if he has shown little desire to slow down since his arrival at Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr two years ago.
His time in Riyadh has followed a familiar pattern of goals and yet more goals, a theme through his rise to fame at Manchester United, a decade of dominance at Real Madrid, a less well regarded spell in Italy with Juventus and a doomed return to United.
His acquisition as the kingpin in Saudi Arabia's sporting outreach, when he joined Al-Nassr in 2023 in a deal that reportedly paid him north of £175 million (US$237m) per year, is described now by the club's CEO Jose Semedo as a 'game-changer for Saudi football'.

Fans revere him for his dedication, athleticism, longevity and startling self-belief. And there are plenty of fans: he has the most Instagram followers in the world, with about 662 million.

Al-Nassr advance to Saudi Super Cup final

Al-Nassr advance to Saudi Super Cup final Al-Nassr are heading into the final on August 23 at Hong Kong Stadium. Photo: Reuters In a nerve-shredding clash under the Hong Kong Stadium lights, Al-Nassr fought hard to secure a 2-1 victory over Al-Ittihad, booking their place in the Saudi Super Cup final in dramatic fashion. From the first whistle, Cristiano Ronaldo's yellow and blue team looked determined to dictate the tempo. Their early pressure paid dividends, and they broke the deadlock with a moment of sheer quality from Sadio Mané. Found in space inside the box, the Senegalese star unleashed a volley that, despite a touch from the Ittihad goalkeeper, possessed too much power, rippling the net to send the Al-Nassr faithful into raptures. However, the momentum shifted before the break. Al-Ittihad found their way back into the tie with a slick equaliser. Steven Bergwijn, arriving at pace on the left flank, met a cross with a perfectly timed sliding effort that flew into the back of the net, ensuring the sides went into half-time locked at 1-1. The match turned on its head moments into the second half when Mané was shown a straight red card for a foul on Ittihad keeper Al Shanqiti, forcing Al-Nassr to play the entire remainder of the match with just ten men. A lightning counter-attack was finished with precision by João Félix, sending the team into the final. The journey in Hong Kong continues on Wednesday when Al-Qadsiah and Al-Ahli clash at the Hong Kong Stadium for the right to face Al-Nassr in the Saudi Super Cup final on August 23.

Saudi Super Cup: Cristiano Ronaldo creates winner as Al-Nassr beat Al-Ittihad in semi-final

Cristiano Ronaldo extended his Hong Kong adventure on Tuesday, creating the winning goal for 10-man Al-Nassr to beat Al-Ittihad 2-1 on a night of high drama at Hong Kong Stadium. With the teams level, and Al-Nassr reduced by the 25th-minute dismissal of Sadio Mane, Ronaldo galloped onto a forward ball from Nawaf Boushal in the 61st minute, before he unselfishly presented Joao Felix with the easiest of debut goals. When an original decision to disallow the strike for offside against Ronaldo was overturned, he celebrated wildly. Al-Nassr will meet the winners of Wednesday's second Saudi Super Cup semi-final between Al-Ahli and Al-Qadsiah in Saturday's final. Ronaldo and his allies appeared set for a straightforward night when Mane squeezed an attempt beyond the weak defences of goalkeeper Hamed Al-Shanqiti after 10 minutes. Al-Ittihad never looked like exploiting their numerical advantage, however, with Al-Nassr the faster, hungrier and more aggressive team.
