NFLX, MMM, AXP: U.S. Indices Turn Red as Trump Pushes 15% Tariff on European Imports

The leading U.S. indices have turned negative at midday on July 18 on reports that U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing for a blanket 15% tariff on imports from the European Union (EU).

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 256 points, or 0.58%, while the benchmark S&P 500 index lost 0.17% after hitting a record high earlier in the trading session, and the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite lost about 0.10%.
Stocks have turned red as Trump demands a minimum tariff of 15%, and perhaps as high as 20%, in any trade deal with Europe. The EU is racing to reach a trade deal with the U.S. ahead of Trump's self-imposed Aug. 1 deadline, when the president has vowed to begin implementing 30% tariffs on the European trading and currency bloc.
Tariffs Over Earnings
New tariff concerns appear to have taken precedence for investors over bullish economic data and strong corporate earnings. Data released on July 18 found that consumer sentiment in America is steadily improving. This report comes a day after the latest retail sales data showed stronger-than-expected spending on the part of consumers.
At the same time, second-quarter financial results continue to impress, with major companies such as Netflix (NFLX), 3M (MMM), and American Express (AXP) topping Wall Street forecasts. Unfortunately, news of the potential tariffs on the European Union is overshadowing the positive news.
Is the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust a Buy?

Kyiv observes day of mourning after massive Russian strikes, Trump slams ‘disgusting' attack

Ukraine on Friday observed a day of mourning following one of the deadliest Russian attacks on the capital Kyiv since the 2022 full-scale invasion. At least 26 people, including three children, were killed in Thursday's bombardment. US President Donald Trump, who gave Russia a "10 or 12" deadline this week to end the hostilities, said the attacks were 'disgusting'. The death toll from Thursday's Russian missile and drone strikes on Kyiv has risen to 26, including three children, Ukraine's interior ministry said. The toll previously stood at 16, including two children, but was revised Friday after 'rescuers retrieved 10 bodies from the rubble of the residential building in Sviatoshynsky district, including the body of a 2-year-old child', the ministry posted on Telegram. It also said 159 people were wounded in Thursday's strikes, including 16 children. One person was also killed in a Russian attack early Friday on Zaporizhzhia, in southeast Ukraine, the region's military administration said on Telegram. Kyiv was observing a day of mourning after Thursday's bombardment, among the deadliest the capital has seen since Russia launched its large-scale offensive in February 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged his allies on Thursday to bring about 'regime change' in Russia, hours after the attack. US President Donald Trump on Thursday blasted Russia's actions in Ukraine, suggesting that new sanctions against Moscow were coming. 'Russia—I think it's disgusting what they're doing. I think it's disgusting,' Trump told journalists. On Monday, the US leader issued a '10 or 12' day ultimatum for Moscow to halt its invasion, now in its fourth year, or face sanctions. Switzerland is assessing higher US tariff, pushing for 'negotiated solution'

BERLIN/GENEVA (Reuters) -Switzerland's government said on Friday it was assessing the situation after the White House announced a higher 39% tariff on Swiss imports to the United States in an escalating trade war between the two countries. "Switzerland has been and continues to be in contact with the responsible authorities in the U.S.," the Federal Council said in a post on X, adding that it "continues to strive for a negotiated solution". The government said it would analyse the new situation and decide how to proceed. Switzerland, which described the original 31% tariff as "incomprehensible", had been working to reduce the levy on shipments to the United States, its biggest export market. Swiss business leaders and officials have underlined how much Switzerland spends in the United States: the European country is the 7th largest investor in the United States. Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche has said it will invest $50 billion in the United States while rival Novartis has committed $23 billion, while other Swiss companies including chocolate maker Barry Callebaut and engineering group ABB have also announced investments. Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter and Economy Minister Guy Parmelin have visited Washington for talks to press Switzerland's case. Swiss officials drafted a preliminary framework for a deal at a technical level with U.S. officials in early July. Since then, they have been waiting for a sign-off from U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a person familiar with the matter. Switzerland sent about 65 billion Swiss francs ($80 billion) of goods to the United States in 2024, or about one sixth of its total exports of 394 billion francs. Total trade with the U.S. was 91.9 billion francs, or about 12.7% of all imports and exports, Swiss government data show. Switzerland's trade surplus with the United States last year was almost 38.7 billion francs. ($1 = 0.8134 Swiss francs) (Writing by Rachel More.
