June-July School holidays in SA [video]
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed that the final day of the second term – which signals the start of the June-July school holidays – will be Friday, 27 June.
Pupils will return to their desks on Tuesday, 22 July for Term 3. That means a June-July holiday period of 24 days in total, comprising three full weeks plus one extra day – and weekends.
The 2025 school year is divided into four terms: Term 1: 15 January to 28 March, Term 2: 8 April to 27 June, Term 3: 22 July to 3 October and Term 4: 13 October to 10 December.

Prior to 2024, there was a difference in the term dates for inland and coastal schools. In 2024 that changed to a calendar that was identical for all provinces. This remains the case in 2025.
The 2025 academic year will consist of 200 school days. Terms 1 and 2 will have 52 days, Term 3 will be the longest at 53 days, while Term 4 will be the shortest with just 43 days

Lions club cleans up
Shelly Beach Lions Club filled five bags of rubbish in half-an-hour in Margate Ext 3. Samantha Bentley of the Lions thanked the club members for the great trash pick up on World Environment Day (June 5). Home sweet home for Domino babies
THE six little ones and their dedicated crisis mom and carers at The Domino Foundation's Babies' Home have been given a new temporary address pending a makeover to the roof. The plea for temporary shelter was sent out via social media and community titles a few weeks ago. It was heard and a generous benefactor offered his property of three bedrooms and two bathrooms to the Babies' Home programme as a gift to the children and organisation. 'We were prepared for what was going to be a major upheaval, but, when we discovered that we would only have to move down the road, we all heaved a collective sigh of relief. Now, our volunteers, friends and donors will still find us easily, and the two children who go to pre-school can be got there with no extra effort,' said house mother, Precious Thabethe. Waste collection in Cape Town to run as usual on Youth Day
Waste collection services will operate as usual on Monday, 16 June, Youth Day, according to the city. However, residents have been urged to expect possible changes in collection times due to operational factors, including reduced holiday traffic. The city recommends that all households place their bins outside by 6:30 to avoid missing early pickups. 'Residents should, however, be aware of the possibility of earlier collection or delays, as operational factors such as reduced holiday traffic could affect collection times,' the city noted. The city has cautioned that while services are planned to run on schedule, unexpected delays can occur. In such cases, residents are asked to leave their bins out daily until collected. 'If delays do occur, residents should please take their bins out each day until it has been emptied,' the statement advised. The city also encouraged recycling and composting as practical solutions to manage waste volumes in the event of delayed collection. 'Recycling and composting can help save space in the bin,' they said. Drop-Off Sites Remain Open for Convenience For those who prefer or need to dispose of refuse themselves, all City drop-off sites will remain operational during Youth Day and run on public holiday hours. A full list of drop-off facilities and their times is available online. By keeping services running on public holidays and maintaining open access to drop-off facilities, the city aims to ensure uninterrupted waste management while encouraging residents to manage their household waste actively.
