ESPN's SP+ ranks Michigan football No. 10 for 2025, eyes Big Ten title run
The operative word here is 'most.'
ESPN's resident advanced analytics guru Bill Connelly isn't among those looking down his nose at the Wolverines. Of course, Connelly is the one who puts together SP+ as well as the returning production rankings. He's done more to analyze the field than simply going off name recognition or projecting off of the previous year's results.
As far as the maize and blue are concerned, Connelly does have Michigan as the fourth-best team in the Big Ten -- but he also has the Wolverines as the 10th-best team in the country.
Via his Big Ten preview on ESPN, he has Michigan as one of the conference championship contenders:
2025 projection: 10th in SP+, 9.8 average wins (7.2 in the Big Ten)
If you can beat Ohio State and Alabama without a quarterback, just think of what you can do with one, right (...)
The No. 10 ranking in SP+ is certainly aggressive. It will require massive offensive improvement. But with a schedule featuring only two opponents projected better than 30th (Oklahoma at the start, Ohio State at the end), the Wolverines won't need a top-10 team to win a lot of games.
One of the things he mentions is that Michigan will face some tough competition early on, with road trips to Oklahoma, Nebraska, and USC. He does have the Sooners at No. 16 in his rankings, so the only school that is ranked ahead of the Wolverines on the schedule is Ohio State.
So, with that in mind, should Michigan football return to form, where the Wolverines beat the teams they're supposed to, that -- in theory -- would vault the maize and blue to 11-0 going into The Game. However, there's a reason why games aren't played on paper. And if Connelly is right (and we tend to agree), that if there's just a modicum of offensive improvement, then yes, Michigan could be relatively formidable in 2025.

Great young talent on the team, a World Series champion manager, and one of, if not, the best pitchers in the game today in Tarik Skubal. But his defensive ability is average at best, and with other infielders like Kevin McGonigle, Hao-Yu Lee and Jace Jung in the system, Anderson seems expendable to the Tigers. He could simultaneously be attractive to other teams in a high-priced market," Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic said. With the starting middle infield consisting of players like Gleyber Torres and Javier Baez, two All-Star Game starters from this year, perhaps Detroit can afford to ship off a prime prospect in order to get a slightly shinier diamond in the process as they look to make their way back to the World Series for the first time since 2012.

ESPN names Ohio State as a college basketball team that could 'make a jump' this season
We are all getting ready for the start of the college football season now just a little over a month away, but the college basketball season won't be too far behind. In fact, we're now within 100 days of the Ohio State basketball season, and ESPN took a big look at previewing hoops for 2025-2026 by looking at many different angles and storylines. One of the things Myron Metcalf and Jeff Borzello touched on was ten teams that "could make a jump" this coming season. And, if you are an Ohio State fan, then you have to like what the ESPN duo things of the Buckeyes this season because they were named as one of those ten teams. OSU was able to retain some key pieces of its core group, but outside of that, there's been a major overhaul of the guys suiting up in the scarlet and gray this season. The mix of old and new will have to come together for the Buckeyes to get back to the NCAA Tournament, but there's good reason to believe that it could happen. Here's what Borzello says about Ohio State this winter: "The Buckeyes showed flashes of their potential last season but couldn't quite string together a consistent run of form. With a terrific trio back in Bruce Thornton, Devin Royal and John Mobley Jr. -- plus the additions of Christoph Tilly and Brandon Noel up front -- Jake Diebler's team should find itself in the NCAA tournament." It sure seems like Ohio State hasn't had a shortage of talent over the last few years, but getting the team to come together and play as a team has been an issue that seems to be a problem in today's day and age of the transfer portal and name, image and likeness. Here's to hoping ESPN is right and that the Buckeyes make it back to meaningful games late and on into the postseason this basketball season.
