Kamikaze football survives in the heat of Athens... but Martin's men can't keep giving away so many chances

Daily Mail30-07-2025
Well, if nothing else, Rangers are certainly an entertaining watch under Russell Martin. Terrifying, yes. But entertaining.
Robust defensive resolve — the kind which has underpinned so much of the club's success on the continent in recent years — has been chucked aside within weeks in favour of kamikaze football.
But, for the second time in eight days, Martin's side were ultimately rewarded for all that risk.
Just like he did at Ibrox, Djeidi Gassama once again came off the bench to make the difference.
The scoreline could — and should — have been very different by the time the former Sheffield Wednesday wide man entered the fray.
Until then, it was a carbon copy of last week's meeting. Rangers messing about with the ball at the back. Panathinaikos messing up every opportunity which came their way.
James Tavernier, Nasser Djiga and Max Aarons all took turns at putting it on a plate. All, somehow, got away with it.
Martin's stamp on the side is clear for all to see. Well, at least those who could bare to look. But good grief, some of these players are a million miles away from being able to implement this new style.
Motherwell will fancy their chances at Fir Park on Saturday. They surely won't be as profligate as the Greeks were here.
Even when they did take the lead through Filip Duricic, the finish was dreadful, albeit enough to beat a slightly bamboozled and hopelessly exposed Jack Butland.
It wasn't much better at the other end. Danilo had a pop 25 seconds in, but that was pretty much his lot for the night. For all his work off the ball, the Brazilian saw little of it.
Last week's hero Findlay Curtis barely got a sniff either. It was no surprise to see him hooked for Gassama shortly before the hour. The 21-year-old's introduction proved to be the spark his side needed.
Credit where it's due to his colleagues as well. The overall display from back to front in the last third of the game was much improved as they demonstrated the composure and authority to see out the tie in relative comfort.
Job done.

Liverpool ramp up replacement striker search after agreeing Darwin Nunez fee

Liverpool have agreed a deal to sell Darwin Nunez to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal for an initial £46.2m. The striker, who wanted to leave to go to Saudi Arabia in January, is set to end his three-season spell at Anfield, while Liverpool could now enter the market for another centre-forward. They have had a £110m bid for Alexander Isak swiftly rejected by Newcastle and have indicated they will not raise their offer but are looking for a player they deem of sufficient quality to start, who is available and at what they regard as a fair price. They have already signed one striker this summer, in Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for £69m, and if they cannot add another, are aware that players such as Florian Wirtz, Rio Ngumoha, Curtis Jones and Jeremie Frimpong can all play in the front three if required. Before Al Hilal made an offer that could rise to £56.6m, including add-ons, Nunez also attracted interest from AC Milan but there were doubts if the Serie A side could meet Liverpool's asking price. Napoli had bid for Nunez earlier in the summer, but without coming close to a sum Liverpool would accept and when they wanted to defer the first payment until 2026, before instead signing attacker Lorenzo Lucca. Nunez joined Liverpool for £64m in 2022, with add-ons taking the potential fee to a club record of £85m. He scored 15 goals in his first season in England and 18 in the second but got just seven in 47 appearances in all competitions last year as Arne Slot preferred to use either the late Diogo Jota or Luis Diaz as his centre-forward. Liverpool rejected Nunez's request to leave in mid-season, wanting to keep him to help their successful bid to win a 20th league title. Should he go now leave, Liverpool will have brought in around £190m for players this summer, following Tyler Morton's move to Lyon for £15m.

Vladimir Weiss targets Celtic revenge mission as ex Rangers star defends dad over touchline meltdown

The veteran has come to his dad's defence after his meltdown on the touchline Former Rangers winger Vladimir Weiss is desperate to tee up a Celtic revenge mission by overturning Kairat Almaty's lead in the second leg. ‌ And the veteran has come to his dad's defence after his meltdown on the touchline during the 1-0 defeat in Kazakhstan. ‌ Slovan Bratislava boss Weiss Sr was sent off in their first leg defeat after a late penalty was awarded against his side. ‌ Despite playing the final 25 minutes with 10 men after Rahim Ibrahim was sent off, Slovan looked set to claim a valuable 0-0 draw in Kazakhstan until the last minute of the game, where Dastan Satpaev stepped up to bag the winner from 12 yards after Kairat were awarded a penalty kick. The veteran boss confronted the ref and the fourth official and stormed onto the pitch before being dragged away against the club he used to manage 10 years ago. His son played on loan for Rangers and helped them to a Scottish title in 2011 and is still going strong by captaining Slovan at the age of 35. And he's desperate to get another crack at playing Celtic in the Champions League playoff as he explained his dad's antics. He said: "He's a very emotional man and this match meant even more to him because he used to manage Kairat Almaty. Just as I would do anything for this team, so would he. ‌ "He regrets what happened now, but there's nothing he can do about it now. "Unfortunately, we will miss him in the home leg, but with the quality on our side and with our excellent fans, we will beat them at a sold-out stadium and win through to play against Celtic." Leanne Crichton aiming to deliver league title as Rangers head coach

New Rangers women's team head coach Leanne Crichton has set her sights on winning the SWPL title and making an impact in Europe. The former Scotland international has replaced Jo Potter in the dugout for the new season, which kicks off in ten days time. Rangers won both cup competitions last campaign, but fell just short in the league and eventually finished third behind Hibernian and Glasgow City despite taking it to the final day. Potter then departed for Crystal Palace and Rangers turned to Crichton to lead the side into the 2025/26 season, and she is determined to deliver success in the SWPL. She said: 'There was some contact between the club and myself a number of weeks back, obviously the approach was there and the conversations after that were really positive. 'To win, is the short-term plan, and ultimately for us, the long-term plan. The league title is the one thing that's been missing. 'It's a really successful team that I am taking over, in terms of four trophies from six, but the league title is the one trophy that every Rangers team wants to win. 'With that it would guarantee Champions League football, and for me that would be the ultimate aim to deliver the league title and then get a shot at Europe. 'That is what we will set out to do, I am very realistic regarding how competitive the league is, so the margins will be tight, but it will be up to us as a group to find that 1% extra that will make the difference.' Rangers gets their SWPL season under way with a trip to Montrose on Sunday, August 17.
