Historic south Essex landmark gets facelift thanks to passionate volunteers
WORK to upgrade a much-loved and historic Rayleigh landmark has been completed thanks to fresh funding and the efforts of passionate volunteers.
Rayleigh Mount, the site of a medieval motte and bailey castle close to Rayleigh Windmill, is owned by the National Trust and in recent months has seen extensive upgrades to improve accessibility for visitors.
On Saturday, stakeholders and funders will gather at the mount for a celebration of the community effort to rejuvenate the 11th century site.

'This celebration is not just about a site—it's about a shared commitment to heritage, sustainability, and community.
'Whether you contributed your time at a task day, shared your vision for the future, or simply supported from afar, this is your achievement too.'
Education - New displays provide historical information around the 11th century site (Image: Julie Gooding)Since February, residents have been gathering for volunteer task days at Rayleigh Mount, at which much of the now completed works were carried out.
The action has been made possible by a UK Shared Prosperity Fund grant from Rochford District Council.
'The recent funding has already made a visible impact at Rayleigh Mount,' said Mrs Gooding.
'Footpath accessibility has been significantly improved, with new handrails installed on the steps leading up to the castle site, making the site safer and more accessible to visitors who may have some access disabilities.

The castle at Rayleigh Mount is one of 48 mentioned in the Domesday Book, and the only one in Essex.
A spokesperson for the National Trust has described the project as 'an ambitious initiative focused on improving access, enhancing environmental sustainability, and fostering nature-based solutions within our local communities.'

Body found in search for girl missing in River Thames
Police searching for a missing girl in the River Thames have found a body. Emergency services responded on Friday to a report of two children, a boy and a girl, in difficulty in the water near the Royal Terrace Pier in Gravesend, Kent, having entered the river at nearby Royal Pier Road. A boy has since been rescued and is in a stable condition at a local hospital. Kent Police said the body was recovered at around 11.40am. The force said in a statement on Saturday afternoon its marine unit and the coastguard "continued the search of the water and river bank this morning. "At around 11.40am, a body was recovered from the river near Gravesend with the assistance of the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution). "Formal identification by the missing girl's next of kin has taken place." The death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage and a report will be prepared for the coroner, the force added. WhatsApp Issues Urgent iPhone Countdown: Chats Stop In 24 Hours On These Phones
WhatsApp is ending support for a series of Apple and Android devices, beginning on Sunday, June 1. It had been thought the change would come early in June, but the respite is over. Here's the list of iPhones affected and what it means. Apple iPhones with older software are about to lose access to WhatsApp. If you have an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, then first of all congratulations for holding out against the pressure to upgrade. But, secondly, commiserations, because your phone won't work with WhatsApp any more. That's because you need to have an iPhone that runs iOS 15.1 and later, and those phones can't handle software newer than iOS 14. If you want to continue to use WhatsApp, you'll need a newer iPhone (or iPad, now it's finally arrived on Apple's tablets). Android users are fine, providing your phone can run Android OS 5.0 and newer. The new software requirements have been announced by WhatsApp and the explanation is that 'Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates. Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp,' it says. To be fair to WhatsApp, support is only vanishing for iPhones that first went on sale more than 10 years ago, and which weren't sold by Apple for the last six years. And note the phrase 'Every year,' which tells us that if you have any iPhone newer than that, you're safe until next year at least. As noted by 9to5Mac, it had been reported that other iPhones would also be struck off, namely iPhone 16s, iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone SE 1st generation. However, this doesn't seem to be the case, providing, of course, you have updated the phone's software to later than iOS 15.1. This shouldn't be a problem as those phones are compatible with every version of iOS 15, including the recent iOS 15.8.1, a security update released a few weeks ago on March 31, 2025.

How a Noe Valley resident turned her neighbors into friends
After Laura Carlson's plans to buy a multi-family home with friends fell through, she decided, "We should make our neighbors into our friends." The big picture: Connecting with people on your block can feel radical when a majority of Americans don't know most of their neighbors. Zoom in: Carlson, who lives with her husband, toddler and cat, moved into a single-family home in Noe Valley last June. As self-described "burners" — fans of Burning Man — Carlson and her husband value community and the principle of "gifting without expectation." What she did: Organized a neighborhood social hour. She knocked on neighbors' doors and handed out flyers, which was "very time-consuming and draining," she says. The hard work paid off. At the first event, some people who lived in Noe Valley for 40 years finally met their neighbors, who were excited to plan future events. "For every bit of energy I've invested, I've received so much more from other people." Since that first gathering, the network has steadily grown. Less than a year later, neighbors now share lemons from their trees ("the classic San Francisco favor"), babysit, and chat in a WhatsApp group that's 70-people strong. "My personal favorite thing is that organizing social hours now takes me about five minutes," because the group votes on times through WhatsApp. Their last social hour was last Sunday. Here are a few things Carlson learned from her experience and a community-building group called the Neighborhood Accelerator Program: When you knock on doors, practice an opening line like "I'm your neighbor, I live right there," because that disarms someone who might think you're selling something. Try not to be discouraged if people don't open the door. Don't push the text group idea before people see the value in one. Asking, "Will you join this WhatsApp group full of strangers?" isn't as appealing as having a nice conversation with someone, and then asking, "Do you want to do this again?" A front yard or public park is ideal for your first event. Hers was on a hill.
